Multi-head attachment systems: one power head, several tools

There is one purchase route in cordless yard tools that is cheaper per capability than anything else, and most people find it by accident after they have already bought three separate machines. It is worth understanding before the second purchase, not after the fourth.

The idea, and why it saves money

This is the same principle as a battery platform, one level further in. A platform means you buy the battery once. A multi-head system means you buy the motor once as well.

We do not quote prices, so the argument here is structural rather than numerical: count the motors.

The break-even is the second attachment. With one attachment you have bought a power head to do one job, and a standalone tool would usually have been simpler and cheaper. With two you are ahead, and with three the gap is substantial.

The trimmer that is already half a system

There is a middle route worth knowing about. The EGO ST1521S string trimmer publishes a carbon fiber split shaft, which means the tool separates and takes the same multi-head attachments — it is a trimmer and a power head at once.

Runtime across the heads

A useful property of this system is that the pack is shared, so you can plan a whole afternoon in one currency.

Those are computed from published figures at different pack sizes and assume the published draws hold, which is a real assumption and we are labeling it as one. The point is not the exact numbers; it is that a shared pack lets you do the arithmetic at all.

Where the system stops

• Anything with a different form factor. A mower deck, a walk-behind anything, a pressure washer — none of these can hang off a trimmer shaft.
• Tools where balance matters more than modularity. The EGO HT2410 hedge trimmer is 6.17 lb bare with a 24 inch blade and a published 1 inch cut capacity. That balance is the point of the tool, and a shaft-mounted version is a different machine, not the same one cheaper.

What we cannot tell you

We have not assembled or used any of this. How quickly heads swap in practice, whether the coupling loosens over seasons, and how the balance feels with a 10 inch saw on the end of a 38 inch pole plus a power head are all outside what a spec sheet covers.

The published facts are enough for the purchase decision: attachments carry no motor and no battery, they need a specific power head, they publish real runtime and work-per-charge figures, and the economics turn at the second one.
