A cordless saw removes the fuel system, the air filter and the spark plug. What remains is the part that actually cuts, and every item on that short list appears in published safety guidance rather than in a performance section. That is the right way to think about all of it.
Battery out, every time
The three things, from published guidance
CDC chainsaw guidance lists the machine-side checks explicitly, and they map exactly onto the maintenance a battery saw still needs.

Chain tension
Tension is the check people do once at purchase and then forget. A chain that is too loose can derail; one that is too tight loads the bar and the motor and wears both. Chains also stretch in use and slacken as they cool.
- Pack out.
- Check tension cold, before the first cut of a session.
- Adjust to the figure in the tool's own manual, which is the only authority we will point you to.
- Recheck after the first few cuts, when a new chain has settled.
- Recheck during long sessions, because a hot chain behaves differently from a cold one.
Bar and chain oil
This is the item most often forgotten on a battery saw, precisely because everything else about fluids has gone away. The chain still runs against the bar at speed, and the oil is what stops that contact destroying both.
- Check the reservoir before every session, not when the saw starts complaining.
- Keep the oiler port and bar groove clear. Packed sawdust in the groove is a common reason oil stops reaching the chain even when the reservoir is full.
- Watch for a dry bar. Discoloration or blueing at the nose means the oil is not getting there.
- Automatic is not unlimited. The EGO PSA1000 publishes automatic lubrication, which handles delivery, not supply.

Sharpness, and when to replace instead
A sharp chain feeds itself into the wood; you guide it rather than push it. The symptoms of a dull one are consistent and easy to read.

On whether to sharpen or replace: chains are commodity items specified by three numbers, and on the CS1804 those are a common set — 3/8 inch pitch, 0.050 inch gauge, 62 drive links. The pole saw's 0.043 inch narrow kerf is a less common size. Both are covered in the chainsaw chain guide.

Cleaning and storage
- Pack out, then clear sawdust from the bar groove, around the sprocket and from the oiler port.
- Wipe the bar and check for burrs or uneven wear along the rails.
- Fit the scabbard. A bare chain in a shed is a hazard and a chain that gets knocked against concrete is a blunt one.
- Store the pack indoors, at the charge level the manual specifies. We publish no storage temperature or percentage because no manufacturer page we cite states one.
- Keep a spare chain with the saw, with the three fitment numbers written on the packet.

What we cannot tell you
No manufacturer we cite publishes a chain tension figure, a sharpening angle, a file size, a bar oil consumption rate or a chain life. Those all belong to the tool's own manual and to the chain packaging, and we have deliberately left every one of them blank rather than invent a number.
What is published, and what this page is built on, is the CDC list: sharpen the teeth, lubricate the bar, keep the tension right, follow the manufacturer's instructions, match the saw to the job and check the wood for hazards.

280Wh (56V x 5.0Ah) over 300 published cuts = about 0.93Wh per cut. A useful way to size a pack: 100 cuts of firewood needs roughly 93Wh, so a 2.5Ah pack covers it with margin.
What the numbers favor
- Publishes work done (300 cuts on a stated material) rather than a vague runtime
- Standard 3/8 in pitch, 0.050 in gauge chain -- replacements are commodity items
- 18 in bar on a consumer cordless saw
- Runs on the same 56V packs as the mower, blower and trimmer
What they don't
- 14.5 lb with the battery fitted is heavy for extended overhead work
- The 300-cut figure is on a 4x4; hardwood rounds will be a fraction of it
your cutting is limbs under 6 in. An 18 in bar is more saw than that needs, and a 10 in pole saw keeps you off the ladder.
