Pressure washer roundups rank PSI, and for concrete that is defensible. Point the same machine at a car and the ranking inverts completely: what you want is the machine that can be made to work most gently, with the most control over how it delivers what it produces.

The second advantage is specific to washing a car: no mains cord. CPSC's standing pressure washer warning is that consumers could receive a fatal electrical shock if the power cord connections become wet or an internal short exists, and that at least eight such fatalities had been reported to the Commission. A car wash puts a person, a metal vehicle, standing water and a cord in the same place. A battery machine removes one of those four.

2. Sun Joe SPX3000 — the one with the right accessories

Everything Greenworks leaves unpublished, Sun Joe publishes. Five quick-connect nozzles at 0, 15, 25 and 40 degrees plus a soap tip — and the 40 degree tip is the one you will use on every panel. Two removable 0.9 L detergent tanks, which is the stage of the job that does the actual cleaning. A Total Stop System that shuts the pump off between trigger pulls.

It also has no runtime limit at all, which means you can take your time over the dwell and the contact wash without watching a battery.

The cons are the cord and the reach: a published 35 ft cord and 20 ft hose is about 55 feet from a socket in a straight line, and CPSC's grounding guidance applies directly — three-wire grounded plug into a properly grounded receptacle, no cut or spliced cords, grounding prong intact, insulating footwear, and never allow children to operate it.

The settings to use, whichever you buy

1. Widest nozzle you own. 40 degrees on the Sun Joe set. Never 0 or 15 on paintwork.
2. Reduced mode where the machine has one. Eco on the Greenworks.
3. Real standoff distance. Distance and nozzle angle do the same job; distance is the one you can change mid-stroke.
4. Soap tip, bottom up, then let it dwell. The chemistry cleans; the machine rinses.
5. Keep the wand moving and never point at an edge — seals, badges, lifted trim and chipped paint are where water gets underneath.

The step after washing

Air-drying a car in a hard water area undoes the wash. A blower moves water out of trim gaps, mirror housings and grille slats that a towel cannot reach, and it does it without touching the paint — which is the part that puts swirl marks in it.
