Best cordless blower for driveways, patios and paths

Blower roundups rank on peak CFM, which is the right specification for a lawn buried in wet leaves and close to the wrong one for a driveway. On a hard surface, the tool is already more powerful than the job. What you actually need is the ability to turn it down.

The short answer

Why the low end is the spec that matters here

A driveway holds nothing down. There is no turf for debris to sit in and, when it is dry, nothing bonding leaves or clippings to the surface. Any of these tools will move that material on its lowest setting.

What high output does on a hard surface is create problems: it throws gravel, lifts bark mulch out of adjacent beds, drives debris into the very corners you are trying to clear, and burns roughly ten times the energy per minute for no additional result.

1. EGO LB6504 — the most controllable

225 to 470 CFM on a genuine dial, with 650 CFM turbo held in reserve for the one corner that needs it. It is also the only blower in our registry publishing an ingress rating — IPX4 — which is worth something on a tool used on damp paths and after rain.

64 dB published puts it in the middle of the field for noise, and EGO backs it with a five-year tool warranty. The gap is weight: EGO does not publish one for this model.

2. Greenworks 80V axial — lightest usable, with cruise control

5.5 lb tool-only is the second-lightest published weight in our registry, and the published cruise control matters more on this job than on any other: driveway work is long and fiddly, and not holding a trigger for twenty minutes is a genuine comfort feature.

It publishes 730 CFM and 170 MPH — the lowest peak air speed here, which is fine for dry hard surfaces — a 40-minute recharge and a four-year warranty. It publishes no noise figure and no minimum airflow.

3. Ryobi RY404100 — if the driveway is near a neighbor

57 dB published at 730 CFM is the quietest figure in the category, and driveways are where noise complaints actually originate: they are close to houses, close to boundaries, and used at inconvenient hours.

Its three speed tips (160, 175 and 190 MPH) are a coarser control than a dial, and at 9.4 lb it is the heaviest handheld we hold specs for. For a five-minute driveway that weight is irrelevant; for an hour of path clearing it is not.

Technique that matters more than the tool

1. Start at the far end and work towards where the debris should end up. Every pass should move material in the same direction.
2. Keep the nozzle low and angled forward, not pointed down. Down scatters; forward sweeps.
3. Work with the wind. Fighting it doubles the passes.
4. Turn it down near beds and gravel. This is the whole reason the low end is the spec to shop on.
5. Blow onto the lawn, not into the road or a drain. If it is leaf litter, it can then be mulched in with the mower.
6. Save turbo for the one stuck patch, then go back down.

What we cannot tell you

Peak CFM and peak MPH are generally measured separately and are not delivered at the same moment, and no manufacturer publishes an airflow figure at each dial position. We have not used any of these tools on any surface.

What is published, and what decides this page, is which blowers state how gently they can work: 225 CFM and 260 CFM from EGO, and nothing from the other two brands.
