Best gifts for someone with a big yard
On a big property the bottleneck is not cutting. It is moving things, and almost nobody buys themselves the tool that fixes it.

The mistake people make buying for someone with real acreage is buying something that cuts. Anyone with a big yard solved cutting years ago, usually expensively. What they have almost certainly not solved is moving material around the property, because the tools that do it are dull, bulky, and the sort of thing you keep deciding to rent.
The short answer
Who each pick is for, and who should skip it
| Pick | Buy it for | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|
| Gorilla Carts GOR6PS dump cart | Anyone with a property, tractor or not. Mulch, leaves, soil, firewood, tools. | They already own a working cart. A second one is storage, not help. |
| Agri-Fab 42 in tow sweeper | Someone with a lawn tractor and real leaf fall who currently rakes or blows it. | No tractor, or under about half an acre of lawn. |
| Agri-Fab 130 lb tow spreader | Someone who fertilizes or seeds on a schedule over an acre or more. | They fertilize once a year, or they have a push spreader and under an acre. |
| Agri-Fab 18 x 48 in poly roller | The person who owns everything, has frost heave or new seed to press in. | Their soil is heavy clay. Rolling compacted clay makes the problem worse. |
Every capacity and dimension figure on this page is transcribed from the manufacturer's own published page, all four cited below. The acreage thresholds are our arithmetic from the published working widths, with the pass-count method shown further down.
Where a tow-behind tool starts to pay
This is the part a gift guide usually skips, and it is the part that decides whether the present gets used. A tow-behind tool costs you a hitch-up every time, so it has to save more than that overhead.
1. Gorilla Carts GOR6PS — the pick that cannot go wrong
Gorilla publishes a 6 cubic foot poly bed, a 1,200 lb load capacity, a quick-release dump lever, a 2-in-1 convertible handle that switches between hand-pull and tow, and 13 inch pneumatic turf tires.
Who it is for: anyone with a yard bigger than a courtyard. It is the only pick here with no prerequisite — no tractor, no schedule, no particular soil. The convertible handle is the detail that makes it a safe gift: if they have a tractor it tows, and if they do not it still works.
Who should skip it: anyone who already owns a functioning cart or wheelbarrow of similar size. The alternatives are ranked in best wheelbarrows and yard carts, and the 8-in-1 WORX Aerocart covers the same job with more positions if they want one tool to do everything.

2. Agri-Fab 42 inch tow sweeper — the October hours back
Agri-Fab publishes a 42 inch sweeping width, a 12 cubic foot hopper, four brushes, a height-adjustable brush assembly and a hopper that dumps from the tractor seat.
Who it is for: someone with a lawn tractor and trees. On the pass arithmetic above, a 42 inch sweeper turns an acre of leaf clearing from a weekend into an afternoon, and it picks the leaves up rather than moving them somewhere else to deal with later — which is the real difference between a sweeper and a blower.
Who should skip it: anyone without a tractor, and anyone under about half an acre. The comparison against the blower route is in leaf blower vs lawn sweeper, and the wider sweeper options are in best lawn sweepers.
#ad Check the Agri-Fab 42" Tow-Behind Lawn Sweeper (45-0521) price on Amazon — how we're funded.
3. Agri-Fab 130 lb tow spreader — for the schedule keeper
Agri-Fab publishes a 130 lb hopper capacity, a 10 to 12 foot spread width, an enclosed gearbox, a rust-proof poly hopper and a spread-rate control operated from the seat.
Who it is for: someone who already fertilizes on a schedule over an acre or more. A 10 to 12 foot spread width against a push spreader's 5 feet roughly halves the passes, and a 130 lb hopper means one fill for most properties.
Who should skip it: anyone who fertilizes once a year or has under an acre — our EdgeGuard DLX review covers the push alternative, and best tow-behind spreaders ranks this class properly. Also skip it if they spread ice melt in winter, where a smaller hopper is easier to handle.
#ad Check the Agri-Fab 130 lb Tow Spreader (45-0463) price on Amazon — how we're funded.
4. Agri-Fab 18 x 48 inch poly roller — for the one who owns everything
Agri-Fab publishes an 18 inch diameter, a 48 inch working width, a poly drum, a drain plug and a fillable design that lets the weight be set with water or sand rather than fixed.
Who it is for: the person who already owns the cart, the sweeper and the spreader. A roller is the classic rent-it-one-day tool that nobody actually rents, and it has two real jobs: pressing new seed into contact with soil and flattening frost heave in spring.
Who should skip it: anyone with heavy clay soil. Rolling clay compacts it and compaction is the problem aeration exists to fix — see aerators for clay soil. The poly-against-steel trade is in poly vs steel lawn rollers.

What not to buy someone with a big yard
- A mower. They have one, it is sized to their property, and it probably cost more than everything on this page combined.
- A handheld blower. On an acre of leaves a handheld is a long afternoon. If leaves are the problem, the sweeper is the gift.
- Anything battery-powered on a platform you have not checked. EGO, Ryobi, Greenworks and Kobalt packs do not interchange, and a bare tool on the wrong platform is unusable — see battery compatibility.
- A second cart. Covered above, and it is the most common duplicate.
What we cannot tell you
We have not used any of these four. Every capacity, width and load figure on this page is the manufacturer's own published claim and none of them publishes a tested durability figure, a bearing life or a warranty term we can compare. Agri-Fab publishes no empty weight for the sweeper or the spreader, so we cannot tell you what either is like to move by hand when it is not hitched. Nobody publishes a minimum tractor size or drawbar rating, which is the figure that would tell you whether a small lawn tractor can actually pull a full 130 lb spreader uphill. The pass-count arithmetic rests on our own 100 ft pass assumption and a 10% overlap, both stated. And we do not know the person you are buying for — the one thing that decides every gift on this page is whether they own a hitch, and that is a question only you can answer.

Gorilla Carts GOR6PS 6 cu ft Poly Dump Cart
Gorilla Carts · Cart (no power) · Our score 8.7/10

#ad Price as of October 11, 2026. Prices change; we check daily. How we're funded.
Six cubic feet on four wheels with a dump release, and a tow handle for the days it is too much to pull by hand.
Published specs
| Type | Four-wheel poly dump cart |
|---|---|
| Hauling capacity | 1,200 lb |
| Bed volume | 6 cu ft |
| Bed size | 40 x 25.6 in |
| Tires | 13 in pneumatic |
| Handle | Convertible pull/tow |
| Unit weight | 54 lb |
| Warranty | Not published on the product page |
Source: GOR6PS 6 cu. ft. Poly Garden Dump Cart, gorillamade.com
Six cubic feet of water weighs 6 x 62.4 = 374 lb. The 1,200 lb hauling rating is 3.2 times that, so nothing you can fit in the bed short of wet sand or gravel will approach the number. The rating is telling you about the axle and frame, not about what the tub will hold -- with mulch or leaves you run out of volume long before you run out of capacity.
What the numbers favor
- 6 cu ft, double the Aerocart's volume
- Quick-release dump instead of tipping it by hand
- 13 in pneumatic tires roll over lawn and gravel
- Tows behind a mower or ATV when the load is heavy
What they don't
- 54 lb empty and four wheels make it awkward in tight beds
- Pneumatic tires can go flat, unlike the Aerocart's
- No warranty term published on the product page
your yard is narrow or terraced. A four-wheel cart needs room to turn, and it will not go up steps at all.

Agri-Fab 42" Tow-Behind Lawn Sweeper (45-0521)
Agri-Fab · Tow-behind (needs a tractor) · Our score 7.8/10

#ad Price as of October 11, 2026. Prices change; we check daily. How we're funded.
Ten pounds lighter and less than a third of the depth of the 44 in model folded, at the cost of every capacity figure Agri-Fab declines to publish for it.
Published specs
| Sweeping width | 42 in |
|---|---|
| Weight | 85 lb |
| Wheels | 11.0 in x 2.5 in semi-pneumatic |
| Dimensions | 67.0 x 51.0 x 24.0 in |
| Hopper capacity | Not published |
| Brush-to-wheel ratio | Not published |
| Hitch type | Not published |
| Dump mechanism | Not published |
Source: 42" Lawn Sweeper (45-0521), agri-fab.com
44 in model: 78.0 x 55.0 x 52 in = 223,080 cu in. 42 in model: 67.0 x 51.0 x 24.0 in = 82,008 cu in. 82,008 / 223,080 = 0.37, so the smaller sweeper occupies about 37% of the bigger one's box -- call it a bit over a third. In a single-car garage that is the difference between a sweeper that lives in the corner and one that does not fit.
What the numbers favor
- 82,008 cu in of storage box against 223,080 for the 44 in model
- 85 lb, ten pounds lighter to reposition
- 42 in swath is only 2 in narrower
- Semi-pneumatic wheels, same principle as the larger sweeper
What they don't
- Agri-Fab publishes no hopper capacity for this model at all
- No brush-to-wheel ratio published, so brush lift cannot be compared
- Smaller 11 in wheels than the 44 in model's 12 in
- No hitch type, dump mechanism or warranty published
you are buying on capacity. The one number that decides how often you stop to empty is the one this model does not publish.

Agri-Fab 130 lb Tow Spreader (45-0463)
Agri-Fab · Tow-behind (needs a tractor) · Our score 8.0/10

#ad Price as of October 11, 2026. Prices change; we check daily. How we're funded.
A 130 lb hopper on pneumatic tires that turns a two-hour push into one lap of the yard.
Published specs
| Type | Tow-behind broadcast spreader |
|---|---|
| Hopper capacity | 130 lb |
| Hopper material | Rustproof poly |
| Gearbox | Enclosed |
| Wheels | Pneumatic |
| Unit weight | 37 lb |
| Assembled size | 46.0 x 27.1 x 31.5 in |
| Spread width | Not published on the product page |
Source: 130 lb. Tow Spreader - 45-0463, agri-fab.com
A 130 lb hopper at a 3 lb per 1,000 sq ft application rate covers 130 / 3 = 43.3 thousand square feet, or about an acre. A typical 80 lb push hopper covers 26,700 sq ft at the same rate. Whether you ever hit that depends on the rate your product calls for, which is printed on the bag and not on the spreader.
What the numbers favor
- 130 lb hopper, 62% more than the largest push spreader we hold specs for
- Poly hopper cannot rust where fertilizer sits
- Enclosed gearbox keeps grit out of the drive
- 37 lb empty, so it is manageable to hitch and store
What they don't
- Spread width is not published on the product page, which is the one number you need to plan passes
- No published operating speed on the product page either
- Useless without a tractor or riding mower to tow it
you have no tow vehicle or a lawn under about 10,000 sq ft. A push spreader costs less and steers better around beds.

Agri-Fab 18" x 48" Poly Tow-Behind Lawn Roller (45-0604)
Agri-Fab · Tow-behind (needs a tractor) · Our score 8.5/10

#ad Price as of October 11, 2026. Prices change; we check daily. How we're funded.
Fifty-six pounds empty and 550 when you fill it from a garden hose, which is the entire case for a poly drum.
Published specs
| Drum | 18 in diameter x 48 in wide, poly |
|---|---|
| Filled capacity | 550 lb |
| Empty weight | 56 lb |
| Dimensions | 50.0 x 54.0 x 18.0 in |
| Filling | Drain and fill plug; fills from a garden hose |
| Hitch type | Not published |
| Warranty | Not published |
Source: 18" x 48" Poly Tow Roller (45-0604), agri-fab.com
550 lb spread across a 48 in drum is 550 / 48 = 11.5 lb per linear inch of drum. The contact patch is narrower than the drum is wide, so the pressure at the turf is higher than that -- but comparing like with like, the 24 in steel roller puts 910 / 48 = 19.0 lb per linear inch down, 1.65 times as much. The poly roller is the one to use on a lawn you are firming after seeding rather than levelling after frost heave.
What the numbers favor
- 56 lb empty, light enough for one person to stand on end in a garage
- 550 lb filled, enough to firm seed into soil
- Fills and drains from a garden hose -- no pump, no ballast to store
- 18 in drum rolls over small undulations rather than bridging them
- Poly will not rust when it is stored full of water by accident
What they don't
- 550 lb is 40% less than the steel roller's 910 lb
- Agri-Fab publishes no hitch type or warranty term
- Poly drums scuff and can crack on a stone edge where steel dents
- No published gallon capacity, so fill time cannot be estimated
you are flattening frost heave or a rutted new build. That job wants the extra 360 lb.
