Mulching vs bagging: which should you actually do?
Extension research says returning clippings is worth about one fertilizer application a year. Here is when bagging still wins.

This is the one lawn argument with a genuine research answer, and the answer is not the one the bag attachment implies. Returning clippings feeds the lawn; bagging them removes that nutrient and gives you something to dispose of. There are still three situations where bagging is right, and they are worth knowing precisely.
What the extension research actually says
Minnesota Extension's mowing guidance is direct: decomposed clippings add the equivalent of one fertilizer application to your lawn each year, and clippings should be left on the lawn to improve soil quality unless they are excessively long or the lawn has received a herbicide treatment.
The same guidance sets the condition that makes mulching work: remove no more than one third of the leaf tissue per mow. To maintain a 3-inch lawn, that means mowing before it reaches 4.5 inches. Clippings cut at that ratio are short enough to fall through the canopy and decompose; clippings from an overgrown lawn sit on top in mats, which is the situation everyone remembers when they decide mulching does not work.
The three times bagging is the right call
- The grass got away from you. If you are taking off more than a third of the blade, the clippings will mat. Bag that cut, or mulch it with a second pass, then get back onto a schedule.
- You have applied a herbicide. Minnesota Extension specifically flags herbicide-treated lawns as a case for removing clippings.
- You want the material. Clippings are a nitrogen-rich green for a compost heap. Taking them for that reason is a choice about the compost, not about the lawn.
Notice that "the lawn looks tidier" is not on the list. It is a real preference and nobody should be told it is wrong — it is just not an agronomic argument, and it costs you the fertilizer equivalent above.
What each mode costs you in battery
Here is where we have to be honest about a gap. Mulching recuts clippings inside the deck until they are small enough to fall through the canopy; side discharge throws them out on the first pass; bagging adds the weight of collected material and the airflow needed to move it. Those are three different loads on the motor, and no manufacturer publishes a runtime figure per deck mode.
What we can say from the published runtime claims is how little headroom there is to lose. The Greenworks 80V flagship claims 33 minutes on 320Wh; the Toro claims 45 minutes on a published 324Wh. If your lawn already runs close to the pack limit, the deck mode is one of the few variables you control, and side discharge is the lightest of the three.

The mowers that do both properly

EGO LM2135SP: three interchangeable lower blades
EGO takes a different route: a mulching blade, a high-lift blade for bagging, and an extended-runtime blade, all interchangeable on the same deck. That is more faff than flicking a lever, and it is a genuinely better bagging result, because a high-lift blade is designed to move material rather than recut it.

Toro 21356: the Recycler deck
Toro's Recycler deck is built around mulching, on a 14-gauge steel body with a published 324Wh pack behind it. If you have read the extension research and decided you are a mulcher, buying a deck designed for it rather than a deck with a mulch plug is the more coherent purchase.

Leaves are the same question in October
Penn State Extension puts a number on it: a leaf layer up to about one-half inch in depth is beneficial to the lawn. Mow slowly to give the blades time to chop, and go over the area a second time at right angles if the shred is not fine enough. Start before every leaf has fallen rather than waiting for one enormous pass.

- How well each deck mulches. Clipping size is a deck-design outcome that only shows on real grass.
- Bag capacity in useful terms. None of these three pages publishes a collector volume.

- EGO publishes torque (7.0 ft-lbs), not motor wattage, so it cannot be compared directly against Greenworks' 1500W figure
- The 7.5Ah pack that earns the runtime claim is also the expensive one to replace
your yard is under a quarter acre. You would be paying for 420Wh of headroom you will never discharge, and a 20 in push mower cuts the same grass.

- 320Wh included, the least of the three flagships -- and the 33-minute runtime claim reflects that
- 75 lb is the only published weight here, and it is not light
you want one battery to finish a half-acre without a swap. Greenworks rates the mower for 1/2 acre but claims only 33 minutes on the included pack; those two numbers only reconcile if you buy a second battery.

Toro labels the pack 60V Max 6.0Ah and publishes 324Wh. 324 / 6.0 = 54V -- the nominal voltage, not the 60V max-charge figure on the sticker. Every brand's 'max volts' is roughly 11% above nominal, so a nameplate watt-hour number is always about 11% optimistic. This is the single most useful spec on this page.
What the numbers favor
- Publishes a real watt-hour figure (324Wh) instead of leaving you to multiply the marketing voltage
- 45 minutes from 324Wh, against Greenworks' 33 minutes from a nameplate 320Wh
- 14-gauge steel deck, the only steel deck spec published on this page
- SmartStow vertical storage -- a genuine constraint solver in a one-car garage
What they don't
- 150-minute recharge is the slowest here by a wide margin
- Toro's 60V line is narrower than EGO's or Ryobi's, so the platform grows less far
you are buying into a platform rather than a mower. Toro builds excellent mowers; the 60V Flex-Force tool range is not the one to bet a decade of yard tools on.
