Best mower for wet grass

The honest answer to "which mower handles wet grass" starts with not mowing it. Extension guidance is explicit, and the physics is on its side. But lawns do not always wait for a dry Saturday, so here is what the published specifications say about machines that cope best when you have no choice.

Wet grass loads a mower in three separate ways, and each maps to something published.

• Torque, for the load. Wet growth resists the blade. EGO is the only maker here publishing a torque figure at all: up to 7.0 ft-lbs.
• Blade speed, for the discharge. Clippings leave on airflow the blade creates. Greenworks publishes 3200 RPM; EGO and Toro publish no blade speed.
• Deck material, for the build-up. Wet clippings cake on the underside. Toro publishes a 14-gauge steel deck; a thicker, smoother deck is easier to scrape and slower to corrode once you do.

The three, on published figures

1. EGO LM2135SP — the only published torque figure

Up to 7.0 ft-lbs of cutting torque is the single most relevant number anybody publishes for this job, and EGO is alone in publishing it. Wet grass is a torque problem before it is anything else: the blade has to keep its speed up through a load that dry grass never imposes.

The Select Cut multi-blade system helps on the discharge side, and the 1 to 4 inch height range lets you mow high, which is the single best thing you can do in wet conditions — less leaf removed, less material to clump.

Caveat: EGO does not state what the torque figure was measured at, and it publishes no blade speed or weight.

2. Greenworks LM2108S — blade speed and a bagging mode

3200 RPM published, a 4-in-1 deck that includes bagging, 75 lb, and a four-year warranty on tool and battery. In wet conditions bagging is the right mode — mulching relies on clippings falling into the canopy, and wet clumps sit on top instead.

The limit is energy: 320Wh and a 33 minute claim, and wet grass will spend that faster than the figure suggests because the motor is working harder for every square foot.

3. Toro 21356 — the deck that cleans up

A 14-gauge steel deck, 66 lb, 324 published watt-hours, a 150 minute charge and Personal Pace variable-speed rear-wheel drive that slows when you do — useful when you are picking your way across soft ground.

The deck material is the wet-grass argument. Every mower cakes underneath in wet conditions; a heavier gauge steel deck takes a scraper without deforming and holds up to the repeated wet-dry cycling that follows.

Toro publishes no torque, no blade speed and no cut-height range for this model.

If you have to mow it wet

1. Raise the deck two notches. Less leaf removed means less material to clump and less load on the motor.
2. Take half-width passes. Halving the bite halves the clippings per second going through the chute.
3. Bag rather than mulch, and empty before the bag is heavy — wet clippings weigh several times what dry ones do.
4. Sharpen first. A dull blade tears wet grass instead of cutting it, and torn tips brown within a day — see mower blades guide.
5. Scrape the deck afterwards, with the battery out. Caked clippings hold moisture against the deck and wreck the airflow next time.

What we cannot tell you

We have not mowed wet grass with these machines. Only one of the three publishes a torque figure and only one publishes a blade speed, so a like-for-like comparison is impossible. Nobody publishes a runtime measured in wet conditions, a deck coating, or a clog rate — and nobody publishes what moisture level their runtime claims assume, which is the variable this entire page is about.
