EGO 56V vs Greenworks 80V: higher voltage, smaller pack

Greenworks wins on voltage, warranty and published detail. EGO wins on the number that decides whether you finish the lawn.

Greenworks 80V is the better-documented platform and EGO 56V is the better- equipped one. If you buy either flagship exactly as it ships, EGO finishes more lawn per charge. If you add a second pack to the Greenworks, the comparison flips and Greenworks costs less to keep alive.

The 80V catch nobody explains

80V does not mean more runtime. Runtime comes from watt-hours — volts multiplied by amp-hours. Greenworks pairs its 80V with a 4.0Ah pack (320Wh) while EGO pairs 56V with a 7.5Ah pack (420Wh), so the lower-voltage mower ships 31% more energy and claims nearly double the runtime.
The arithmetic — Why the 80V mower runs for half as long
EGO: 56V x 7.5Ah = 420Wh -> 60 min claimed = 7.0Wh per minute
Greenworks: 80V x 4.0Ah = 320Wh -> 33 min claimed = 9.7Wh per minute

So there are two effects stacked on top of each other: the Greenworks starts with less energy and spends it faster. Neither is a defect — the same deck that eats watt-hours is the one that picks leaves up — but it is why a straight voltage comparison misleads. If runtime is your priority, budget for a larger Greenworks pack from day one. Greenworks sells the same mower with an 8.0Ah pack and claims 80 minutes for it, which is exactly the arithmetic above running in reverse.

Spec transparency is a real differentiator

Count the "not published" cells in the table. Greenworks has none. EGO has three, including the weight of a mower you have to push.

That is not a trivial observation. When a manufacturer publishes blade RPM, weight, recharge time and an acreage rating, it is committing to numbers you can hold it to. When it publishes a torque figure and a runtime claim and nothing else, you are being asked to trust the marketing. For a buyer trying to make this decision on paper — which is how almost everyone makes it — Greenworks is simply the easier brand to evaluate honestly.

Warranty: read the battery line, not the tool line

EGO publishes 5 years on the tool and 3 on the battery. Greenworks publishes 4 and 4. The headline favors EGO; the useful number favors Greenworks.

Motors in brushless outdoor tools very rarely fail inside a decade. Lithium packs degrade continuously from the day they are made, and that degradation is the thing that ends a cordless tool's useful life. An extra year of coverage on the component that actually wears out is worth more than an extra year on the component that generally does not. Recharge speed changes how you use the tool

Practical effect: with one Greenworks pack you can mow, wait 40 min, mow again

A 40-minute recharge is fast enough that a single pack plus a coffee break covers a half acre. That is a genuinely different ownership experience from waiting two hours, and it partly offsets the smaller pack. EGO does not publish a charge time for this kit, so we cannot run the same sum for it — which is the transparency point again, in practical form.

Tool range

EGO's 56V line is the broader of the two and reaches higher: the same packs run a 42-inch zero turn, which Greenworks 80V does not match in the consumer range. EGO also runs a multi-head system where one power head drives a trimmer, an edger and a pole saw.

Greenworks answers with strong individual tools — its 730 CFM axial blower publishes 5.5 lb bare, the best airflow-per-pound figure we found anywhere — and with a 4-year warranty across the line. But be careful with the brand name: Greenworks runs 24V, 40V, 60V and 80V as separate, non-interchangeable platforms. "Buying Greenworks" commits you to nothing; buying Greenworks 80V commits you completely.

The verdict

Choose EGO 56V if

  • You want the kit as sold to finish your lawn without a second pack
  • A riding mower on the same battery is plausible within ten years
  • You want the multi-head system for trimming, edging and pruning

Choose Greenworks 80V if

  • You are willing to buy a bigger pack, and want the lower running cost
  • The 4-year battery warranty matters to you (it should)
  • You want to compare specs before you buy rather than adjectives
  • A 40-minute recharge fits how you mow

Common questions

Is Greenworks 80V better than EGO 56V?
On voltage, yes. On energy in the box, no: the Greenworks flagship ships a 320Wh pack against EGO's 420Wh, and its own runtime claim is 33 minutes against EGO's 60. Greenworks answers with a 4-year battery warranty and a 40-minute recharge, both better than EGO's.
Are EGO and Greenworks batteries interchangeable?
No. 56V and 80V are different voltages with different terminals and different battery management systems. Neither manufacturer sells an adapter, and no third-party adapter is safe to use on a mower-sized load.
Why does the 80V mower run for less time than the 56V one?
Because runtime is set by watt-hours, not volts. 80V x 4.0Ah is 320Wh; 56V x 7.5Ah is 420Wh. The EGO simply ships a bigger tank. Fit a larger Greenworks pack and the gap closes.
Which brand publishes more useful specs?
Greenworks, clearly. It publishes blade RPM, weight, acreage rating, recharge time and warranty on both tool and battery. EGO publishes torque and runtime but not weight. For a buyer comparing on paper, that difference is worth something.
Does Greenworks 80V work with Greenworks 40V tools?
No. Greenworks runs several separate voltage lines (24V, 40V, 60V, 80V) and packs are not shared across them. Buying 'Greenworks' does not commit you to one platform; buying Greenworks 80V does.
