An acre is the one lot size where this category genuinely forks. Below it, buy a walk-behind. Above it, buy a rider. At exactly an acre both are defensible, and the published figures make the trade unusually clear.

The short answer

Kobalt's dual-bay walk-behind is the only walk-behind we hold specs for with a published one-acre rating: 640Wh installed across two 80V bays, 80 published minutes, seven drive speeds. The EGO Z6 covers the same acre in about a third of the cutting time on a 42 inch deck. Choose on time, obstacles and storage, not on capability.

The energy an acre takes

Two brands independently arrive at the same figure for a 21 inch walk-behind, which is the most reliable sizing rule we have found in this category.

The arithmetic — Watt-hours per acre, from published ratings
Greenworks LM2108S: 320Wh rated to 1/2 acre
320 / 0.5 = 640Wh per acre
Kobalt dual bay: 640Wh rated to 1 acre
640 / 1 = 640Wh per acre
EGO Z6 rider: 2,240Wh rated to 2 acres
2,240 / 2 = about 1,120Wh per acre
A rider spends roughly 75% more energy for the same ground.

That is the honest cost of the class. What it buys back is time, and on an acre the time difference is large enough to be the whole decision for some households and irrelevant for others.

From the Lowe's product listing, checked 3 September 2026.

Both packs are installed rather than one being a spare, so the 80 minutes is uninterrupted. That distinction matters more than it sounds on a lot this size, because the alternative on other platforms is a walk back to the garage mid-lawn.

The honest costs: no published weight, cut height or warranty, and single-retailer supply. And 80 minutes of walking is a real afternoon.

2. EGO Z6 ZT4204L — the same acre in a third of the time

A 42 inch deck, 2,240 nameplate watt-hours across four 56V 10.0Ah packs, six bays available for up to 3,360Wh, 8 MPH top speed, 32 published LED lights and a five-year warranty covering tool, battery and charger.

The arithmetic — Cutting time, one acre
21 in deck at 2.5 MPH, 10% overlap: about 126 minutes
42 in deck at 4 MPH, 10% overlap: about 39 minutes
Roughly a 3.2x difference, on open ground.
Speeds and overlap are our stated assumptions;
deck widths are published.

At an acre the Z6 is working at about half its published coverage, which means the spare bays and the headroom are genuinely spare. The full arithmetic is in how long it takes to mow an acre.

3. EGO LM2135SP — when most of the acre is not lawn

Plenty of one-acre lots are a mown half-acre plus paddock, orchard or rough ground. Buying a 42 inch rider for that is buying a lot of machine for a small job.

The LM2135SP publishes 420Wh, 60 minutes, the widest cut-height range in our registry at 1 to 4 inches over eight positions, and a five-year tool warranty. It also runs the same 56V packs as the Z6, so if the lot later demands a rider nothing you own is stranded.

How to actually decide

If this is true of your acreLean toward
Open, few obstacles, long runsRider. Deck width pays off fully.
Broken up by trees, beds and play equipmentWalk-behind. A 42 in deck loses its advantage.
Storage is a shed or a single garage bayWalk-behind. A rider lives somewhere for 51 weeks a year.
Access is through a standard side gateWalk-behind. A zero turn generally will not fit.
Only part of it is mown lawnWalk-behind, and a trimmer for the rest.
You expect the lot to feel bigger over ten yearsRider. Buying twice is the expensive route.
There is any real slopeNeither spec sheet publishes a slope limit. Judge the ground.

Storage and gate access are not published by any manufacturer, and they decide more purchases at this lot size than any figure that is.

Extension mowing-safety guidance is worth repeating for an acre with any gradient: mow across a slope rather than up and down, because good footing matters, and steep slopes are both difficult and dangerous to mow. No manufacturer of any mower in our registry publishes a maximum slope except Segway, for a robot.

What we cannot tell you

We have driven and pushed none of these. Coverage ratings are manufacturer claims under unstated conditions, and an acre broken up by obstacles is not an acre of test field. Nobody publishes what trees, beds and turns cost in coverage or time.

What is published: one walk-behind rated to a full acre, a rider rated to two, about 640 watt-hours per acre on foot and about 1,120 on a seat, and a roughly threefold difference in cutting time.

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
640Wh installed (2 x 320Wh)

80V x 4.0Ah = 320Wh per pack; two bays = 640Wh installed. Kobalt's listing does not state whether the two ports discharge simultaneously or in sequence, so we do not claim either -- what is verifiable is that 640Wh is on the machine when you start.

What the numbers favor

  • 640Wh installed across two bays, the most of any walk-behind on this page
  • Rated to 1 acre, twice the Greenworks 80V flagship's half-acre rating
  • Seven published speed settings on the self-propel drive
  • All Kobalt 80V packs are cross-compatible across the 80V outdoor line

What they don't

  • Sold through Lowe's only, so availability and price track one retailer
  • The listing does not publish weight, cut-height range or a noise figure
  • Kobalt's 80V outdoor range is narrower than EGO's or Ryobi's

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
2,240Wh installed, 3,360Wh at full bays

56V x 10.0Ah = 560Wh per pack. Four packs = 2,240Wh; six bays filled = 3,360Wh. Against the published 2 acres on four packs, that is roughly 1,120Wh per acre -- the number to size any electric riding mower against.

What the numbers favor

  • Uses the identical 56V ARC Lithium packs as EGO's handheld tools -- the batteries are not stranded
  • Six battery bays, so range is a purchase decision rather than a fixed limit
  • 5-year warranty covering tool, battery AND charger
  • 32 published LED lights, which matters more than it sounds for dusk mowing

What they don't

  • Four 10.0Ah packs is a substantial share of the purchase price on its own
  • EGO's published watt-hour figure for this configuration does not reconcile with 56V x 10.0Ah x 4; we publish our own arithmetic (2,240Wh) and show the working rather than repeat a number we cannot verify

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
420Wh

56V x 7.5Ah = 420Wh, using EGO's advertised pack voltage.

What the numbers favor

  • 420Wh in the box -- the largest included pack of any flagship walk-behind on this page
  • Eight cut-height positions from 1 to 4 in, the widest published range here
  • Three interchangeable lower blades (mulching, high-lift bagging, extended runtime)
  • 5-year tool warranty, the longest published on this page

What they don't

  • EGO publishes torque (7.0 ft-lbs), not motor wattage, so it cannot be compared directly against Greenworks' 1500W figure
  • The 7.5Ah pack that earns the runtime claim is also the expensive one to replace

Common questions

What is the best electric mower for one acre?
Two defensible answers. The Kobalt 80V dual-bay walk-behind is the only walk-behind we hold specs for with a published one-acre rating, on 640Wh installed. The EGO Z6 zero turn covers the same acre in roughly a third of the time on a 42 inch deck.
Can a walk-behind mower really do an acre?
Kobalt publishes up to 1 acre for its dual-bay machine and backs it with 640 watt-hours installed and 80 published minutes. The energy adds up -- walk-behind ratings across two brands both imply about 640 watt-hours per acre.
How long does an acre take on a walk-behind?
About 126 minutes of cutting on a 21 in deck at a 2.5 MPH walking pace with a 10% overlap allowance -- our arithmetic, with the pace and overlap stated as assumptions. A 42 inch rider at 4 MPH works out at about 39 minutes.
How much battery does an acre need?
On walk-behind ratings, about 640 watt-hours. On a rider it is more: the EGO Z6 carries 2,240Wh for a published two acres, which works out at about 1,120Wh per acre. Speed costs energy.
Is a rider worth it for exactly one acre?
It depends on what your time is worth and what else the lot needs. At an acre a walk-behind still finishes in one session with the right machine; at two acres it does not. If the lot is likely to feel bigger over the next decade, buy the rider.
What if my acre is broken up by trees and beds?
That pushes toward the walk-behind. A 42 inch deck loses much of its advantage on a lot full of obstacles, and the trimming afterwards is the same either way. Nobody publishes a figure for what obstacles cost.
