Push, self-propelled, riding or robot: which class of mower fits your lot

Four machines, four completely different jobs. Pick the class wrong and no amount of model research rescues the purchase.

We have not tested these units. Every spec on this page comes from the manufacturer's own documentation and is linked to it. Every computed figure is arithmetic you can redo. Prices are checked daily — last verified January 1, 1970. Here is exactly how we pick.

Most mower research starts with brands and ends in confusion, because the brand question is the third question. The first is which class of machine your lot needs — and unusually for this category, the manufacturers publish enough to answer it without anybody guessing.

The short answer

Use the published acreage ratings as the class boundary. Push mowers stop at about a third of an acre. Self-propelled walk-behinds are rated from half an acre to a full acre depending on how much energy is on board. Riders start where walk-behinds run out, around an acre. Robots are an eighth of an acre and 16 degrees of slope, and they are a scheduling decision rather than a mowing one.

The published ratings, in one table

Three of these figures come straight from manufacturers who are willing to print them. Two brands print no acreage rating at all, which is its own information.

The gaps are as useful as the numbers. Two of the three brands selling premium 21 inch self-propelled mowers decline to state an acreage, which is a fair admission that coverage depends on grass, terrain and how fast you walk. It also means that when a brand does print a figure, it has committed to something.

Push: under a third of an acre, flat

A push mower is the only class where less machine is genuinely better. The Greenworks LM2054 is 57.5 lb, the lightest published weight of any mower we hold specs for, and it is the most energy-frugal by a wide margin.

The catch is published in the same breath: a third of an acre, and a 1.2 to 3.6 inch cut-height range whose ceiling sits below the three inches or higher that University of Minnesota Extension recommends for a typical residential lawn. If you want to mow high, check the top of the range before you check anything else.

Self-propelled: a third of an acre to an acre, or any hill

Self-propel is not really a size feature. It is a weight-and-slope feature. Every machine in this class that publishes a weight is between 66 and 75 lb, and a drive motor is what makes that number tolerable going uphill with a full grass bag.

Within the class, how far you get on one charge is set by energy on board rather than anything about the deck. Kobalt reaches an acre by carrying 640Wh in two bays; Greenworks reaches half an acre on 320Wh. Those two ratings agree on roughly 640 watt-hours per acre, which is the most useful sizing rule in this whole category.

Riding: an acre and up

The EGO Z6 publishes up to two acres per charge on four 56V 10.0Ah packs. That is 2,240 nameplate watt-hours installed, and it puts the same 640Wh-per-acre rule within reach: two acres at that rate would be 1,280Wh, so the machine is carrying substantial headroom for a 42 inch deck working harder than a walk-behind.

That is the honest trade for the class: a rider is not efficient, it is fast. The time arithmetic is worked through in how long it takes to mow an acre.

Robot: an eighth of an acre and 16 degrees

A robot mower does not cut faster. It cuts more often, with a 7.1 inch swath, and the specification that decides whether that works is the duty cycle.

What we cannot tell you

We have not run any of these machines. Acreage ratings are manufacturer claims under conditions none of them publish, and thick spring growth, wet grass and a lot broken up by beds and trees all cost coverage that a rating on a flat test field does not capture.

What the ratings do give you is a class boundary that somebody has committed to in print. Start there, then argue with it based on your own ground.

What the numbers favor

  • Six battery bays, so range is a purchase decision rather than a fixed limit

  • Four 10.0Ah packs is a substantial share of the purchase price on its own
  • EGO's published watt-hour figure for this configuration does not reconcile with 56V x 10.0Ah x 4; we publish our own arithmetic (2,240Wh) and show the working rather than repeat a number we cannot verify

your lot is under an acre. A 21 in walk-behind finishes a half acre in the time it takes to get a zero turn out of the shed, and costs a fifth as much.

Common questions

What type of lawn mower do I need?
Match the class to published acreage ratings. Under a third of an acre and flat: a push mower, like the 57.5 lb Greenworks LM2054 rated to 1/3 acre. A third to an acre, or any slope: self-propelled. Over an acre: a rider such as the EGO Z6, rated to 2 acres. Under an eighth of an acre with slopes below 16 degrees: a robot is a real option.
At what lawn size should I stop pushing?
The manufacturers answer this for you. Greenworks rates its 20 in push mower to 1/3 acre and its 21 in self-propelled 80V to 1/2 acre; Kobalt rates its dual-battery self-propelled to 1 acre. A third of an acre is where the published push-mower ratings stop.
Are robot mowers only for small lawns?
The wire-free model we hold specs for is rated to about an eighth of an acre with a 7.1 in cutting width and a published 16 degree maximum slope. Those are hard published limits. Robot mowers scale by running more often rather than cutting faster, so the duty cycle matters as much as the coverage rating.
Do I need self-propelled for a small lawn?
Not for size, possibly for slope or weight. A self-propel drive is what makes a 66 to 75 lb machine tolerable uphill. On flat ground under a third of an acre, a 57.5 lb push mower is lighter, cheaper to run and uses about 4.0 watt-hours a minute against 7.0 for a self-propelled flagship.
Is a riding mower worth it under an acre?
Rarely. A 21 in walk-behind finishes half an acre in the time it takes to get a rider out of the shed, and the rider costs several times as much. The EGO Z6's own published coverage is up to 2 acres per charge -- that is the size of lot the machine is built for.
Can one mower cover every situation?
No, and the slope figures are why. The only published gradient limit we found from any mower manufacturer of any type is Segway's 16 degrees for the Navimow. Nobody else publishes one, so on real slopes the drive type and your own footing decide it, not a spec.
