The cordless yard kit for a small property

Yard tool advice is written for a lot with a fence line, a paddock and an acre of grass. On a townhouse plot or a small suburban lawn nearly all of it is oversized, and buying to that advice leaves you with a shed you cannot walk into.

Sizing the packs down, deliberately

The single biggest saving on a small property is not buying capacity you never discharge. The arithmetic is straightforward and it argues for the smallest kit pack every time.

One platform, because storage is the real constraint

On an acre, running two battery platforms is an inconvenience. On a small property it is a shed you cannot use. Three tools on three platforms means three chargers, three pack types and three sets of spares.

The complication worth naming: it is possible to buy three tools from one brand and still end up on three platforms. Buying for storage

This is the criterion nobody publishes and small-property owners care about most. Very few manufacturers help, but two do.

What to skip, and why

• A riding mower. Obviously, but also a self-propelled walk-behind if the ground is flat. That is a drive motor and 17.5 lb you carry for nothing.
• A backpack blower. The EGO LB6000 publishes 180 minutes on low and weighs 12.5 lb on a harness. A harness for a ten-minute job is the wrong trade.
• High peak CFM. 650 or 765 CFM in a courtyard moves your gravel, your mulch and your neighbor's patience. Buy for the low end of the dial.
• A dedicated edger, at first. Use the trimmer sideways for a season. If the wandering line along the path bothers you, an attachment is the cheap fix.
• A tow-behind aerator. 94 lb and it needs a tractor. Rent a walk-behind for a weekend instead — see renting versus buying.
• Heavy line. 0.080 in handles lawn edges and soft growth; 0.095 in is for weed stems you probably do not have.

Where the kit grows, if it does

1. An edger attachment, if the path edge bothers you. Cheapest addition on a platform you already own.
2. A hedge trimmer, if there is a boundary hedge. Extension guidance is twice a year, so it is a small tool doing a small job.
3. A pressure washer, which is the one rarely-used tool that earns its space because the uses multiply.
4. A pole saw attachment, only if you have overhanging limbs and already own a power head.
5. A second pack, last. On this lot size you will probably never need one.

What we cannot tell you

We do not publish prices, so nothing here is a budget. We also cannot tell you your lot size — and it is the input every recommendation on this page depends on, so it is worth twenty minutes to measure properly.

What is published and decisive: a third of an acre is where push-mower ratings stop, 15 inches is the narrowest trimmer swath available, 225 CFM is the lowest published blower setting, and one weekly session on a small lot costs under 200 watt-hours in total.
