What does it cost to charge a cordless yard kit?

The answer is smaller than almost anyone expects, and it falls straight out of watt-hours and one published electricity rate.

This is one of the few questions in the category with a genuinely small answer, and it is worth getting on the record precisely because so much marketing implies otherwise. Two published inputs, one multiplication.

The short answer

A 420Wh mower pack is 0.42 kilowatt-hours. The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes an average U.S. residential retail electricity price of 18.34 cents per kWh for June 2026. That works out at about 8 cents per full charge, before charger losses that nobody publishes.
This is an electricity cost, not a product price. We still do not print product prices anywhere on this site — those are checked live on the buy links with the date they were verified. The rate below is a published, dated national average from a government source, used as an input to arithmetic you can redo with your own tariff.

Cost per charge

The arithmetic — One full charge, each tool
Mower: 0.42 kWh x $0.1834 = about 8 cents
Blower: 0.28 kWh x $0.1834 = about 5 cents
Trimmer: 0.14 kWh x $0.1834 = about 3 cents
Zero turn (4 packs): 2.24 kWh x $0.1834 = about 41 cents

Charger losses add an amount nobody publishes.

Forty-one cents to cut up to two acres is the figure that tends to stop the conversation. It is also the one with the most uncertainty attached, because EGO's own published watt-hour figure for that configuration does not reconcile with 56V x 10.0Ah x 4 — so 2,240Wh is our arithmetic, shown, rather than their number.

A season, with the assumptions labeled

To get from a charge to a season you need a number of charges, and nobody publishes that because it depends entirely on your yard. Here is our assumption, stated plainly so you can replace it.

Assumption: thirty mows, twenty blower sessions and twenty-five trimmer sessions in a year, each consuming one full pack. That is our estimate of a moderately active suburban year, not a published figure, and it is the only invented number on this page.
The arithmetic — One year of a three-tool kit
Mower: 30 charges x 0.42 kWh = 12.6 kWh
Blower: 20 charges x 0.28 kWh = 5.6 kWh
Trimmer: 25 charges x 0.14 kWh = 3.5 kWh
Total: 21.7 kWh a year
21.7 x $0.1834 = about $3.98
Roughly four dollars of electricity for a year of yard work.

Even doubling every session count, or doubling it again for charger losses, keeps this in single-digit dollars. That is the point: running cost is not a variable in this purchase decision.

What actually costs money

If running cost is a rounding error, the real ownership costs are elsewhere, and they are the things this site spends most of its time on.

  • The packs. The battery is usually the most expensive replaceable component, which is why we tell you to read the battery warranty rather than the tool warranty — Greenworks publishes four years on its 80V packs and EGO three.
  • Buying into the wrong platform. Owning tools across two incompatible battery families means two pack inventories and two chargers. See what a platform costs over ten years.
  • Buying more watt-hours than your yard discharges. A 420Wh pack on a quarter-acre lawn is headroom you pay for and never use.
  • Buying too few. The opposite mistake, and worse: an undersized pack turns a one-session job into a two-session job forever.

Redo this with your own numbers

  1. Find your tariff in cents or pence per kilowatt-hour on your bill.
  2. Convert each pack to kilowatt-hours: volts x amp-hours, divided by 1,000.
  3. Multiply for the cost of one charge.
  4. Count your real sessions per year and multiply again.
  5. Add a margin for charger losses, which no manufacturer we cite publishes.

What we cannot tell you

We cannot tell you your charger's efficiency, because none of these manufacturers publishes one. We cannot tell you how many charges your yard needs, which is why that number is labeled as our assumption. And we will not give you a gas comparison, because fuel prices are local and move faster than any page can track.

What is solid: watt-hours divided by a thousand gives kilowatt-hours, the EIA publishes a dated national average, and the two multiplied together put a year of cordless yard work in the range of a few dollars.

What they don't

  • EGO publishes torque (7.0 ft-lbs), not motor wattage, so it cannot be compared directly against Greenworks' 1500W figure
  • The 7.5Ah pack that earns the runtime claim is also the expensive one to replace

56V x 10.0Ah = 560Wh per pack. Four packs = 2,240Wh; six bays filled = 3,360Wh. Against the published 2 acres on four packs, that is roughly 1,120Wh per acre -- the number to size any electric riding mower against.

What the numbers favor

  • Uses the identical 56V ARC Lithium packs as EGO's handheld tools -- the batteries are not stranded
  • Six battery bays, so range is a purchase decision rather than a fixed limit
  • 5-year warranty covering tool, battery AND charger
  • 32 published LED lights, which matters more than it sounds for dusk mowing

What they don't

  • Four 10.0Ah packs is a substantial share of the purchase price on its own
  • EGO's published watt-hour figure for this configuration does not reconcile with 56V x 10.0Ah x 4; we publish our own arithmetic (2,240Wh) and show the working rather than repeat a number we cannot verify

How much does it cost to charge an electric lawn mower?
A 56V 7.5Ah pack holds 420 watt-hours, which is 0.42 kilowatt-hours. At the U.S. Energy Information Administration's published national residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh for June 2026, that is about 8 cents of electricity per full charge, before charger losses.
What does a season of mowing cost in electricity?
At one full 420Wh charge per mow, thirty mows is 12.6 kWh. At the EIA's published average that is about $2.31 for the season. The thirty-mow figure is our assumption, stated as one; the watt-hours and the rate are published.
Is a battery mower cheaper to run than a gas one?
On energy, dramatically -- a full pack is a fraction of a kilowatt-hour. We do not publish a gas comparison because fuel prices are local and volatile, and any figure we typed here would be stale before you read it.
Does charging efficiency change these numbers?
Yes, upward, and we cannot tell you by how much. Our figures are energy into the pack. No manufacturer in our registry publishes a charger efficiency, so the true draw at the wall is higher by an amount nobody states.
How much does it cost to charge a riding mower?
The EGO Z6 carries four 56V 10.0Ah packs -- 2,240 watt-hours, or 2.24 kWh. At the EIA's published national average that is about 41 cents for a charge rated to cover up to two acres.
Should electricity cost affect which mower I buy?
No. The whole yard kit runs to a few dollars of electricity a season on these figures. Buy for watt-hours, platform range and battery warranty, and treat running cost as a rounding error.
