Best gifts for landscapers, and why an attachment beats a tool

They own better tools than you would buy them. What they do not own is the fourth head for the power head they already carry.

Buying a tool for someone who uses tools professionally is the hardest gift on this entire site, for a simple reason: whatever you can afford, they already own a better one, chosen on duty cycle rather than on price. The thing that works instead is the attachment. A pro carries a power head; a power head with one head on it is one tool, and with four heads it is four. The heads cost gift money, they are the part people put off buying, and they are not a judgment on the tool the person already owns. The catch, and there is one, is that you have to know which system they run.

The short answer

Ask one question first: what attachment system do they run? If the answer is RYOBI EXPAND-IT, TrimmerPlus or Poulan Pro, buy the RYOBI EXPAND-IT 10 in brush cutter — the head that cuts the woody growth a string trimmer wraps on. If the answer is EGO and they have a PH1400 or PH1420 power head, buy the EGO EA0820 edger attachment. If they have no attachment-capable power head at all, the Greenworks 80V 2123802 is the one to start them on, because Greenworks publishes that it accepts Poulan Pro, RYOBI Expand-It and TrimmerPlus heads — so it does not lock them into one catalogue. And if you cannot find out what they run, buy the Corona GT 3050 rake at about $17, which needs no platform at all. Live prices are on each button.

The one question, and why it decides everything

Attachment fit is not universal, and getting it wrong turns a thoughtful gift into an unreturnable one. There are a handful of systems and they are not cross-compatible by default.

Our multi-head attachment systems page covers the systems properly, including which heads exist for each.

Every specification below is transcribed from the manufacturer's own product page, cited at the bottom, and where a maker publishes nothing — which happens twice on this page — we say so rather than fill the gap from a listing.

1. Greenworks 80V 2123802 — the power head to start them on

If they do not have an attachment-capable power head, this is the gift that unlocks every other gift for the next five years. Greenworks publishes a 14 to 16 in adjustable cutting path, 0.080 and 0.095 in line compatibility, a brushless motor, an 80V 2.5Ah pack (200Wh) and up to 50 minutes of runtime — and, crucially, that it accepts Poulan Pro, RYOBI Expand-It and TrimmerPlus attachments. That last line is why it is here rather than a competitor: it does not restrict future heads to one manufacturer's catalogue.

The arithmetic — the published energy, and what the runtime claim implies

Published pack: 80V x 2.5Ah = 200Wh nameplate

Published runtime: up to 50 minutes

200Wh / 50 min = 4.0 Wh per minute of trimming

That is a useful figure to carry, because it lets you price a second pack in minutes rather than in amp-hours. A 4.0Ah 80V pack is 320Wh, which by the same rate is about 80 minutes. Note this is nameplate watt-hours at Greenworks' advertised voltage, our standard convention across this site.

It is also the most expensive thing on this page by a long way, which is the honest caveat: at this price you are buying the platform, not the gift, and a pro may already have strong views about which platform that should be. If you are not sure, the attachments below are the lower-risk purchase.

2. RYOBI EXPAND-IT 10 in brush cutter — the head they do not own

This is the attachment most likely to be missing. A string head cuts grass and soft weeds and then wraps, stalls and spits line the moment it meets a sapling or a bramble, and a pro meets saplings and brambles constantly. A 10 in reversible Tri-Arc steel blade cuts them. RYOBI publishes the blade size, the reversible Tri-Arc design, the model (RYBRC) and fit with the EXPAND-IT system and others.

Two honest notes. The trade is width: a 10 in blade against a 14 to 16 in string path, so it is a head to swap on for the woody stuff rather than one to leave fitted — our string trimmer versus brush cutter page draws that line in detail. And RYOBI publishes no weight, no guard detail and no warranty on the product page for this attachment, which for a steel-bladed tool is a thinner spec sheet than we would like. Our brush cutters page covers the class.

#ad Check the RYOBI EXPAND-IT 10" Brush Cutter Attachment (RYBRC) price on Amazon — how we're funded.

3. EGO EA0820 edger attachment — if and only if they run EGO

For someone on EGO with a power head, this is a clean gift: an 8 in blade, up to 3 in of adjustable edging depth with a guide wheel and a depth adjustment knob, on a carbon fiber shaft. Edging is the job pros are judged on from the street, and a dedicated head with a depth stop cuts the same line every visit — which is the difference between a yard that looks maintained and one that looks mown.

The condition is absolute and EGO states it plainly: this attachment requires a PH1400 or PH1420 power head, sold separately. Without one it is a shaft with a blade on the end. So do not buy this on a guess that they are "on EGO" — confirm the power head model, because EGO sells plenty of trimmers that are not attachment-capable. Our edgers page covers standalone alternatives if the answer turns out to be no.

4. Corona GT 3050 ExtendaHANDLE rake — the no-risk one

About seventeen dollars, no battery, no platform, no compatibility question. The GT 3050 is a short-handled rake whose handle extends, which makes it the tool for the work a full-size rake physically cannot do: inside shrub beds, under decks, between foundation plantings, behind the AC unit. Pros clear those spaces by hand constantly and rarely own a tool for it.

One thing to be honest about before you repeat a number from a listing: Corona's own page publishes the handle as adjusting from 18 in to 32 in, while the retail listing claims 18 to 36 in and "extends reach to 34 inches". Corona does not support the longer figures, so we publish Corona's. Our leaf rakes page ranks it second in the category for exactly that mix of a real spec sheet and a listing that overstates it.

What not to buy a pro

  • A bare tool on a platform you are guessing at. The same trap as any battery gift, with higher stakes because pros standardise on one system across a truck.
  • A consumer-duty version of something they already run. They did not buy the cheap one for a reason, and a second one does not help.
  • Safety gear without knowing sizing. Chaps in the wrong size do not get worn, which is worse than no gift. Our chainsaw safety gear page covers it if you do know.
  • Anything novelty. This is someone's trade. A joke shovel is a joke shovel.

Verdict

Ask what system they run, then buy a head for it. The RYOBI brush cutter is the attachment most likely to be missing and the one that opens up work a string head cannot do. The EGO EA0820 is excellent for an EGO power head owner and useless to anyone else, so confirm the PH1400 or PH1420 first. The Greenworks 2123802 is the generous option that starts them on a system that does not lock them in. And the Corona GT 3050 is the one gift on this page that cannot be wrong, at about seventeen dollars.

Our arithmetic — Energy per minute of trimming
4.0Wh/min

80V x 2.5Ah = 200 watt-hours, and Greenworks publishes up to 50 minutes of runtime, so 200 / 50 = 4.0Wh per minute at the advertised voltage. That is the trimming figure. Greenworks publishes no runtime with a brush blade fitted, and cutting woody stems draws more than trimming grass, so expect the blade to spend that 200Wh faster.

What the numbers favor

  • Takes three brands of attachment, so the blade is not a proprietary purchase
  • Publishes both watt-hours and runtime, which makes Wh/min computable
  • 4-year warranty on tool and battery
  • Adjustable 14-16 in cutting path trades width for runtime

What they don't

  • 9.15 lb before you add a battery or a steel blade
  • No published runtime with a brush cutter attachment fitted
  • 80V is a separate platform from Greenworks' own 40V and 60V lines

Our arithmetic — Cutting width against a string head
10 in blade vs a 14-16 in string path

The blade cuts a 10 in swath where the same power head swings 14 to 16 inches of line. You lose about a third of the width and gain the ability to cut woody stems that shred line on contact. That trade is the whole reason a blade exists, and it is why nobody uses one to cut a lawn edge.

What the numbers favor

  • Reversible blade doubles the usable edges before sharpening
  • Fits the Expand-It coupler, which several brands share
  • Steel blade cuts saplings and woody stems that stop string dead

What they don't

  • RYOBI publishes almost nothing: no weight, no guard detail, no warranty term on the page
  • The previous version of this attachment is listed as discontinued
  • A spinning steel blade throws debris and kicks back -- different risk class from string
Skip this one if

Our arithmetic — The discrepancy, stated as a range
32 in. or 36 in., depending whose page you read

Corona publishes "adjusts from 18 in. to 32 in." on its own product page for GT 3050. The Amazon listing for the same SKU says 18 to 36 inches and "extends reach to 34 inches". That is a 4 inch gap on the single specification that defines an extendable rake, and we cannot reconcile it. We publish the maker's figure and flag the listing's, because buying on the longer number and receiving the shorter one is the failure mode. If you need reach, this is not the tool at either figure -- the 54 in handle on the RK 24002 is.

What the numbers favor

  • Solves the job a long rake physically cannot: inside a bed, under a shrub, behind a downspout
  • Aluminum rather than hardwood, so it can live in a damp shed
  • Non-slip grip and a hanging ring, both published
  • Rust- and chip-resistant coating published by name rather than implied
  • The same lifetime warranty as the full-size rake, at the lowest price of any product in our registry

What they don't

  • Corona publishes 18 to 32 in.; the retail listing claims 18 to 36 in. and 34 in. of reach
  • No tine count and no head width published at all, so it cannot be compared with a full-size rake
  • No weight published
  • At 32 in. fully extended it is a one-handed hand tool, not a short leaf rake -- you will still be bending
  • A California Proposition 65 warning appears on the product page
Skip this one if

you want a small leaf rake for a small lawn. This is a bed-and-border tool at 18 to 32 inches; a small lawn still wants a full-length handle, and the RK 24002 is the one on this page.

Common questions

What do you get someone who landscapes for a living?
An attachment for the power head they already carry, not another tool. A pro's trimmer, blower and mower are chosen on duty cycle and are usually better than anything a gift budget buys. What they often do not have is the brush cutter head, the edger head or the pole saw head that turns one power head into four tools -- and those are gift-priced.
Do I need to know which battery system they use?
For an attachment, yes -- and that is the one question to ask before you buy. Attachment fit is split between a handful of systems: RYOBI EXPAND-IT, TrimmerPlus, Poulan Pro and EGO's own carbon fiber shafts. Greenworks publishes that its 2123802 power head accepts Poulan Pro, RYOBI Expand-It and TrimmerPlus attachments, which is why that combination is on this page.
Is a brush cutter attachment better than a string trimmer head?
For woody growth, yes. String cuts grass and soft weeds; a steel Tri-Arc blade cuts saplings and brambles that wrap and stall a string head. The trade is cutting width -- a 10 in blade against a 14 to 16 in string path -- so it is a specialist head to swap on, not a replacement. Our string trimmer versus brush cutter page covers where the line is.
What is a good cheap gift for a landscaper?
A Corona GT 3050 ExtendaHANDLE rake at about $17. It reaches into shrub beds and under decks where a full-size rake cannot go, needs no battery and no platform, and is cheap enough to be a stocking gift. Worth knowing before you buy: Corona's own page says the handle adjusts from 18 to 32 in while the retail listing claims 18 to 36 in, so do not promise the longer figure.
Should I buy a pro a spare battery instead?
It is a genuinely good gift if -- and only if -- you know the exact platform and voltage. Get it wrong and a $120 pack is unreturnable and unusable. An attachment has the same risk, which is why the one no-risk item on this page is the hand rake.
Is an EGO edger attachment a good gift?
Only for someone already running an EGO power head, and EGO is specific about which: the EA0820 requires a PH1400 or PH1420, sold separately. If they have one, an 8 in edger head with up to 3 in of adjustable depth on a carbon fiber shaft is an excellent gift. If they do not, it is an expensive paperweight.
What about safety gear as a gift?
Reasonable, and often genuinely needed -- but a pro usually has strong opinions about fit, and chaps in the wrong size do not get worn. Our chainsaw safety gear page covers what is worth having if you know their sizing.
