Best pressure washer for a home yard

PSI gets the headline. The number that actually predicts cleaning speed is PSI multiplied by flow.

Pressure washers are sold on PSI and bought on frustration when the PSI turns out not to be the whole story. The specification that predicts how fast you finish is the product of pressure and flow, and both manufacturers here publish it.

Cleaning units: PSI times GPM

Cleaning power is pressure multiplied by flow. PSI breaks the bond holding dirt to the surface; GPM carries the loosened dirt away. Multiply them and you get cleaning units, which predicts real-world cleaning speed far better than either number alone.
The arithmetic — The two washers, in cleaning units
Sun Joe SPX3000: 2030 PSI x 1.2 GPM = 2,436 cleaning units
Greenworks 60V: 3000 PSI x 2.0 GPM = 6,000 cleaning units
Greenworks 60V in Eco mode: 2200 x 1.0 = 2,200 cleaning units
The Greenworks at full output is about 2.5x the work rate
In Eco mode it is slightly BELOW the corded Sun Joe

That Eco-mode result is the useful one, and it is only visible because Greenworks publishes real numbers for the mode rather than just calling it Eco. Running the cordless washer in its economy setting to preserve battery puts it marginally behind a corded machine that never runs out. Worth knowing before you buy the cordless one to save time.

One honest caveat on the Sun Joe: its listings appear at both 13 A and 14.5 A across variants. Confirm the amperage and the exact rated PSI on the specific SKU before you buy, because "SPX3000" covers several configurations.

When cordless actually earns its limits

Pressure washing is unusual among yard tasks: you are already tethered to a hose. Adding a power cord to a job that already has a water line running to it is much less of an imposition than it would be on a mower or a blower.

So the cordless case is narrower here than elsewhere, and it comes down to distance from an outlet:

  • Cordless makes sense for fence lines at the property boundary, outbuildings without power, boats and trailers away from the house, and anywhere an extension cord would be a genuine trip hazard.
  • Corded makes sense for driveways, patios, siding and cars — the jobs most people buy a pressure washer for, all of which happen near the house and take longer than 30 minutes.

The platform angle

If you are already on Greenworks 60V, the cordless washer is a bare-tool purchase running on packs you own, which changes the arithmetic substantially. If you are not, buying into a fourth voltage line for one occasional tool is exactly the mistake the cost calculator is built to prevent.

Be careful here specifically: Greenworks runs 24V, 40V, 60V and 80V as separate, non-interchangeable platforms. A Greenworks 80V mower does not power a Greenworks 60V pressure washer.

Nozzles do more than pressure does

The Sun Joe ships five quick-connect nozzles: 0, 15, 25 and 40 degrees plus soap. That spread matters more than the difference between 2030 and 3000 PSI for most jobs, because the nozzle concentrates or spreads the same pressure across a different area.

NozzleUseCaution
0 degrees (red)Concentrated spot removalWill gouge wood and strip paint. Rarely the right choice.
15 degrees (yellow)Heavy concrete stainsStill aggressive on softer surfaces.
25 degrees (green)General driveway and patioThe default for most hard surfaces.
40 degrees (white)Siding, vehicles, painted surfacesThe safe starting point.
Soap (black)Low-pressure detergent applicationDetergent only draws at low pressure.

Nozzle colors and angles are an industry convention rather than a manufacturer specification. Always start with the widest angle and the greatest distance that works.

What a pressure washer will happily destroy

  • Softwood decking, which splinters and furs at surprisingly modest pressure
  • Mortar joints in older brickwork
  • Painted surfaces, especially with anything narrower than a 40-degree nozzle
  • Window seals, and siding when sprayed upward so water gets behind it
  • Lawn edges and planting beds, which erode fast under direct spray

The general rule is the opposite of instinct: start at the widest nozzle and the greatest distance, and only close in if that fails. Most damage happens on the first pass with the red nozzle fitted because the job looked stubborn.

What the numbers favor

  • Highest published pressure of the two washers here, by nearly 1000 PSI
  • No cord -- works anywhere on the property
  • Eco mode is published with real numbers (2200 PSI / 1.0 GPM), not just a label
  • Shares the Greenworks 60V pack with the rest of that platform

What they don't

  • 30 minutes of published runtime against a corded washer's unlimited
  • Greenworks publishes several 60V washers at different pressures; check the SKU matches the PSI you are paying for
Skip this one if

you wash a driveway twice a year within reach of an outlet. You would be buying 60V packs to solve a problem an extension cord already solves.

What the numbers favor

  • Runs indefinitely -- no pack to discharge, no runtime figure to reconcile
  • Five nozzles included rather than sold separately
  • Two removable detergent tanks
  • Total Stop System shuts the pump off between trigger pulls

What they don't

  • Corded: a 35 ft cord plus an extension is the real working radius
  • Sun Joe lists this model at both 13 A and 14.5 A across variants -- confirm the amperage on the exact SKU before buying
  • Not on any battery platform, so it shares nothing with the rest of your yard kit

Common questions

What is the best pressure washer for home use?
For most driveways and patios within reach of an outlet, the Sun Joe SPX3000: 2030 PSI, 1.2 GPM rated, five nozzles and unlimited runtime. If you need to work away from power, the Greenworks 60V delivers 3000 PSI and 2.0 GPM cordless, with about 30 minutes of published runtime.
Is PSI or GPM more important on a pressure washer?
Both, multiplied. Cleaning units are PSI times GPM, and that product predicts cleaning speed far better than PSI alone. A 3000 PSI, 2.0 GPM washer is 6,000 cleaning units against 2,436 for a 2030 PSI, 1.2 GPM one -- roughly 2.5 times the work rate.
How much PSI do I need for a driveway?
Around 2000 PSI handles most concrete and paving. Higher pressure cleans faster and is also more capable of damaging soft surfaces, so match the nozzle to the material rather than reaching for maximum pressure everywhere.
Is a cordless pressure washer worth it?
If your work is away from an outlet, yes. Otherwise it is buying a 30-minute runtime limit to solve a problem an extension cord already solves. Pressure washing is a task where a cord is genuinely less of an inconvenience than usual.
Can a pressure washer damage my property?
Easily. High pressure strips paint, splinters softwood decking, forces water behind siding and erodes mortar. Start with the widest nozzle and the greatest distance that works, and only step up if it does not.
