Pole saw or chainsaw: which does your job need?

The published energy per cut favors the chainsaw. The published safety guidance favors the pole saw. Where the branch is decides between them.

These two tools overlap less than people expect. The comparison is not really about which cuts better — it is about whether the wood you need to cut is above your waist or below it, and published safety guidance is unusually direct about that.

The short answer

Below waist height, chainsaw: an 18 inch bar, about 0.93 watt-hours per cut and up to 300 published cuts on a 4x4 per 280Wh pack. Above waist height, pole saw: a 10 inch bar on a 38 inch pole at 4.17 lb, because CDC guidance is to always cut at waist level or below with a chainsaw.

Energy per cut, and why it is not a verdict

The arithmetic — Watt-hours per published cut
CS1804: 56V x 5.0Ah = 280Wh, up to 300 cuts on a 4x4
280 / 300 = about 0.93Wh per cut
PSA1000: 56V x 2.5Ah = 140Wh, up to 70 cuts
140 / 70 = about 2.0Wh per cut
About 2.2x more energy per cut on the pole saw
These two cut counts are measured on different jobs. EGO states a 4x4 for the chainsaw and does not state a material for the pole saw, so the ratio describes each tool doing the work it is rated for rather than a like-for-like chain comparison. Treat it as directional.

What it is good for is sizing. A hundred limb cuts is about 200 watt-hours on the pole saw; three hundred bench cuts through a 4x4 is about 280 on the chainsaw. Both are within one decent pack, which is worth knowing before you buy two.

The published guidance that settles most cases

CDC chainsaw guidance is to always cut at waist level or below, to ensure that you maintain secure control. That single sentence removes most of the overlap between these tools.

The weight difference reinforces it. 14.5 lb with a battery fitted is manageable at bench height and a lot of tool to hold up; 4.17 lb on a pole is designed for exactly that posture. The full safety guidance is in cordless chainsaw safety.

The buying complication

These two are not sold the same way, and that changes the arithmetic.

  • The CS1804 is a kit. It arrives with a 5.0Ah pack and a charger and works out of the box.
  • The PSA1000 is an attachment. No motor, no battery mount. It needs an EGO PH1400 or PH1420 power head, or an ST1521S trimmer, whose split carbon fiber shaft doubles as one.
  • They share a platform but not a chain. Same 56V packs, different gauges — 0.050 in against 0.043 in narrow kerf — so two spare chains.

If you are already on the EGO multi-head system the pole saw is one of the cheapest capabilities you can add. If you are not, buying a power head to reach one branch is the expensive route — the economics are in multi-head attachment systems.

Which to buy first

Chainsaw first, if

  • Wood arrives as logs and needs bucking
  • You cut firewood
  • Storm cleanup on fallen material is the likely use
  • You want one tool that works without buying a system

Pole saw first, if

  • The job is overhanging limbs and always has been
  • You already own an EGO power head or an ST1521S trimmer
  • You would otherwise be on a ladder
  • Everything you cut is under 10 inches

What we cannot tell you

We have cut nothing with either tool. EGO publishes no cut material for the pole saw and no maximum cut diameter for the chainsaw, so the two published work figures are not directly comparable and we have said so wherever they appear.

What is settled: 18 inches of bar against 10, 14.5 lb against 4.17, about 0.93 watt-hours per cut against about 2.0, two non-interchangeable chains, and a published instruction to keep chainsaw cuts at waist level or below.

Our arithmetic — Energy per cut
~0.93Wh per 4x4 cut

280Wh (56V x 5.0Ah) over 300 published cuts = about 0.93Wh per cut. A useful way to size a pack: 100 cuts of firewood needs roughly 93Wh, so a 2.5Ah pack covers it with margin.

What the numbers favor

  • Publishes work done (300 cuts on a stated material) rather than a vague runtime
  • Standard 3/8 in pitch, 0.050 in gauge chain -- replacements are commodity items
  • 18 in bar on a consumer cordless saw
  • Runs on the same 56V packs as the mower, blower and trimmer

What they don't

  • 14.5 lb with the battery fitted is heavy for extended overhead work
  • The 300-cut figure is on a 4x4; hardwood rounds will be a fraction of it
Skip this one if

your cutting is limbs under 6 in. An 18 in bar is more saw than that needs, and a 10 in pole saw keeps you off the ladder.

140Wh (56V x 2.5Ah) over 70 published cuts = about 2.0Wh per cut, roughly double the CS1804's 0.93Wh -- a narrow-kerf chain on a long pole works harder per cut than a saw you can lean on.

Common questions

Do I need a pole saw or a chainsaw?
Height decides it. CDC chainsaw guidance is to always cut at waist level or below to maintain secure control, so anything above that is pole saw work. Below waist height a chainsaw is faster, more efficient per cut and handles far bigger wood.
Which uses less battery per cut?
The chainsaw, by roughly half. EGO publishes up to 300 cuts on a 4x4 from a 280Wh pack for the CS1804 -- about 0.93 watt-hours per cut -- and up to 70 cuts from a 140Wh pack for the PSA1000 pole saw, about 2.0 watt-hours per cut.
Why does a pole saw use more energy per cut?
Different chain and a much longer lever. The PSA1000 runs a 0.043 in narrow-kerf gauge on a 38 in pole; the CS1804 runs a 0.050 in gauge on a saw you can lean into. The two published cut counts are also measured on different jobs, so the comparison is directional.
How thick can a pole saw cut?
EGO publishes a 10 inch bar and a 10 inch maximum cut diameter for the PSA1000. That covers most limb work; anything larger, or anything at the base of a trunk, is chainsaw territory.
Can I use a chainsaw on a ladder?
CDC guidance is to cut at waist level or below to ensure secure control, which rules out a running chainsaw held overhead from a ladder. That combination is precisely the situation pole saws exist to remove.
Do they use the same chain?
No. Both publish a 3/8 inch pitch, but the CS1804 uses a 0.050 in gauge and the PSA1000 a 0.043 in narrow kerf. Same brand, same battery, two non-interchangeable spare chains.
