How many acres can an electric mower cut on one charge?

One number answers this for every machine on the market, and it falls straight out of the manufacturers' own claims.

About 1,120 watt-hours per acre on a 42-inch electric deck. EGO publishes up to 2 acres on four 56V 10.0Ah packs (2,240Wh) and up to 3 acres on six (3,360Wh), and both claims resolve to the same figure. Multiply your acreage by 1,120Wh and you know how much battery the job needs.

The arithmetic — Two published claims, one answer

Two independent coverage claims, made at different battery counts, landing on the same energy-per-acre figure. That internal consistency is what a spec sheet looks like when the numbers come from measurement rather than marketing, and it is why we are comfortable using 1,120Wh as a planning figure.

Why walk-behinds hit a different limit

A walk-behind does not run out of battery at an acre — the dual-bay Kobalt carries 640Wh and its manufacturer rates it for exactly that. It runs out of afternoon.

Half the distance at nearly three times the speed. So the honest threshold is not "the battery cannot do it" but "you would rather not walk 27,000 feet". Both are legitimate reasons to buy, and only one of them is about watt-hours.

At the other end of the scale

Below about an eighth of an acre the question inverts: instead of a bigger machine you can have no machine at all. A wire-free robot mower covers up to 1/8 acre at a published 40% duty cycle and 58 dB, quietly, while you are somewhere else.

What does not work is stretching either answer past its published limit. A robot rated for 5,400 square feet does not scale to a quarter acre by running longer, and a rider is absurd on a small lot. Match the machine to the acreage using the table above, and the rest of the decision gets easy.

What this figure does not account for

  • Obstacles. Trees, beds and a swing set cost time and energy in turns that open-field coverage claims do not include.
  • Slope. Climbing costs energy. No riding mower manufacturer here publishes a gradient derating, or a maximum slope at all.
  • Grass condition. Coverage claims assume maintained grass; a fortnight of growth after rain is a different load entirely.
  • Pack age. Lithium capacity declines over the pack's life, and nobody in this category publishes a retention curve — we say so plainly here.

56V x 10.0Ah = 560Wh per pack. Four packs = 2,240Wh; six bays filled = 3,360Wh. Against the published 2 acres on four packs, that is roughly 1,120Wh per acre -- the number to size any electric riding mower against.

What the numbers favor

  • Uses the identical 56V ARC Lithium packs as EGO's handheld tools -- the batteries are not stranded
  • Six battery bays, so range is a purchase decision rather than a fixed limit
  • 5-year warranty covering tool, battery AND charger
  • 32 published LED lights, which matters more than it sounds for dusk mowing

What they don't

  • Four 10.0Ah packs is a substantial share of the purchase price on its own
  • EGO's published watt-hour figure for this configuration does not reconcile with 56V x 10.0Ah x 4; we publish our own arithmetic (2,240Wh) and show the working rather than repeat a number we cannot verify
Skip this one if

your lot is under an acre. A 21 in walk-behind finishes a half acre in the time it takes to get a zero turn out of the shed, and costs a fifth as much.

Up to 2 acres on a 42-inch electric zero turn carrying four 10.0Ah packs, and up to 3 acres with six packs fitted. Both figures come from EGO and both resolve to about 1,120 watt-hours per acre, which is the number to size any electric rider against.
How many watt-hours does it take to mow one acre?
About 1,120Wh on a 42-inch riding deck. On a 21-inch walk-behind it is closer to 800Wh of energy but roughly 110 minutes of walking, which is usually the binding constraint rather than the battery.
Can a walk-behind battery mower cut an acre?
Yes, with two batteries aboard. Kobalt rates its dual-bay 80V mower at one acre with 640Wh installed. It is achievable on maintained grass and it is roughly 100 minutes of walking, which is why most people at that size move to a rider.
Does tall or wet grass reduce the acreage?
Yes, and manufacturers' coverage claims assume maintained grass. Add roughly 30% to your watt-hour requirement for wet or overgrown conditions, the same margin we apply to walk-behind sizing.
What if my property is over three acres?
You are at the edge of what current battery riding mowers cover on one charge. Price a second set of packs into the decision rather than discovering the limit in July, and note EGO publishes roughly a two-hour recharge for four 10.0Ah packs.
