Core aeration is one of the few lawn jobs where the tool decides whether the work happens at all. A hollow-tine corer does the job properly at any size; what changes with lawn size is how many times you have to stand on it. Here is that number.

How many steps a manual pass really is
Nobody publishes this, so we work it out. Hole spacing is a choice, not a specification — the grid below is our illustration for comparison, not a figure from either maker.
Ten thousand steps is a day's walking done standing in one place with a tool under your foot. That is the honest reason this page exists as a small-lawn recommendation rather than a general one.

1. Yard Butler ID-6C — the small-lawn answer
Two 3 in cores per step from a 37 in powder-coated steel tool. It is real aeration: soil comes out and a void is left, which is what relieves compaction. A spike aerator pushes soil sideways and compresses it further, which is why we do not rank them.
It stores in the space of a garden fork, needs no fuel, no charge and no tow vehicle, and Yard Butler guarantees it for life against defects.
Two honest limits. Dry, hard ground defeats it — water thoroughly a day before or the tines will not penetrate, which is the same rule that governs pulling weeds. And the step count above is the real constraint: this is a tool for patch work, problem areas and small lawns.

2. Agri-Fab 45-0299 — where the arithmetic sends bigger lawns
Thirty-two galvanized knives across 48 inches, pulling plugs up to 3 in deep, with a 175 lb weight tray so you can force depth in soil that would stop a hand tool. Ten thousand square feet takes about 52 passes.
It is here as the comparison, not as an upsell. If your lawn is over about 2,000 sq ft and you own a tractor or riding mower, the hand tool is the wrong purchase and this is the right one.
Without a tow vehicle it is a 94 lb ornament. That is the whole risk with this category, and it is why we rank the hand tool first on a page about small lawns.

Make sure aeration is the answer
Compaction and thatch produce similar symptoms and want different tools. Who should skip both
- Anyone aerating once, ever. Rent a walk-behind core aerator for a weekend; you will do a better job in two hours than a hand tool does in two afternoons.
- Sandy soils with no compaction. Aeration is a treatment, not a ritual. If a screwdriver pushes into moist soil easily, you do not have a compaction problem.
- Lawns with an irrigation system and no map. Both of these punch holes 3 in deep, and shallow drip or wire will not survive them.
What we cannot tell you
Neither maker publishes a plug diameter, and Yard Butler publishes no weight for the ID-6C. Nobody publishes a recommended hole spacing, which is why our step arithmetic states its 6 in grid as an illustration rather than as a specification. And we have not run either tool across a season to compare how quickly the holes close in different soils.

Take a 6 in by 6 in grid as an illustration -- that is our figure, not the maker's. 1,000 sq ft is 144,000 sq in, and a 6 x 6 in cell is 36 sq in, so the grid has 4,000 holes. At two plugs per step that is 2,000 steps for a thousand square feet, or 10,000 steps for a 5,000 sq ft lawn. Against a tow-behind with 32 knives, the arithmetic is the whole argument.

10,000 sq ft at a 48 in (4 ft) working width needs 2,500 linear feet. On a 48 ft run that is about 52 passes -- an hour or so behind a tractor, against a full day with a walk-behind core aerator.
