Battery lawn mower maintenance: what is actually left to do
Going cordless removes five maintenance categories and adds one. Here is the short list that remains.

The nicest thing about a cordless mower is how short this page is. Five jobs a gas mower needs simply do not exist, and what is left is a blade, a deck and a battery you store sensibly.
What is no longer on the list
- Oil changes
- Spark plugs
- Air filters
- Fuel stabilizer and winterizing the fuel system
- Carburetor cleaning, which is the most common failure on a stored gas mower
That is the practical half of the battery versus gas comparison, and it is the half that shows up every spring rather than once in year five.
Blades: the one job that genuinely matters
How to tell a blade is dull
- Grass tips look frayed and white rather than cleanly cut
- The lawn browns off at the tips a day or two after mowing
- The mower bogs in grass it used to handle
- Runtime is noticeably shorter than it was, on the same lawn
That last symptom is specific to battery mowers and worth knowing: a dull blade makes the motor work harder for the same cut, so the pack empties sooner. If your runtime has dropped, sharpen the blade before you conclude the battery is failing — the battery test is separate.
Sharpening safely
- Remove the battery first. There is no engine to have stopped and no fuel to run out. A cordless mower with a pack in it is live.
- Note the orientation before removing the blade. Marking the down-facing side with a marker saves a mistake that ruins a cut.
- Keep the original bevel angle. You are restoring an edge, not creating one. A file or a bench grinder both work.
- Balance the blade afterwards. Hang it on a nail through the center hole; if one end drops, take more metal off that end. An unbalanced blade vibrates and wears the spindle bearing.
- Do not sharpen to a razor edge. A fine edge on a blade hitting grit at 3,200 RPM chips immediately. A working edge lasts far longer.
Sharpen or replace?
Replace rather than sharpen when a blade is bent, cracked, deeply nicked, or has lost enough metal to be unbalanceable. Note that mowers with multi-blade systems — EGO's Select Cut ships three interchangeable lower blades — mean more blades to keep track of, and they should be maintained as a set.
Deck cleaning
Wet clippings pack under the deck, and packed clippings do three things: they reduce airflow so the deck cuts and bags worse, they hold moisture against the metal, and they add weight. Greenworks publishes 3,200 RPM blade speed — the deck relies on that airflow to lift grass before cutting it, and a caked deck undermines it.
- Remove the battery.
- Tip the mower on its side — check the manual for which side, since some have a preferred orientation.
- Scrape with a plastic or wooden tool rather than metal, which strips coating.
- Dry it before storage rather than leaving it wet.
Battery care: the one job you have added
Everything here follows from well-established lithium cell behavior rather than from any manufacturer claim, and the detail is in how long these batteries last.
- Do not store packs in a hot shed. Heat is the single largest controllable factor in how fast a pack ages. Indoors beats a metal roof in August.
- Store at roughly half charge for long idle periods, not full and not flat. Winter is when this matters.
- Let a hot pack cool before charging. Straight off the mower in July is the worst moment to push current in. Many chargers wait; the ones that do not, you should.
- Charge indoors at room temperature, not on a freezing garage floor.
- Do not deliberately run a pack flat to "recalibrate" it. That is nickel-cadmium advice and it is actively harmful to lithium cells.
The whole schedule

That is the entire list. Compared with a gas mower's spring service it is nothing, and it is one of the more underrated reasons people who switch do not switch back.

What they don't
- EGO publishes torque (7.0 ft-lbs), not motor wattage, so it cannot be compared directly against Greenworks' 1500W figure
- The 7.5Ah pack that earns the runtime claim is also the expensive one to replace
your yard is under a quarter acre. You would be paying for 420Wh of headroom you will never discharge, and a 20 in push mower cuts the same grass.

What they don't
- 320Wh included, the least of the three flagships -- and the 33-minute runtime claim reflects that
- 75 lb is the only published weight here, and it is not light
you want one battery to finish a half-acre without a swap. Greenworks rates the mower for 1/2 acre but claims only 33 minutes on the included pack; those two numbers only reconcile if you buy a second battery.

Toro labels the pack 60V Max 6.0Ah and publishes 324Wh. 324 / 6.0 = 54V -- the nominal voltage, not the 60V max-charge figure on the sticker. Every brand's 'max volts' is roughly 11% above nominal, so a nameplate watt-hour number is always about 11% optimistic. This is the single most useful spec on this page.
What the numbers favor
- Publishes a real watt-hour figure (324Wh) instead of leaving you to multiply the marketing voltage
- 45 minutes from 324Wh, against Greenworks' 33 minutes from a nameplate 320Wh
- 14-gauge steel deck, the only steel deck spec published on this page
- SmartStow vertical storage -- a genuine constraint solver in a one-car garage
What they don't
- 150-minute recharge is the slowest here by a wide margin
- Toro's 60V line is narrower than EGO's or Ryobi's, so the platform grows less far
you are buying into a platform rather than a mower. Toro builds excellent mowers; the 60V Flex-Force tool range is not the one to bet a decade of yard tools on.
