Corded or cordless: where a cord still wins
Cordless has taken most of the yard. Two jobs are still genuinely better on a cable, and the published runtime figures show exactly why.
Affiliate disclosure: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we rank first — here is how we're funded.

We have not tested these units. Every spec on this page comes from the manufacturer's own documentation and is linked to it. Every computed figure is arithmetic you can redo. Prices are checked daily — last verified January 1, 1970. Here is exactly how we pick.
Cordless has won the yard almost completely, and this site is largely about that. But two jobs are still genuinely better on a cable, and the reason is not power. It is a specification that nobody prints: duty cycle.
The short answer
Duty cycle is the hidden variable
Battery tools are excellent at intermittent work. You squeeze a trimmer trigger, release it, reposition, squeeze again. A pressure washer pump, by contrast, runs more or less continuously for as long as you are cleaning, and a dethatcher spins a 27-tine cylinder for every foot of a 12.6 inch pass across a whole lawn.
Those are the two jobs in our registry where the session is long enough that a pack becomes the limiting factor rather than an enabling one.
Pressure washing: the closest call
This one is genuinely arguable, and it is arguable in an unexpected direction. The cordless machine is the more powerful one.

From the Sun Joe SPX3000 and Greenworks 60V product pages, checked 3 September 2026. Cleaning units are our arithmetic.
Notice the Eco-mode row. At 2200 PSI and 1.0 GPM the cordless machine is producing 2,200 cleaning units, within 10% of the corded machine at full output. Detuned to save battery, the cordless washer is about as capable as the corded one flat out.
Which makes the decision almost purely geographic: if the job is inside about 55 feet of a socket, take unlimited runtime. If it is not, take the battery. The full head-to-head is in corded vs cordless pressure washer.

Dethatching: not really a call at all
The Sun Joe AJ801E is a 12 A corded machine with a 12.6 inch working width, two swappable cylinders, five published depth settings and an 8 gallon collection bag. It works the top 0.4 inches of the lawn — it is a dethatcher and scarifier, not an aerator, and the depth figures make that unambiguous.
What makes it a sensible corded tool is the combination of a narrow working width and a whole-lawn job. Nearly 80 passes on a modest lawn is a session measured in hours, at a steady draw, on ground that is by definition close to the house. There is nothing a pack adds to that except an interruption.

Where cordless has already won
| Tool | Why a cord loses | What cordless publishes |
|---|---|---|
| Mower | You walk the whole lawn; a cable is a hazard near a blade | 33 to 80 min per charge, ratings up to 1 acre |
| Blower | You cover the whole property, including the far end | Up to 150-180 min on low |
| String trimmer | Fence lines and boundaries are the furthest points from any socket | 30 to 67 published minutes |
| Chainsaw | A cable behind a running chain is a hazard | Up to 300 published cuts on a 4x4 |
| Pole saw | Overhead work with a trailing cable | Up to 70 published cuts |
| Riding mower | Self-evidently | Up to 2 published acres per charge |
Runtime and work figures from the manufacturers' own product pages cited throughout this site, checked 3 September 2026.
A three-question test
- Is the work continuous for more than about half an hour? If yes, a cord is worth considering. If it is stop-start, it is not.
- Does the job stay within about 55 feet of a socket? If not, the question is settled and the answer is cordless.
- Is there a spinning blade or chain involved? If yes, cordless, regardless of the other two answers.
Two yes answers and a no to the third is the corded case. In a typical yard that describes the pressure washer and the dethatcher, and that is genuinely the whole list.

What we cannot tell you
We have not run any of these tools. Nobody publishes a duty-cycle rating, a continuous-operation limit or a thermal derating figure for any of them, so the argument above is built on published runtimes and working widths rather than on measurements we made.
What the published figures do settle is the shape of it: a corded machine has no runtime figure because it does not need one, and a cordless machine has no radius limit because it does not have one. Match those two facts to your job.

2030 PSI rated with five nozzles and a 35 ft cord -- and no battery to size, because it does not have one.
Published specs
| Rated pressure | 2030 PSI (max) |
|---|---|
| Rated flow | 1.2 GPM (certified rated) |
| Motor | 13 A |
| Nozzles | 5 quick-connect (0/15/25/40/soap) |
| Detergent tanks | 2 x 0.9 L, removable |
| Hose / cord | 20 ft hose, 35 ft cord |
| Safety | Total Stop System trigger |
Source: Sun Joe SPX3000 Electric Pressure Washer, shopjoe.com
What the numbers favor
- Runs indefinitely -- no pack to discharge, no runtime figure to reconcile
- Five nozzles included rather than sold separately
- Two removable detergent tanks
- Total Stop System shuts the pump off between trigger pulls
What they don't
- Corded: a 35 ft cord plus an extension is the real working radius
- Sun Joe lists this model at both 13 A and 14.5 A across variants -- confirm the amperage on the exact SKU before buying
- Not on any battery platform, so it shares nothing with the rest of your yard kit
your working area is beyond easy reach of an outdoor outlet. A cordless washer trades runtime for the ability to walk away from the house.

Two swappable cylinders and five depth settings -- but read the depth numbers before you assume this aerates.
Published specs
| Motor | 12 A |
|---|---|
| Working width | 12.6 in |
| Depth settings | 5 |
| Raking depth | 0 to 0.4 in |
| Scarifying depth | -0.4 to 0 in |
| Speed | 2,990 RPM |
| Collection bag | 8 gal |
| Tines | 27-tine dethatching cylinder |
Source: Sun Joe AJ801E Electric Lawn Dethatcher + Scarifier, shopjoe.com
What the numbers favor
- Two cylinders in one machine -- dethatch and scarify without buying twice
- Five published depth settings with actual inch figures for each mode
- 8 gallon bag means fewer stops to rake up
- Corded, so no pack to size and no runtime limit
What they don't
- This is NOT an aerator. Maximum working depth is 0.4 in; core aeration needs 2-3 in
- 12.6 in working width makes a large lawn a long afternoon
- Corded, with the working-radius limit that implies
your problem is compacted soil rather than thatch. A 0.4 in scarifier cannot relieve compaction; you need a core aerator that pulls plugs.

#ad No verified live price right now, so we show none rather than a stale one. How we're funded.
3000 PSI and 2.0 GPM with no cord, and a published Eco mode that trades pressure for the runtime you actually need.
Published specs
| Max pressure | Up to 3000 PSI |
|---|---|
| Max flow | 2.0 GPM |
| Eco mode | 2200 PSI / 1.0 GPM |
| Runtime | Up to 30 min |
| Power | 60V battery (dual-battery kits available) |
Source: 60V 3000-PSI 2.0 GPM Electric Pressure Washer, greenworkstools.com
What the numbers favor
- Highest published pressure of the two washers here, by nearly 1000 PSI
- No cord -- works anywhere on the property
- Eco mode is published with real numbers (2200 PSI / 1.0 GPM), not just a label
- Shares the Greenworks 60V pack with the rest of that platform
What they don't
- 30 minutes of published runtime against a corded washer's unlimited
- Greenworks publishes several 60V washers at different pressures; check the SKU matches the PSI you are paying for
you wash a driveway twice a year within reach of an outlet. You would be buying 60V packs to solve a problem an extension cord already solves.

650 CFM in turbo with a genuine variable dial down to 225 CFM, and 64 dB published -- the useful range is the whole point.
Published specs
| Max air volume | 650 CFM (turbo) |
|---|---|
| Variable range | 225-470 CFM |
| Max air speed | Up to 180 MPH |
| Battery (kit) | 56V 5.0Ah |
| Runtime claim | Up to 90 min average |
| Noise | 64 dB |
| Warranty | 5-yr tool / 3-yr battery |
Source: POWER+ 650 CFM Blower, egopowerplus.com
56V x 5.0Ah = 280Wh, using EGO's advertised pack voltage.
What the numbers favor
- A real variable dial (225-470 CFM) plus turbo, not a three-position switch
- 64 dB published -- quieter than the 730 CFM Greenworks, which does not publish a figure at all
- IPX4 weather-resistant rating, published
- 5-year tool warranty
What they don't
- The 650 CFM headline is turbo-only; sustained work happens at 470 CFM or below
- EGO does not publish a weight for this model
your yard is a small courtyard or a deck. 650 CFM will move your mulch, your gravel and your neighbor's patience.
