Storing a battery mower when the garage is already full

Nobody shops for a mower on storage, and almost everybody lives with the consequences of not having. A 21 inch deck with a handle up is a large object in a one-car garage for fifty-one weeks of the year, and the spec sheets have more to say about this than you would expect.

The short answer

The weights, and the ones nobody prints

Weight decides whether storage is a lifting problem or a floor-space problem, and it is published inconsistently.

The spread from 57.5 lb to 75 lb is 30%, and it is the difference between a machine one person can move onto a shelf and one that stays on the floor. That three of six brands decline to publish a weight for a machine you will lift is a genuine gap.

Vertical storage, and why it is a spec rather than a technique

SmartStow is Toro's name for a mower designed to stand on its rear end. That matters because standing a mower vertically is not a universally safe thing to do — the manufacturer has to have designed the deck, the handle geometry and the pack seating for that orientation.

A 21 inch deck stood upright occupies roughly the floor area of the deck itself rather than the deck plus the handle run, which on a typical walk-behind is the difference between a corner and a car's worth of aisle. If the garage is the constraint, this is the single specification to shop on.

The other route: buy less mower

If your lot is under a third of an acre, the storage answer and the mowing answer are the same machine. The Greenworks LM2054 is 57.5 lb, a 20 inch deck rather than 21, and it is rated to exactly the lot size that justifies it.

The trade is published in the same place: a third of an acre against a half, and a 3.6 inch cut-height ceiling against 4.0. Storage is a real reason to choose a smaller mower, but not a reason to under-buy for your lawn.

The pack is the part that cares about winter

The mower itself is largely indifferent to a cold garage. The lithium pack is not, and this is where we have to be careful about what we will and will not tell you.

What we can say with sources behind it is structural: on every platform in our registry the pack detaches, and on most of them it is the single most expensive replaceable component. Greenworks warrants its 80V battery for four years, EGO for three. Treating the pack as a thing that lives indoors and visits the mower is the cheap version of protecting that.

The end-of-season routine, in five minutes

1. Pull the pack. Before anything else and before the deck goes anywhere near vertical.
2. Clear the deck underside. Packed clippings hold moisture against the deck all winter, and a battery mower has no hot engine drying it out between cuts.
3. Check the blade edge now, not in April. A blade you find is dull in September is one you can deal with before the first cut matters — see the blade guide.
4. Fold or stow to the manufacturer's design. If it is a SmartStow machine, stand it. If it is not, fold the handle and leave it on its wheels.
5. Store the pack indoors, at the charge level its own manual specifies.

What we cannot tell you

We have not stored any of these machines through a winter. How much capacity a pack loses in an unheated garage, how well a SmartStow mower holds its position on an uneven floor, and whether folding handles stay tight after five seasons are all outside what a spec sheet covers.

The published facts are narrower and still useful: one mower is designed to stand up, the lightest weighs 57.5 lb and the heaviest 75 lb, and half the brands do not tell you which you are buying.
