How long will a cordless leaf blower actually run?

The number on the box is an average. The number that matters is what turbo costs you per minute, and one manufacturer publishes enough to work it out.

We have not tested these units. Every spec on this page comes from the manufacturer's own documentation and is linked to it. Every computed figure is arithmetic you can redo. Prices are checked daily — last verified January 1, 1970. Here is exactly how we pick.

Ask how long a cordless blower runs and every manufacturer gives you a different kind of answer: one publishes an average, one publishes high and low, one publishes three modes, and one publishes a single figure for low only. Convert them all to the same unit and the category stops being confusing.

The short answer

Turbo costs roughly ten times what low costs, per minute. EGO publishes 15 minutes of turbo and 150 minutes of low for the LB7650 on the same 5.0Ah pack. That is 280Wh divided two ways: about 18.7 watt-hours a minute flat out, about 1.9 on low. Every runtime question in this category is really a mode question.

The turbo tax, from the one tool that publishes both ends

Almost nobody publishes the two numbers you need side by side. EGO does for the LB7650, and it is the most useful pair of figures in the blower category.

That ratio reframes the whole purchase. A bigger battery does not fix a turbo habit; it funds it for slightly longer. What fixes it is working at the bottom of the variable range and reaching for turbo only when material genuinely will not move.

Three things that table tells you

1. Turbo costs the same whatever you strap it to

The LB7650 handheld burns 18.7 watt-hours a minute on turbo. The LB6000 backpack burns 18.3. Those are two different tools, two different pack sizes and two different form factors landing within 2% of each other.

A backpack blower does not buy you efficiency. It buys you comfort and a bigger pack. The energy cost of moving a given volume of air at a given speed is set by physics, not by where the battery sits.

2. An "average" runtime is a different kind of number

EGO publishes "up to 90 min average" for the LB6504, which computes to about 3.1 watt-hours a minute. That is honest as far as it goes — it lands between the low and high figures its sibling publishes — but it cannot tell you how long you have at full output, which is exactly the question you have when you are standing in front of a wet pile.

3. Low mode varies less than you would expect

Across four blowers from three brands, the low-mode figures cluster between 1.9 and 3.3 watt-hours a minute. That is a narrow band for tools ranging from 600 to 765 CFM, and it means low-mode runtime is mostly a question of how big a pack you bought.

What to do with this

  1. Work from the bottom of the dial. A real variable control, like the LB7650's 260-580 CFM range, exists so you can stay off turbo.
  2. Treat turbo as a burst tool. Two seconds on a stuck patch, not a mode you leave selected across a driveway.
  3. Size the pack from your session, not the box. Multiply your low minutes by about 2, your turbo minutes by about 18, and add.
  4. Prefer tools that publish both ends. A brand willing to print 15 minutes next to 150 is telling you something a 90-minute average never will.
  5. Check the recharge, not just the runtime. Greenworks publishes a 40-minute recharge on its 80V blower pack, which changes what a 60-minute low runtime means in a long afternoon.

What we cannot tell you

Every figure above is a manufacturer claim measured under conditions none of them publish, and the modes are not standardized: one brand's "high" is not necessarily another's. We have not run any of these tools, and we have no data on how the numbers change in cold weather or as a pack ages.

What survives all of that is the ratio. Ten to one between turbo and low, from the only manufacturer that publishes both. That is the number to carry around.

7 dB quieter than EGO's 64 dB

Decibels are logarithmic: a 7 dB drop is roughly a 5x reduction in sound intensity, and is perceived as roughly half as loud. Both figures are manufacturer-published under their own test conditions, so treat the gap as directional, not lab-comparable.

How long does a cordless leaf blower run?
It depends almost entirely on the mode, not the pack. The EGO LB7650 publishes 150 minutes on low and 15 minutes on turbo from the same 5.0Ah battery -- a factor of ten from one tool on one charge.
How much energy does turbo use?
About 18.7 watt-hours a minute on the EGO LB7650: 280Wh (56V x 5.0Ah) over its published 15-minute turbo runtime. The same pack on low works out at about 1.9 watt-hours a minute over the published 150 minutes.
Why do some blowers only publish an average runtime?
Because an average hides the split. EGO publishes 'up to 90 min average' for the LB6504, which works out at about 3.1 watt-hours a minute -- a real figure, but one that tells you nothing about how long you get flat out. Blowers that publish separate high and low runtimes are being more useful.
Will a bigger battery double my blower runtime?
On low, close to it -- the draw is steady. On turbo, the tool is the variable rather than the battery, and the draw is roughly ten times higher, so extra capacity is consumed at ten times the rate. Size the pack for the mode you actually work in.
Which cordless blower runs longest?
On published figures, the EGO LB6000 backpack: up to 180 minutes on low from a 7.5Ah pack, against 150 minutes for the LB7650 handheld on a 5.0Ah and 120 minutes for the Ryobi RY404100 on low.
Should I use turbo at all?
In bursts, for material that will not move otherwise -- matted wet leaves, debris stuck on gravel, a stubborn corner. Running turbo continuously turns a 150-minute tool into a 15-minute one, which is the single most expensive habit in cordless yard work.
