Best battery mower for mulching leaves

The best leaf tool most people already own is the mower in the shed. Extension research is unusually clear on this, and it comes with one number attached: about half an inch. Everything on this page follows from that figure and from what each deck publishes about how it handles material.

The half-inch rule

That is a stronger endorsement than most lawn advice ever earns, and it reframes the autumn job completely: the goal is not to remove leaves, it is to get the layer down to half an inch and then shred what is left where it lies.

What to look for in the deck

There is no such thing as a "leaf mower". What matters is what the deck is rated to do with material, and only some brands publish it.

The pick: Greenworks LM2108S

It is the only machine here whose published deck description names a leaf mode at all. Turbo leaf pickup sits alongside mulch, bag and side discharge on a 4-in-1 deck, and Greenworks publishes a 3200 RPM blade speed where EGO and Toro publish nothing. Blade speed is the mechanism by which leaves get shredded rather than shoved, so a published figure is worth having.

The cost is runtime. At 320Wh and a published 33 minutes the LM2108S works out at about 9.7 watt-hours a minute, the highest draw of any mower we hold specs for — and leaf work is heavier than grass work, so budget below the claim rather than at it.

The alternative: EGO LM2135SP

EGO's answer is different in kind. Rather than a mode selector it ships three interchangeable lower blades, one of them a high-lift bagging blade. High lift is exactly what you want when the layer is past half an inch and you have decided to collect rather than shred. It also has the most cut-height positions here, eight from one to four inches, which matters because leaf mulching goes better a notch higher than your normal cut.

On energy it is the more comfortable machine for a long autumn session: 420Wh at about 7.0 watt-hours a minute, against the Greenworks at 320Wh and 9.7.

The small-lot option: Greenworks LM2054

A 20 inch 4-in-1 deck at 57.5 lb, rated to a third of an acre. It shares the 3200 RPM blade speed of its 80V sibling and is by far the most frugal machine here at about 4.0 watt-hours a minute. The limitation is the cut height ceiling of 3.6 inches, which is at the low end of what University of Minnesota Extension recommends for a residential lawn and leaves you less room to raise the deck for leaf work.

The method, in order

1. Wait for a dry day. Penn State is explicit that mowing leaves works best when they are relatively dry. Wet leaves clump under the deck and raise the motor draw.
2. Check the depth. At or under about half an inch, mulch. Deeper than that, blow or rake the excess off first and mulch what remains.
3. Raise the deck a notch. You are cutting grass and processing leaves at the same time, and the one-third rule still applies to the grass.
4. Make the first pass in your normal direction. Do not slow down to a crawl; blade speed does the shredding.
5. Make the second pass at right angles. This is Penn State's own instruction and it is what turns leaf fragments into leaf dust.
6. Stop when you can see grass through the shredded layer. If you cannot, there was more than half an inch and some of it needs to come off.

Where the blower fits

On any lot with beds, paths and a driveway, the efficient sequence is blower first, mower second: move the excess onto the lawn in a manageable layer, then mulch it in. That is the reverse of how most people do it, and it is the order we set out in the leaf cleanup guide.

What we cannot tell you

We have not tested any of these decks on leaves. How well turbo leaf pickup actually performs against a plain mulching deck, how many passes a given leaf type needs, and what the real runtime penalty of leaf work is on each machine are all things neither the spec sheets nor the extension research settle.

What is settled is the half-inch layer, the cross pass, and the finding that mulched leaves did not harm the turf in the research Penn State cites. That is enough to stop raking.
