Two acres is the size where the cordless category thins out fast. Walk-behind ratings stop at one acre, robot ratings stop at an eighth, and exactly one machine in our registry publishes a figure that reaches two. This page is about that machine and about what the alternatives really cost.

The short answer

The EGO Z6 ZT4204L is the only mower we hold specs for that publishes up to two acres per charge. It gets there with 2,240 nameplate watt-hours across four 56V 10.0Ah packs and a 42 inch deck, and it has six bays, so capacity is a purchase decision rather than a fixed ceiling.

From the EGO Z6 ZT4204L product page, checked 3 September 2026.

The arithmetic — What two acres costs this machine in energy
56V x 10.0Ah = 560Wh per pack
Four packs installed = 2,240Wh
Published coverage: up to 2 acres
2,240Wh / 2 acres = about 1,120Wh per acre
Walk-behind ratings imply about 640Wh per acre
A rider spends roughly 75% more energy per acre

That premium is the honest cost of the class. A 42 inch deck moving at speed does more work per minute and pays for it in watt-hours. What you buy back is time, and on two acres the time difference is measured in hours rather than minutes — the arithmetic is in how long it takes to mow an acre.

Two details on this machine matter more than they sound. The six bays mean range is expandable rather than fixed, and the packs are the identical 56V ARC Lithium units that run EGO's handheld tools — so a household already on the platform is not starting from zero. The five-year warranty covering charger as well as tool and battery is the broadest term in our registry.

EGO's own published watt-hour figure for this configuration does not reconcile with 56V x 10.0Ah x 4, so we publish our arithmetic (2,240Wh) and show the working rather than repeat a number we cannot verify.

2. Kobalt 80V dual bay — the walk-behind ceiling

If a rider is out of the question, this is the largest published walk-behind rating we hold: one acre, from 640Wh installed across two 80V 4.0Ah bays, with 80 published minutes and seven drive speeds.

On two acres it becomes a two-session machine. That is not a criticism — it is what the rating says, and Kobalt is one of only two brands willing to publish an acreage figure at all. Plan on charging between halves, or on a spare pair of packs.

The arithmetic — Two acres on the walk-behind ceiling
Kobalt rating: 1 acre on 640Wh installed
Two acres = two full charges of both bays
Published recharge: approx. 60-90 min
So: mow, wait roughly an hour, mow again
Or buy a second pair of packs and swap

3. EGO LM2135SP — the platform-sharing fallback

There is one situation where a 21 inch walk-behind is the right answer on two acres: when most of the two acres is not lawn. Plenty of large lots are a mown half-acre plus paddock, orchard or rough ground that gets cut twice a year, and buying a zero turn for that is buying a lot of machine for a small job.

The LM2135SP carries 420Wh, publishes 60 minutes, has the widest cut-height range here at 1-4 inches over eight positions, and — the reason it is on this page — runs the same 56V packs as the Z6. If you later buy the rider, nothing you own is stranded.

Every figure transcribed from the manufacturer's own product page, checked 3 September 2026. Coverage ratings are manufacturer claims under conditions none of them publish.

Who should not buy any of this

  • If only half an acre of the two is actually mown: buy for the mown half. The rest is a brush-cutting problem, not a mowing one.
  • If the ground is steep: no manufacturer of any riding mower in our registry publishes a slope limit. The only gradient figure we found from any mower manufacturer of any type is Segway's 16 degrees for a robot. Absence of a figure is not permission.
  • If storage is the constraint: a 42 inch deck needs somewhere to live for fifty-one weeks a year.

What we cannot tell you

We have not driven the Z6 or pushed either walk-behind. Coverage ratings are best-case claims, and two acres of real ground with trees, beds, slopes and a fence line is not two acres of open test field. Nobody publishes a figure for how much coverage those obstacles cost.

What is published is one two-acre claim, one one-acre claim, and the energy arithmetic that connects them. That is enough to size the purchase and to know which claims came from whom.

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
2,240Wh installed, 3,360Wh at full bays

56V x 10.0Ah = 560Wh per pack. Four packs = 2,240Wh; six bays filled = 3,360Wh. Against the published 2 acres on four packs, that is roughly 1,120Wh per acre -- the number to size any electric riding mower against.

What the numbers favor

  • Uses the identical 56V ARC Lithium packs as EGO's handheld tools -- the batteries are not stranded
  • Six battery bays, so range is a purchase decision rather than a fixed limit
  • 5-year warranty covering tool, battery AND charger
  • 32 published LED lights, which matters more than it sounds for dusk mowing

What they don't

  • Four 10.0Ah packs is a substantial share of the purchase price on its own
  • EGO's published watt-hour figure for this configuration does not reconcile with 56V x 10.0Ah x 4; we publish our own arithmetic (2,240Wh) and show the working rather than repeat a number we cannot verify

Source: Kobalt 80-Volt 21-in Self-propelled Battery Mower (2 batteries), lowes.com

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
640Wh installed (2 x 320Wh)

80V x 4.0Ah = 320Wh per pack; two bays = 640Wh installed. Kobalt's listing does not state whether the two ports discharge simultaneously or in sequence, so we do not claim either -- what is verifiable is that 640Wh is on the machine when you start.

What the numbers favor

  • 640Wh installed across two bays, the most of any walk-behind on this page
  • Rated to 1 acre, twice the Greenworks 80V flagship's half-acre rating
  • Seven published speed settings on the self-propel drive
  • All Kobalt 80V packs are cross-compatible across the 80V outdoor line

What they don't

  • Sold through Lowe's only, so availability and price track one retailer
  • The listing does not publish weight, cut-height range or a noise figure
  • Kobalt's 80V outdoor range is narrower than EGO's or Ryobi's
Skip this one if

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
420Wh

56V x 7.5Ah = 420Wh, using EGO's advertised pack voltage.

What the numbers favor

  • 420Wh in the box -- the largest included pack of any flagship walk-behind on this page
  • Eight cut-height positions from 1 to 4 in, the widest published range here
  • Three interchangeable lower blades (mulching, high-lift bagging, extended runtime)
  • 5-year tool warranty, the longest published on this page

What they don't

  • EGO publishes torque (7.0 ft-lbs), not motor wattage, so it cannot be compared directly against Greenworks' 1500W figure
  • The 7.5Ah pack that earns the runtime claim is also the expensive one to replace
Skip this one if

Common questions

What electric mower can cut two acres?
The EGO Z6 ZT4204L is the only machine we hold specs for that publishes a two-acre coverage figure per charge. It carries four 56V 10.0Ah packs -- 2,240 nameplate watt-hours -- across a 42 inch deck, with six bays available for up to 3,360Wh.
Can a walk-behind mower do two acres?
Not on one charge and not in one sensible session. The highest walk-behind rating we hold is Kobalt's one acre on 640Wh installed. Two acres on a 21 inch deck also runs to roughly four hours of walking at typical self-propel speeds, before any recharging.
How much battery does two acres need?
On the walk-behind ratings, roughly 640 watt-hours per acre, so about 1,280Wh. The EGO Z6 carries 2,240Wh for its published two acres -- about 1,120Wh per acre -- which is the honest premium a 42 inch deck moving at speed costs.
Is a zero turn better than a lawn tractor for two acres?
We hold no cited spec sheet for an electric lawn tractor, so we will not rank one. What we can say about the zero turn we do hold specs for is that it publishes 8 MPH, six battery bays and a five-year warranty covering tool, battery and charger.
How long does two acres take to mow?
On a 42 inch deck at 4 MPH with a 10% overlap allowance, roughly 80 minutes of cutting before turns and trimming -- our arithmetic, not a manufacturer claim. The same two acres on a 21 inch deck at 2.5 MPH works out at over four hours.
What if my lot is bigger than two acres?
You are past every published rating we hold. The Z6's six bays take it to 3,360Wh, which at its own energy rate implies about three acres, but EGO does not publish that figure and neither will we present it as theirs.
