On a small lawn, watt-hours stop being the constraint. You will never discharge a 420Wh pack mowing a quarter acre, so paying for one is paying for headroom you cannot use. What you will notice every single week is weight, storage footprint and whether the thing starts without a fight.

What actually matters under a third of an acre

FactorMatters on a small lawn?Why
Watt-hoursBarelyA quarter acre is roughly 25 minutes. Even a 160Wh pack covers that with margin.
WeightA lotYou lift it, turn it, and store it 25 times a year. 57.5 lb against 75 lb is a real difference.
Storage footprintA lotSmall lawns usually come with small sheds. Folding handles and vertical storage earn their keep.
Deck widthA little20 in vs 21 in is about 5% fewer passes. On a small lawn that is roughly a minute.
Self-propelOnly on slopesOn flat ground it adds weight, cost and battery draw for no benefit.
Recharge timeNot muchYou are using a fraction of the pack, so it is never empty when you finish.

The math for a quarter acre

A quarter acre is 10,890 square feet. With a 20-inch deck and realistic overlap you are covering roughly 1.5 ft per pass at walking pace, which works out to about 25 minutes of mowing. At a push mower's roughly 4Wh per minute, that is around 100Wh — comfortably inside a single 160Wh pack.
The arithmetic — Quarter acre, 20-inch deck
0.25 acre = 10,890 sq ft
20 in deck, ~10% overlap = ~1.5 ft effective per pass
10,890 / 1.5 = 7,260 linear feet to walk
At ~3 ft/sec = ~40 min of walking, less for turns and trimmed edges
Call it 25-35 min of actual cutting
x 4Wh/min (push mower draw) = 100-140Wh
The Greenworks LM2054 carries 160Wh. It fits.

Notice how much margin a 420Wh flagship would leave: roughly three times what the lawn needs. That is a pack you are paying for, storing, and eventually replacing, to do a job a third of it would cover. The full sizing tables are in what size mower do I need.

Notes on the picks

Why the 40V push mower wins here

The Greenworks LM2054 is the only mower on this page under 60 lb, and it claims 40 minutes from 160Wh — about 4.0Wh per minute, the most efficient figure of any mower we have specs for. Both facts come from the same cause: a 20-inch deck and no drive motor. On a small flat lawn that is not a compromise, it is the correct specification.

The trade-offs are real and published: a 120-minute recharge (three times the 80V model's 40) and a 1.2-inch minimum cut height that is lower than most cool-season lawns should ever be cut. Neither bites on a quarter acre, because you never empty the pack.

The Toro is here for storage, not power

Toro publishes SmartStow vertical storage on the 21356. If your mower shares a one-car garage with two bikes and a recycling bin, that specification is worth more than fifty watt-hours. It is also the only mower here with a published 14-gauge steel deck.

The EGO is on this page as the honest upper bound

If your "small" yard is really a third of an acre with slopes, or you already own EGO tools, the LM2135SP is a sound buy — the 8-position cut height from 1 to 4 inches is the widest published range anywhere on this site. Just be clear that you are buying it for the platform and the drive system, not because a small lawn needs 420Wh. It does not.

What not to buy for a small lawn

  • A two-battery kit. You will use one pack and store the other at full charge, which is the condition lithium cells age fastest in (more on that here).
  • A self-propelled mower for flat ground. Extra weight, extra cost, extra draw, no benefit. Slope is the reason to buy self-propel, not lawn size.
  • The largest pack in the range. Buy the pack that covers your lawn plus 30%, and put the difference toward the second tool.

If your lawn is bigger than you thought, the numbers change quickly — the large-yard page runs the same math at half an acre and above.

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
160Wh

40V x 4.0Ah = 160Wh. Note it claims 40 minutes on 160Wh where the 80V flagship claims 33 minutes on 320Wh -- a 20 in deck and no self-propel drive motor is why.

What the numbers favor

  • Lightest published weight on this page at 57.5 lb, and the only sub-60 lb mower here
  • Claims 40 minutes from 160Wh -- the best published minutes-per-watt-hour of any mower on this page
  • Same 3200 RPM blade speed as the 80V flagship
  • 4-in-1 deck at the entry price

What they don't

  • Push only -- no drive assist on any slope
  • 1.2 in minimum cut height is lower than most cool-season lawns should ever be cut
  • 120-minute recharge, three times the 80V model's 40 minutes

Our arithmetic — Published watt-hours
324Wh (Toro's own figure)

Toro labels the pack 60V Max 6.0Ah and publishes 324Wh. 324 / 6.0 = 54V -- the nominal voltage, not the 60V max-charge figure on the sticker. Every brand's 'max volts' is roughly 11% above nominal, so a nameplate watt-hour number is always about 11% optimistic. This is the single most useful spec on this page.

What the numbers favor

  • Publishes a real watt-hour figure (324Wh) instead of leaving you to multiply the marketing voltage
  • 45 minutes from 324Wh, against Greenworks' 33 minutes from a nameplate 320Wh
  • 14-gauge steel deck, the only steel deck spec published on this page
  • SmartStow vertical storage -- a genuine constraint solver in a one-car garage

What they don't

  • 150-minute recharge is the slowest here by a wide margin
  • Toro's 60V line is narrower than EGO's or Ryobi's, so the platform grows less far
Skip this one if

you are buying into a platform rather than a mower. Toro builds excellent mowers; the 60V Flex-Force tool range is not the one to bet a decade of yard tools on.

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
420Wh

56V x 7.5Ah = 420Wh, using EGO's advertised pack voltage.

What the numbers favor

  • 420Wh in the box -- the largest included pack of any flagship walk-behind on this page
  • Eight cut-height positions from 1 to 4 in, the widest published range here
  • Three interchangeable lower blades (mulching, high-lift bagging, extended runtime)
  • 5-year tool warranty, the longest published on this page

What they don't

  • EGO publishes torque (7.0 ft-lbs), not motor wattage, so it cannot be compared directly against Greenworks' 1500W figure
  • The 7.5Ah pack that earns the runtime claim is also the expensive one to replace
Skip this one if

Common questions

What size mower do I need for a small yard?
A 20-inch deck is enough for anything under about a third of an acre. Going wider saves a few minutes per mow and costs you weight, storage space and money, none of which you get back on a small lawn.
Do I need a self-propelled mower on a small lawn?
Usually not. Self-propel adds weight, cost and a drive motor that consumes battery. On flat ground under a third of an acre, a push mower is lighter to store and cheaper to own. Slope changes the answer, not size.
How many watt-hours for a quarter-acre lawn?
A quarter acre with a 20-inch deck is roughly 25 minutes of mowing. At about 4Wh per minute for a push mower, that is 100Wh, so a 160Wh pack covers it comfortably with margin for overgrown grass.
Is a 20-inch deck much slower than a 21-inch?
Barely. One inch of deck width is about a 5% difference in coverage per pass, which on a quarter-acre lawn is roughly a minute. The weight and storage difference is more noticeable in daily use.
Can I store a battery mower vertically?
Some of them. Toro publishes SmartStow vertical storage on the 21356, and several brands offer folding handles. It is worth checking before you buy if the mower lives in a shared garage or a small shed.
