How long do electric lawn mower batteries last?

People asking this mean one of two completely different things. Here are both answers, kept apart.

We have not tested these units. Every spec on this page comes from the manufacturer's own documentation and is linked to it. Every computed figure is arithmetic you can redo. Prices are checked daily — last verified January 1, 1970. Here is exactly how we pick.

"How long does the battery last" is two questions wearing one sentence. One is about minutes and has a precise answer. The other is about years and mostly does not, because the industry does not publish the data.

Question one: how long per charge?

Between about 30 and 80 minutes on current flagship battery mowers. The number is set by watt-hours, not by brand: Greenworks claims 33 minutes from 320Wh, Toro claims 45 from 324Wh, and Ryobi claims 80 minutes from two 240Wh packs. Divide the pack's watt-hours by the mower's per-minute draw and you have your figure.

Watt-hours are nameplate (advertised volts x amp-hours) except Toro, which publishes 324Wh directly. Wh-per-minute is our division of those two published numbers.

Two useful things fall out of that table. First, the spread in per-minute draw is real but modest: 6.0 to 9.7Wh per minute across four 21-inch mowers. Second, every one of these claims is a best case — dry grass, cut regularly, at a sensible height. Thick, wet or overgrown grass raises the draw, sometimes sharply.

The arithmetic — Sizing a pack to your lawn
Take your mowing time in minutes (time it once)
Multiply by 8Wh/min as a working average for a 21 in deck
Add 30% margin for wet or overgrown grass
Example: 35 min x 8 = 280Wh, +30% = 364Wh needed
That rules out a 320Wh pack and points at 420Wh or two smaller ones

That is the whole calculation. It is why we keep saying to size the pack to the lawn rather than to the price tag — the full ten-year version lives in the cost calculator.

Question two: how many years?

Manufacturers warrant outdoor lithium packs for three to four years. Beyond the warranty term, no manufacturer in this category publishes a capacity- retention figure, so nobody can tell you honestly what you will have in year eight — including us.

Read that table the way a manufacturer's finance department reads it. A warranty term is a company's own estimate of how long a component survives, priced so that honoring it is cheaper than the sales it wins. When Greenworks puts four years on a battery and EGO puts three, Greenworks is making the more expensive promise.

Notice too that EGO warrants the tool for five years and the pack for three. That gap is the industry telling you which component it expects to fail.

What we genuinely do not know

This is where most articles on this question start estimating, and we are not going to.

  • We do not know the cycle life of these packs. None of the four brands here publishes a cycles-to-80%-capacity figure for outdoor packs, the way electric vehicle manufacturers do.
  • We do not know the cell chemistry per model. Different lithium chemistries age very differently, and none of these product pages says which is inside.
  • We have not run any of these packs for five years, because we have not run any of them at all. We have not tested these units and we say so on every page.

What we can tell you is that the general behavior of lithium cells is well established outside this industry: heat accelerates degradation, storage at full charge accelerates it, deep discharges are harder on a cell than shallow ones, and calendar age matters even for a pack that is never used. Those principles are not brand-specific and not in dispute. Applying them is the rest of this page.

Making a pack last

  1. Do not store packs in a hot shed over summer. Heat is the single largest controllable factor. A garage wall beats a metal shed roof.
  2. Do not store at 100% for months. If a pack is going into winter, running it down to roughly half and leaving it there is gentler than leaving it full.
  3. Let a hot pack cool before charging. Straight off a mower in August, it is the worst moment to push current back in. Most chargers wait for you; the ones that do not, you should.
  4. Prefer shallower discharges where it is convenient. Two packs each doing half the lawn is gentler than one pack doing all of it, which is a quiet argument for the two-pack kits.
  5. Charge indoors, at room temperature, and not on a freezing concrete floor in February.
Note what is missing from that list: any instruction to fully discharge a pack to "recalibrate" it. That advice is left over from nickel-cadmium tools and is actively harmful to lithium cells.

When to replace

There is no calendar answer, and any page that gives you one is guessing. There is a practical one.

Time your mow now, while the pack is new. Write the number on a bit of tape on the charger. A healthy 420Wh pack finishing your lawn in 38 minutes today is your baseline. When that same lawn needs a swap partway through, the pack has lost enough capacity to matter to you specifically — which is the only threshold that counts.

At that point you have a real decision, and it is a platform decision as much as a battery one: a replacement pack on a platform with four other tools on it is an easy purchase, and on a platform with one tool on it is often the moment people switch brands. That asymmetry is exactly why the platform choice is the one that matters.

What they don't

  • EGO publishes torque (7.0 ft-lbs), not motor wattage, so it cannot be compared directly against Greenworks' 1500W figure
  • The 7.5Ah pack that earns the runtime claim is also the expensive one to replace

your yard is under a quarter acre. You would be paying for 420Wh of headroom you will never discharge, and a 20 in push mower cuts the same grass.

What they don't

  • 320Wh included, the least of the three flagships -- and the 33-minute runtime claim reflects that
  • 75 lb is the only published weight here, and it is not light

you want one battery to finish a half-acre without a swap. Greenworks rates the mower for 1/2 acre but claims only 33 minutes on the included pack; those two numbers only reconcile if you buy a second battery.

Toro labels the pack 60V Max 6.0Ah and publishes 324Wh. 324 / 6.0 = 54V -- the nominal voltage, not the 60V max-charge figure on the sticker. Every brand's 'max volts' is roughly 11% above nominal, so a nameplate watt-hour number is always about 11% optimistic. This is the single most useful spec on this page.

What the numbers favor

  • Publishes a real watt-hour figure (324Wh) instead of leaving you to multiply the marketing voltage
  • 45 minutes from 324Wh, against Greenworks' 33 minutes from a nameplate 320Wh
  • 14-gauge steel deck, the only steel deck spec published on this page
  • SmartStow vertical storage -- a genuine constraint solver in a one-car garage

What they don't

  • 150-minute recharge is the slowest here by a wide margin
  • Toro's 60V line is narrower than EGO's or Ryobi's, so the platform grows less far

you are buying into a platform rather than a mower. Toro builds excellent mowers; the 60V Flex-Force tool range is not the one to bet a decade of yard tools on.

How long does a lawn mower battery last per charge?
Between roughly 30 and 80 minutes on current flagship mowers, set almost entirely by watt-hours. Greenworks claims 33 minutes from a 320Wh pack, Toro claims 45 from 324Wh, and Ryobi claims 80 from two 240Wh packs. Divide watt-hours by the tool's per-minute draw and you have your answer.
How many years will a lawn mower battery last?
Manufacturers warrant packs for 3 to 4 years. Nobody publishes a capacity-retention curve for these outdoor packs, so an honest answer is: warranted for 3-4 years, and beyond that we do not know, because no manufacturer says.
When should I replace my lawn mower battery?
When runtime has dropped far enough that you cannot finish the job on the packs you own. That is a practical threshold, not a calendar one: time your mow now while the pack is healthy, and you will recognize the day it stops being enough.
Does leaving the battery on the charger damage it?
Modern packs stop charging when full, so a charger will not overcharge one. The bigger factor is that lithium cells age faster when stored at full charge and at high temperatures, so a hot shed in August is harder on a pack than the charger is.
Do bigger batteries last more years, or just more minutes?
Potentially both. A larger pack does the same work in fewer full cycles, and cycle count is one driver of degradation. Cell chemistry, heat and storage conditions matter too, and none of those are published per model.
