How to pressure wash a driveway

A driveway is the job most pressure washers are bought for and the one where the results are hardest to hide. Concrete keeps a record of your technique: every missed strip, every lingering pause and every pass made with too narrow a tip.

How much machine you actually need

Cleaning units — PSI multiplied by GPM — describe the machine better than PSI alone, because pressure lifts dirt and flow carries it away.

Preparation, which decides most of the result

1. Sweep or blow the surface first. Washing loose leaves and grit is wasted water and it redistributes debris into the areas you have already done.
2. Move anything you do not want soaked, and note where the runoff will go. Water carries whatever it lifts.
3. Wet adjacent planting before you start if you are using detergent, so it is diluted rather than absorbed.
4. Check the electrics. CPSC guidance is a properly grounded receptacle, an intact three-wire cord and grounding prong, no splices, and insulating footwear.
5. Seat the nozzle fully. CPSC has recalled a machine over a nozzle that could disconnect from the wand under pressure.

The method

Avoiding stripes

Striping is the characteristic failure of this job, and it is almost always technique rather than the machine.

• Constant wand height. Force at the surface changes with distance, so a wand that rises and falls cleans unevenly.
• Overlap about a third of each pass. Less and you leave bands; much more and you double the time for no benefit.
• Keep moving. A pause concentrates the output on one spot for as long as you hesitate.
• Work in one direction across the whole surface. Changing direction mid-driveway shows up in raking light.
• Do a whole section in one go. Letting half a driveway dry before you do the other half leaves a visible boundary.

Runtime, on a cordless machine

A driveway is where a battery washer's 30 published minutes becomes a real planning constraint, because this is continuous trigger work rather than the stop-start use that batteries suit.

Note also that Eco mode at 2,200 cleaning units is within 10% of the corded Sun Joe's full output at 2,436 — so Eco is not a limp mode, it is roughly a capable corded machine.

Where the water goes

Everything you lift off the driveway leaves with the water. Detergent, oil residue and organic staining all end up wherever the runoff drains, which on most properties is a storm drain that goes straight to a watercourse.

Direct runoff onto lawn or planted ground where you can, and check any local rules before using detergent on a surface that drains to a storm sewer. This is the same logic that makes an edge guard worth having on a fertilizer spreader.
