7.1 lb bare and a published 30-minute recharge on a 160Wh pack. The recharge figure is worth more on a small lot than anywhere else: this is a tool used every second or third weekend, and the pack is usually flat when you reach for it.

It also publishes a 6200 RPM motor speed and a four-year battery warranty. The 0.080 in line is a genuine limitation for heavy weeds and close to irrelevant for lawn edges and soft growth, which is what a small lot mostly has.

3. EGO EA0800 — if the edge is the actual job

On a lot where the trimming is really just a driveway edge and a path, an 8 inch edger on a guide wheel cuts a defined line that no hand-held trimmer will match. EGO publishes an adjustable depth of up to 3 inches and runtimes at four pack sizes.

The condition is the same one that applies to every multi-head product: it needs a power head. Buy it alongside the ST1521S and you have both jobs covered from one motor and one pack. Buy it alone and you have a shaft with a blade on it. The decision is in string trimmer or edger.

What to skip

• The 17 inch adjustable head. Ryobi's RY402110 is an excellent trimmer and the wrong shape for this lot — 12.9 lb loaded on a 72.25 inch shaft, sized for open verge.
• Big packs. Anything above about 160Wh is weight you carry for runtime you do not use.
• 0.095 in line, unless you have a rough boundary. Heavier line is for weed stems, and it costs a little efficiency to spin.
