The reason to buy a mower and a trimmer together is not the box they come in. It is that the second tool on a platform you already own costs you a motor and a shaft instead of a motor, a shaft, a battery and a charger. Here is what that looks like on the three platforms our registry covers properly.

The short answer

Three pairings are supported by published specifications: EGO (LM2135SP mower, 420Wh, plus ST1521S trimmer with POWERLOAD), Ryobi 40V (RY40HPLM01B mower, 480Wh, plus RY402110 trimmer, 67 min claimed), and Greenworks 80V (LM2108S mower rated to half an acre, plus ST80L210 trimmer, 16 in swath). Pick the platform on the mower; the trimmer follows.

What the shared pack actually buys

A trimmer draws far less than a mower, so a mower-sized pack is an enormous trimmer battery. That asymmetry is the whole argument for staying on one platform.

The arithmetic — A mower pack, used on a trimmer
EGO mower pack: 56V x 7.5Ah = 420Wh
EGO ST1521S ships with 56V 2.5Ah = 140Wh
420 / 140 = 3x the energy
Published trimmer runtime on the 2.5Ah: up to 30 min
So the mower pack is roughly 90 minutes of trimming,
on a battery you already own.

The same shape holds on the other platforms: Ryobi's 40V 6.0Ah mower packs are 240Wh each against a trimmer that claims 67 minutes on one, and Greenworks' 80V 4.0Ah mower pack is 320Wh against a trimmer shipped with a 2.0Ah (160Wh). Buy the big pack once.

The three pairings, on published figures

Transcribed from the six manufacturer product pages cited in the sources below. Watt-hour comparisons are our arithmetic.

1. EGO 56V — the best trimmer of the three

The mower brings 420 watt-hours, a published 60 minutes, eight cut-height positions and the only published torque figure in the class. The trimmer brings POWERLOAD — automatic line winding — on a carbon fiber shaft with a lifetime shaft warranty.

POWERLOAD is the feature worth paying for in this pairing. Reloading line by hand is the single most disliked job in trimmer ownership, and EGO is the only maker here automating it.

The trimmer's included 2.5Ah pack is small at 140Wh, which is exactly why the pairing works: the mower's 7.5Ah pack triples it.

#ad Check the EGO Power+ 15" POWERLOAD Carbon Fiber ST1521S price on Amazonhow we're funded.

2. Ryobi 40V — the most packs and the widest platform

The mower ships with two 40V 6.0Ah packs (480Wh) and claims 80 minutes; the trimmer claims up to 67 minutes on a 6.0Ah and adjusts its swath from 15 to 17 inches, on a carbon fiber shaft at 8.8 lb bare.

Two packs with the mower is the practical advantage: one lives in the mower, the other runs the trimmer, and neither tool waits on a charger. Ryobi 40V is also the broadest platform in this registry — blowers, snow shovels, chainsaws and mini saws all share it.

Ryobi publishes no weight or cut-height range for the mower, which is the gap in an otherwise strong pairing.

#ad Check the Ryobi 40V HP Whisper 17" Carbon Fiber RY402110 price on Amazonhow we're funded.

3. Greenworks 80V — the widest trimmer swath

The mower is rated to half an acre with a 4-in-1 deck; the trimmer cuts a 16 inch swath at 6200 RPM on 0.080 in line, weighs 7.1 lb bare and claims 45 minutes with a 30 minute recharge.

A 16 inch swath is the widest of the three trimmers, which matters if you are edging a long boundary rather than tidying around a patio.

The mower's 320Wh is the smallest energy store in this comparison, and its 33 minute runtime claim is the shortest. On a half-acre lawn that is a second pack, not a preference.

How to buy a pairing without overpaying

  1. Choose on the mower. It is the tool with the acreage constraint; the trimmer will follow whatever platform you land on.
  2. Take the biggest pack with the mower kit, because that pack becomes the spare for everything else you buy later.
  3. Buy the trimmer bare if you can. The kit price is mostly battery and charger you already have — see bare tool vs kit.
  4. Check the charger, not just the pack. Charge rate varies more between brands than capacity does.

What we cannot tell you

We have not used these pairings. No manufacturer publishes a runtime for a mower pack fitted to a trimmer, so the 90 minute figure above is arithmetic on two published claims rather than a measurement. Ryobi publishes no mower weight or cut height; EGO publishes no mower weight. And none of the three publishes whether a mower-sized pack is heavy enough to unbalance a trimmer in use, which is a real consideration we cannot settle from spec sheets.

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
420Wh

56V x 7.5Ah = 420Wh, using EGO's advertised pack voltage.

What the numbers favor

  • 420Wh in the box -- the largest included pack of any flagship walk-behind on this page
  • Eight cut-height positions from 1 to 4 in, the widest published range here
  • Three interchangeable lower blades (mulching, high-lift bagging, extended runtime)
  • 5-year tool warranty, the longest published on this page

What they don't

  • EGO publishes torque (7.0 ft-lbs), not motor wattage, so it cannot be compared directly against Greenworks' 1500W figure
  • The 7.5Ah pack that earns the runtime claim is also the expensive one to replace
Skip this one if

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
140Wh

56V x 2.5Ah = 140Wh. 30 minutes of published runtime from 140Wh is about 4.7Wh per minute -- roughly a quarter of what a blower on turbo burns.

What the numbers favor

  • Lifetime warranty on the carbon fiber shaft, published
  • POWERLOAD winds the line for you -- the job everyone hates
  • 0.095 in line, the heavier of the two common home gauges
  • Split shaft, so it takes EGO's multi-head attachments

What they don't

  • Ships with the small 2.5Ah pack; 30 minutes is a modest published runtime
  • EGO does not publish a weight for this configuration

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
480Wh (2 x 240Wh)

40V x 6.0Ah = 240Wh per pack; the kit ships two, so 480Wh total -- but only 240Wh is available at any moment, because the mower draws one pack at a time.

What the numbers favor

  • 480Wh across two packs, the most total energy in any kit here
  • Two packs means you swap and keep mowing instead of waiting on a charger
  • Ryobi's 40V range is the broadest consumer battery line of the three platforms

What they don't

  • Only one 240Wh pack is live at a time -- the 480Wh is sequential, not simultaneous
  • Ryobi does not publish a cut-height range or weight on the product page, so both are unknown to us
Skip this one if

you own nothing on Ryobi yet and expect to buy heavy tools later. 40V is the lowest voltage of the three platforms, and the ceiling shows on chainsaws and riding gear.

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
240Wh

40V x 6.0Ah = 240Wh. 67 minutes from 240Wh is about 3.6Wh per minute -- the most efficient published figure of the three trimmers here.

What the numbers favor

  • 67 minutes published, more than double the EGO kit's 30
  • Swath adjusts 15-17 in, so tight borders and open verge get the same tool
  • Best published watt-hours per minute of the trimmers on this page
  • Whisper Series noise engineering, same line as the 57 dB blower

What they don't

  • 12.9 lb with the 6.0Ah pack fitted -- the heaviest trimmer here, and it is held at arm's length
  • Ryobi publishes no noise figure for this specific model
  • Bump feed, not an automatic reload head

80V x 4.0Ah = 320Wh, using Greenworks' advertised pack voltage.

What the numbers favor

  • 4-year battery warranty -- a year longer than EGO's 3-year, on the component that fails first
  • Publishes blade RPM, weight and acreage rating; the other two brands publish none of the three
  • 40-minute recharge on the included charger, the fastest published here
  • 4-in-1 deck adds turbo leaf pickup on top of mulch, bag and side discharge

What they don't

  • 320Wh included, the least of the three flagships -- and the 33-minute runtime claim reflects that
  • 75 lb is the only published weight here, and it is not light

  • 7.1 lb bare, the lightest published trimmer weight here
  • 30-minute recharge, the fastest on this page
  • 4-year battery warranty
  • Publishes motor RPM, which neither EGO nor Ryobi does for their trimmers

Common questions

What is the best mower and trimmer combo?
The pairing, not the bundle, is what matters. EGO's LM2135SP mower and ST1521S trimmer share 56V ARC Lithium packs; Ryobi's RY40HPLM01B and RY402110 share 40V; Greenworks' LM2108S and ST80L210 share 80V. Buy the mower first with the biggest pack, then the trimmer bare.
Is it cheaper to buy a mower and trimmer together?
Usually, because you pay for one set of batteries instead of two. The saving is in the pack and charger, not the tool -- which is why buying the second tool as a bare tool is the pattern to look for.
Can I use my mower battery in a trimmer?
Within one platform, yes. EGO 56V, Ryobi 40V and Greenworks 80V packs each run every tool in their own line. Across brands, no -- different voltages and different terminals.
Which battery platform is best for a mower and trimmer?
The one whose mower suits your lawn, because the mower is the tool with the real constraint. The trimmer will run on whatever the mower uses; no trimmer in our registry is so much better that it should pick the platform.
How many batteries do I need for a mower and trimmer?
One large pack for the mower and one small pack for the trimmer covers most suburban lawns, and the large one is the backup for both. Our how many batteries page runs the arithmetic.
