Spreader settings: how to calibrate instead of guessing
A setting number is meaningless without the spreader it was measured on. Weighing is the only honest method.

Every bag of lawn product prints a rate in pounds per 1,000 square feet, and every spreader has a dial numbered one to twenty with no units on it. Bridging those two is the whole job, and there is exactly one honest way to do it: weigh what comes out.
Why setting numbers do not transfer
A spreader setting controls a gate opening. The rate that gate produces depends on the machine's geometry, the rotor speed, how fast you walk and the size and density of the granule going through it. Two spreaders on "setting 5" with the same product will not apply the same amount, and the same spreader on setting 5 with two different products certainly will not.
If a product bag names your exact spreader model, that setting was measured on that machine and it is a good starting point. If it does not, you are reading someone else's machine's number, and calibrating takes less time than fixing a burnt lawn.
The calibration, step by step
- Measure a test strip. Mark out 1,000 sq ft — a 20 x 50 ft rectangle is easy to pace. Use a driveway or a low-value corner if you are calibrating with fertilizer.
- Weigh the loaded spreader, or weigh the product before you put it in. A bathroom scale is accurate enough for this.
- Pick a starting setting from the bag if it lists anything close, or from the middle of the range if it does not.
- Walk the strip at your normal pace, in the pattern you will actually use. Pace matters: a broadcast spreader meters off the wheels.
- Weigh what is left and subtract. That is your rate per 1,000 sq ft at that setting.
- Adjust and repeat once. If you applied 5 lb and wanted 4, drop the setting and re-run the strip.

Our arithmetic: area divided by spread width gives linear feet. The 6 ft figure is the published dual-rotor pattern of the Scotts Elite; the others are common widths shown for comparison.
A wider pattern is fewer passes and less time, and it is harder to keep off beds and hard surfaces. Hopper capacity is a stopping problem, not a strength one
The Scotts Elite publishes an 80 lb hopper and up to 20,000 sq ft of coverage per fill. On a 5,000 sq ft lawn at 4 lb per 1,000 that is 20 lb of product — a quarter of the hopper. You are not filling it; you are carrying a hopper big enough that you never stop mid-lawn to refill and create a seam.
The counterweight is that 80 lb loaded is genuinely heavy to push on soft ground or a slope. Load what the job needs rather than what the hopper takes.
The three mistakes that show up two weeks later
- Stripes. A single full-rate pass with any pattern overlap error shows as green bands. Half-rate cross-hatching is the fix, and it costs you one extra walk.
- Turning with the hopper open. Every turn at the end of a run applies a double dose in an arc. Close the gate before you turn.
- Product on hard surfaces. Anything on a path is runoff waiting for rain. Sweep it back onto the lawn, and use the edge guard on the pass beside the path.
Calibrating for seed is the same job with different numbers
Seed rates published by Penn State Extension run from 2-3 lb per 1,000 sq ft for Kentucky bluegrass to 6-8 for turf-type tall fescue, and seed is far lighter and smaller than fertilizer granules, so the setting will be different. Calibrate separately for each product rather than assuming one dial position covers both.

Two worked examples
Fertilizer at 3 lb per 1,000 sq ft on a 6,000 sq ft lawn
Seed at 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft on the same lawn
Same lawn, same spreader, completely different setting. Seed is lighter and smaller than fertilizer granules, so the gate opening that delivered 3 lb of fertilizer will not deliver 5 lb of ryegrass. Recalibrate: weigh 30 lb of seed in, run the 1,000 sq ft test strip, weigh out.
The reason to bother is that over-seeding wastes money and under-seeding leaves a patchy result you cannot fix until next autumn. Published rates and the seeding window are on the overseeding guide.
After the job
- Empty the hopper completely. Fertilizer left in a spreader absorbs moisture, cakes and corrodes the metal parts around it.
- Rinse and dry before storing. Especially after fertilizer or ice melt.
- Note the setting you calibrated to, on the spreader itself, per product. Next season you will not remember it, and the calibration is only worth doing once per product.
What we cannot tell you
- The setting number for your machine and product. That is the entire point of this page: nobody can, including the bag, unless it names your exact spreader.
- How pattern uniformity varies across the width. Broadcast spreaders do not apply evenly across the whole arc, and no consumer manufacturer publishes a distribution curve.
- Rates for products we cannot cite. Follow the label on the bag; it is a legal document as well as an instruction.

5,000 sq ft at a 6 ft spread width needs about 833 linear feet of walking. On a 60 ft run that is roughly 14 passes -- versus 17 passes at a standard 5 ft width. That is the whole practical difference the dual rotor buys.
What the numbers favor
- 6 ft pattern against the 5 ft standard -- about 20% fewer passes
- 80 lb hopper covers 20,000 sq ft without a refill
- EdgeGuard keeps fertilizer off hard surfaces, which is where runoff starts
- Foam-filled tires cannot go flat in the shed over winter
What they don't
- 80 lb loaded is heavy to push on soft or sloped ground
- Broadcast spreaders are harder to control near beds than a drop spreader
your lawn is under about 2,000 sq ft or heavily bordered by beds. A drop spreader puts product exactly where you steer it and nowhere else.

What they don't
- This is NOT an aerator. Maximum working depth is 0.4 in; core aeration needs 2-3 in
- 12.6 in working width makes a large lawn a long afternoon
- Corded, with the working-radius limit that implies
your problem is compacted soil rather than thatch. A 0.4 in scarifier cannot relieve compaction; you need a core aerator that pulls plugs.
