Best mower for uneven ground

Uneven ground is the one mowing problem manufacturers publish almost nothing about. No cordless mower in our registry states a deck float range, a wheel diameter or a ground clearance. So this page ranks on the three specifications that do exist and do bear on the problem — and says plainly which ones are missing.

The short answer

Why uneven ground scalps

A mower deck is carried by its wheels. When a front wheel drops into a hollow, the deck tips forward and the blade — which is fixed relative to the deck, not to the grass — meets the ground on the rise beyond it. The result is the pale, shaved patch every bumpy lawn has.

That is why the number of height positions is the buying specification here. Eight steps across 3 inches (EGO) is a 0.43 inch increment; seven steps across 2.4 inches (Greenworks LM2054) is 0.4 inch. A mower with four coarse positions makes you choose between scalping and shaggy.

The three, on the specs that bear on it

1. EGO LM2135SP — the finest height ladder

Eight positions from 1 to 4 inches is the widest published range and the smallest published step in our registry. On uneven ground that is the whole game: you can raise the deck by less than half an inch at a time until the scalping stops, instead of jumping from too low to too tall.

The variable drive from 0.9 to 3.1 MPH is the second advantage. Slowing to a walk over ruts keeps the front wheels tracking instead of skipping, and EGO publishes both ends of the range rather than a vague "variable".

EGO publishes no weight for this machine, which on a lawn where you are lifting and steering constantly is a real gap.

2. Greenworks LM2054 — the lightest to muscle around

Fifty-seven and a half pounds, a 20 inch deck and seven cut positions from 1.2 to 3.6 inches. It is the only mower in our registry under 60 lb with a published weight, and on rough ground that matters twice: less mass to drop into each hollow, and less to lift when a wheel finds a root.

The trade is energy and drive. A 40V 4.0Ah pack is 160 watt-hours, rated to a third of an acre, and there is no self-propulsion — which on genuinely rough ground is arguably a feature, since a drive system dragging a mower across ruts is how scalping happens at speed.

3. Kobalt 80V — seven speeds to crawl with

Two 80V 4.0Ah packs (640Wh), a rating up to an acre, and a rear-wheel drive with seven discrete speed settings. On uneven ground the lowest of those settings is the useful one: a drive you can set slow and leave slow, rather than modulating by hand for an hour.

Rear-wheel drive also keeps traction where the weight transfers as the deck pitches — the reasoning is in rear-wheel drive mowers.

Kobalt publishes no cut-height range and no weight, which are precisely the two figures this page is about. It earns its place on drive control alone.

What actually fixes a bumpy lawn

1. Raise the deck first. Two notches up is free and usually enough. UMN Extension's mowing guidance already recommends mowing high; uneven ground is another reason to.
2. Change direction every mow. Repeating one pattern presses ruts in deeper — see mowing patterns guide.
3. Topdress in thin layers. A quarter inch of soil at a time during active growth, repeated across a season, levels hollows without smothering the grass.
4. Fix the cause. Ruts from a mower on soft ground, tunnelling, or a settled trench will all come back if you only fill the surface.
