One maker publishes percent, another publishes degrees, and the boundary limit is a different number from the lawn limit. Here is all of it, converted.

Slope is the specification that eliminates robot mowers, and it is published in two incompatible units by different makers. Worse, there are two slope numbers per machine — one for the lawn and a much lower one for the boundary — and only one manufacturer here publishes both.

The short answer

The Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD leads on published slope: 70% inside the installation, which Husqvarna also gives as 35 degrees, with a 50% limit at the boundary, on 0.9 acre. The 450XH takes 45% inside but only 15% at the boundary, across a larger 1.25 acre and a longer 270 minute mow time. The Segway Navimow i105N publishes 16 degrees, which is a 29% grade.

Percent and degrees, converted

A percent grade is rise over run. Sixteen degrees and 45% sound like very different numbers and are closer than they look, so convert everything before you compare.

In degrees, the three machines are 35, 24.2 and 16 — a spread of more than two to one between the top and the bottom. In the makers' own mixed units that comparison is nearly impossible to make at a glance, which is exactly why we run the arithmetic.

The second slope limit nobody notices

Husqvarna publishes two figures for each of its machines: the maximum slope inside the installation, and a separate, much lower maximum at the boundary. For the 450XH those are 45% and 15% respectively.

The reason is mechanical rather than arbitrary. At the perimeter the mower is turning, reversing and following an edge rather than driving straight up a face — a maneuver that needs far more grip than climbing does. A lawn whose bank runs right to the fence line can be inside the 45% figure everywhere and still fail, because the wire has to run across the steepest part of it.

Measure your boundary, not just your lawn. Walk the perimeter and find the steepest section the wire or virtual edge has to cross. That number, not the average slope of the lawn, is the one to check against the specification. The 435X AWD publishes 50% at the boundary; the 450XH publishes 15%; Segway does not publish a separate boundary figure at all.

1. Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD — the steepest published limit

Seventy percent inside the work area, stated by Husqvarna as 35 degrees, on all-wheel drive with a pivoting rear body that keeps the wheels loaded as the ground changes under the machine. Fifty percent at the boundary, which is more than three times what the 450XH allows there.

It also publishes a cut height range of 1.2 to 2.8 inches, which the 450XH does not publish at all, and a physical wire boundary with app-managed zones.

The costs are real and they are all consequences of the traction. Mow time is 145 minutes per charge against 270 on the 450XH. Working area is 0.9 acre against 1.25. And at 39 lb it is the heaviest robot in our registry, on the machine most likely to be carried up a bank when something goes wrong.

2. Husqvarna Automower 450XH — more lawn, gentler ground

An acre and a quarter, 270 minutes of mowing per charge, a 9.45 inch cutting width on three pivoting razor blades and GPS theft tracking. For a large lawn with rolling rather than steep ground, this is the more sensible machine of the two Husqvarnas.

Forty-five percent inside the installation is genuinely capable — 24.2 degrees is steeper than most people walk a mower across comfortably.

The 15% boundary limit is the specification that will disqualify it, and it disqualifies more lawns than the headline figure suggests. Eight and a half degrees is a gentle slope. If your perimeter runs along a bank, this is the wrong machine no matter how flat the middle of the lawn is. Husqvarna also does not publish a cut height range on this product page.

3. Segway Navimow i105N — wire-free, on gentler ground

Sixteen degrees — a 29% grade — up to an eighth of an acre, 58 dB published, 24 lb, and no perimeter wire to bury: boundaries are set with RTK positioning and vision in the app.

For a small suburban lawn with a modest bank, the wire-free setup is the feature that matters, because installing and repairing a boundary wire on a slope is exactly the job people hate. It also publishes both runtime and charge time, so the duty cycle is computable — 60 minutes of mowing against 90 minutes of charging is about 40%.

Sixteen degrees is the lowest published limit here, and Segway publishes no separate boundary figure. An eighth of an acre is genuinely small. Both are hard limits, not soft ones.

Measuring your slope before you buy

  1. Find the steepest section, not the average. Robot mowers fail at the worst part of the lawn, not the typical part.
  2. Measure rise over run. Lay a straight board on the slope, level it, and measure the gap at the downhill end. Gap divided by board length, times 100, is the percent grade.
  3. Convert if you need degrees. Degrees = arctan(percent / 100). A phone level app gives degrees directly and is accurate enough for this.
  4. Do the boundary separately. Walk the perimeter and measure the steepest point the wire or virtual edge crosses. Compare that against the boundary specification, not the inside one.
  5. Leave margin. Wet grass, leaf litter and shade all reduce grip below what a dry test suggests.

Who should skip all three

  • Anyone over 70% anywhere the machine must travel. That is the highest published figure in the category, and no amount of setup gets past it.
  • Lawns with steep boundaries and flat middles. Check the boundary number first; it fails more installations than the lawn number does.
  • Anyone who wants a slope-capable mower they push. A robot on a bank is a different proposition from walking one — see best mowers for hills.

What we cannot tell you

We have not installed these machines on a slope. Husqvarna publishes no noise figure for either model and no cut height for the 450XH; Segway publishes no boundary slope limit at all. None of the three publishes how slope capability changes on wet grass, in leaf litter, or across a season as tires wear — and slope is exactly the specification where those conditions matter most. Treat every published limit as a dry-grass, new-tire maximum.

Our arithmetic — 70% grade in degrees
35.0 degrees

A percentage grade is rise over run, so 70% is arctan(0.70) = 35.0 degrees -- which matches Husqvarna's own stated 35 degrees exactly. Worth converting because makers do not agree on units: Segway publishes 16 degrees for the Navimow, which is arctan of 0.287, or a 29% grade. Same quantity, two conventions, and a factor-of-two difference in what the machines will climb.

Our arithmetic — 45% grade in degrees
24.2 degrees

arctan(0.45) = 24.2 degrees. That is 8 degrees steeper than the Segway Navimow's published 16 degree limit and 11 degrees shallower than the AWD 435X's 35 degrees. The boundary figure matters just as much: 15% (8.5 degrees) is where the wire may run, which rules out installations whose perimeter climbs the bank even if the lawn inside it is within limits.
