Best mower for bermuda grass

Bermudagrass is the one common lawn grass where the mower's lowest setting is a buying decision rather than a detail. Extension guidance puts it at 1 to 2 inches, and a surprising number of cordless mowers cannot physically get there — which you can check before buying, because the good ones publish the range.

What extension guidance actually says

Clemson's bermudagrass maintenance factsheet gives a range of 1 to 2 inches, recommends starting at "1¼ to 1½ inches" and adjusting from there based on how the lawn looks, and notes that cultivars adapted to partial shade may do better at 2 inches. It is also direct about the equipment limit: "Mowing heights below 1 inch will require a reel type mower to achieve satisfactory results."

That single sentence draws the boundary of this page. Below an inch, no rotary mower — cordless or otherwise — is the right tool. Between one and two inches, the question is simply whether the deck adjusts that low, and three of the mowers in our registry publish an answer.

Published cut heights against the target band

1. EGO LM2135SP — the only one that reaches a full inch

One to four inches across eight positions, a 21 inch deck, up to 7.0 ft-lbs of cutting torque, a 56V 7.5Ah pack (420Wh) and a published self-propel range of 0.9 to 3.1 mph.

The eight positions matter as much as the floor. Bermudagrass is usually managed by nudging the height rather than setting it once — down in early summer as growth accelerates, up in heat or drought, which Clemson recommends explicitly. Eight steps across three inches is a finer ladder than seven steps across 2.4 or 2.6.

Its variable drive speed is the second bermudagrass-specific advantage: dense warm-season turf loads a deck more than thin fescue does, and the ability to slow down is what keeps the cut clean instead of ragged.

2. Greenworks LM2054 — lightest, and inside the band

A 20 inch deck, 1.2 to 3.6 inches over seven positions, 3200 RPM blade speed, 57.5 lb, a 40V 4.0Ah pack (160Wh) and up to 40 minutes of claimed runtime on up to a third of an acre.

A 1.2 inch floor sits comfortably inside Clemson's 1 to 2 inch range and just below their suggested 1.25 inch starting point, which makes this a genuinely usable bermudagrass mower for a small lawn.

It is a push mower, and 57.5 lb is the lightest in our registry — which is the right shape for a small, flat, densely-turfed lawn. On 160Wh, a third of an acre is a claim to treat with the usual caution about dense grass.

3. Greenworks LM2108S — capable, but the floor is high

Twenty-one inches, 1.38 to 4.0 inches over seven positions, 3200 RPM, a 4-in-1 deck, 80V 4.0Ah (320Wh), 75 lb, and a four-year warranty on both tool and battery — the longest of the three.

The honest problem for this specific job is the 1.38 inch floor. That is inside Clemson's 1 to 2 inch range, but it lands at the top of their recommended 1.25 to 1.5 inch starting band, so you have no room to go lower if the lawn wants it.

Where it earns a place is on a larger bermudagrass lawn managed at the upper end of the range, or on a mixed property with shade-adapted cultivars that Clemson notes may perform better at 2 inches.

Cutting low means cutting often

The lower you mow, the less leaf there is to remove before you break the one-third rule — never take more than about a third of the blade in a single cut. Here is what that does to your schedule.

The blade is half the job

Clemson's factsheet recommends a sharp blade and a mulching-type mower, with sharpening roughly monthly through the growing season. Bermudagrass is a tough, wiry grass and a dull blade tears rather than cuts, leaving whitened, frayed tips that give a low-cut lawn a gray cast within a day. Who should skip all three

• Anyone maintaining below 1 inch. Clemson is explicit: that is reel mower territory, and no rotary mower on this page changes it.
• Cool-season lawns. Kentucky bluegrass, fescues and ryegrass are cut far higher — see grass types guide.
• Very uneven ground. Low cut heights on undulating soil scalp. Fix the contour, or mow higher and accept it.

What we cannot tell you
