Should you mow wet grass?

This is one of the few lawn questions where extension services give a flat answer rather than a hedge. They do not say wet mowing destroys your machine or ruins your lawn. They say delay it, and the reasons they give are worth understanding because they tell you what to do on the days you cannot.

The published answer

Reason one: footing

The safety framing matters. Extension mowing-safety guidance pairs the wet-grass advice with a second instruction: mow across a slope, not up and down, because good footing is important on steep slopes, and steep slopes are both difficult and dangerous to mow.

Combine the two and the conclusion is unambiguous: a wet slope is the one combination to refuse outright. A 66 to 75 lb self-propelled machine that gets away from you downhill is not a lawn-quality problem.

Reason two: clumping

Extension guidance on clippings is specific about what happens. Clippings of an inch or less filter down to the soil surface and decompose quickly — that is the normal, desirable case. But if the lawn is wet or the grass has become too tall when you mow, clippings can mat together and smother the grass.

It adds that clumping is common with mulching mowers when the turf is wet, because of the excess water present, and that wet clippings used as mulch can mat down, reducing oxygen and moisture.

The battery consequence nobody mentions

A cordless mower makes wet mowing measurable in a way a gas machine did not. A deck loaded with wet material is a heavier load on the motor, and a heavier load means a higher draw. Published runtimes are best-case figures measured under conditions no manufacturer states, and wet grass is not that condition.

If you genuinely cannot wait

1. Not on a slope. This is the one non-negotiable, and it comes straight from the safety guidance.
2. Raise the deck. Less material through the deck is less to clog, and the one-third rule still applies.
3. Stop mulching. Bag or side-discharge. A mulching blade is designed to keep clippings circulating under the deck, which is exactly the wrong behavior when they are sticking together.
4. Narrower passes, slower pace. Overlap more than usual so the deck handles less material per foot traveled.
5. Rake the rows afterwards. Any clumps left sitting will smother what is underneath.
6. Clean the deck underside. Pull the battery first — on a cordless mower that is the whole safety interlock — then clear the packed material before it dries hard.

The real fix is frequency

Most wet-mowing emergencies are really overgrowth emergencies. A lawn cut on the height trigger rather than the calendar is rarely so long that a rainy fortnight forces your hand, and short growth mulches cleanly even when it is not perfectly dry.

We cannot quantify any of this. Nobody publishes a runtime penalty for wet grass, a clog frequency, or a threshold of dampness below which mulching still works. We have not mowed anything, wet or dry.

What is published is the guidance itself: delay when wet, because footing is better and mowers plug less on dry grass, and clippings mat when the lawn is wet or the grass is too long. That is enough to decide with.
