EGO 56V vs Toro 60V Max: the honest watt-hour comparison

One of these brands publishes a real watt-hour figure. Once you see it, the whole voltage argument changes shape.

Toro does something no other brand on this site does: it prints the actual watt-hour capacity of its battery on the product page. That one number turns a 56V-versus-60V argument into something you can check with a calculator, and it is the reason this comparison is worth reading before you spend anything.

EGO puts more energy in the box — 420Wh nameplate against Toro's 324Wh published — and its platform reaches further, all the way to a 42-inch zero turn. Toro publishes better numbers, builds a 14-gauge steel deck, and stores vertically. Buy EGO for the ecosystem; buy Toro for the mower.

The watt-hour question Toro answers and nobody else does

Every brand prints a voltage on the pack. Almost none of them print the watt-hours, which is the number that actually decides how long you mow. So you multiply volts by amp-hours yourself — and the answer you get is systematically about a tenth too high, because the voltage on the sticker is the max-charge figure rather than the nominal one.

The arithmetic — What Toro's published figure reveals

54 / 60 = 0.90
Apply the same convention to EGO's 56V Max pack:
56 x 0.90 = ~50.4V nominal
50.4V x 7.5Ah = ~378Wh
Nameplate arithmetic said 420Wh. The convention-adjusted figure is ~378Wh.
That 378Wh is ours, not EGO's. EGO does not publish a watt-hour figure or a nominal voltage for this pack, so the adjustment above is an inference from Toro's published ratio, not a manufacturer specification. We show it because it is the honest way to compare two packs whose makers use different conventions — and because it still leaves EGO ahead.

Either way you compute it, EGO ships more energy: 420Wh against 324Wh on nameplate arithmetic, or roughly 378Wh against 324Wh on Toro's convention. The gap narrows from 30% to about 17%, which is exactly the kind of thing you would never notice if only one company were honest about its numbers. Energy per minute of mowing

Within a rounding error, these two mowers draw the same energy to cut the same grass, which is what you would expect from two 21-inch self-propelled decks. The runtime difference is a battery-size difference, not an efficiency difference. That matters when you are shopping: you are not choosing a more efficient mower, you are choosing how much fuel it carries.

At 7Wh per minute, a half-acre lawn — roughly 60 minutes of cutting by our sizing arithmetic — needs about 420Wh. The EGO carries that. 150 minutes is the number to plan your Saturday around

Toro publishes a 150-minute charge time for the 6.0Ah pack. That is the slowest published charge of any mower battery on this site, and it is the spec that bites hardest on a lawn the mower cannot finish in one go: 45 minutes of mowing buys you a two-and-a-half hour wait.

EGO does not publish a charge time for the LM2135SP kit, so we cannot put a number against it. We are not going to guess one. What we can say is that the EGO's bigger pack makes the question less likely to come up at all, because 60 published minutes covers most lawns in a single pass. Deck, storage and the things that are not electrical

Toro publishes a 14-gauge steel deck. Nobody else on this site publishes a deck gauge at all, and it is the only durability spec in this whole category that is a material property rather than a marketing claim. Toro also publishes a weight — 66 lb — and a vertical SmartStow storage position, which in a one-car garage is worth more than an extra ten minutes of runtime.

EGO answers with cut-height range: eight positions from 1 to 4 inches, the widest published range of any mower we have specs for. That matters more than it sounds. University extension guidance is to keep a cool-season lawn at 3 inches or higher, and a deck that tops out below 4 inches leaves you mowing at the limit of its adjustment all season. EGO also ships three interchangeable lower blades in the Select Cut system — mulching, high-lift bagging and an extended-runtime blade — which is a genuine flexibility advantage if you switch between mulching and bagging through the season.

Where each platform stops

This is the argument that should decide it for most people. EGO's 56V ARC Lithium packs run the mower, the blower, the trimmer, the chainsaw and a 42-inch zero turn riding mower that takes four of them. The packs are never stranded in one tool. Toro's 60V Flex-Force line is real and well built, but it does not reach as far, and a platform's value is the number of tools it saves you buying batteries for.

  • Buying one mower and nothing else? The platform argument does not apply to you. Buy the better mower.
  • Expecting three or more cordless tools? The platform argument is the whole decision, and it points at EGO. Work the ten-year figure in the cost calculator.

Which one to buy

Buy the EGO if you are buying a system

More energy in the box, the widest cut-height range here, a 5-year tool warranty, and a battery family that reaches from a hedge trimmer to a zero turn. It is the right answer for anyone whose next two purchases are also cordless.

Buy the Toro if you are buying a mower

A published watt-hour figure, a published weight, a steel deck with a published gauge, and vertical storage. If your yard is a third of an acre, your garage is full, and you have no intention of owning a cordless chainsaw, Toro's spec sheet is the more honest document and the mower is the better fit.

What we cannot tell you

  • Which cuts better. Cut quality is a deck-design question that only shows up on real grass. Neither spec sheet answers it and neither do we.
  • How the packs age. Neither brand publishes a cycle-life figure, so ten-year durability is unknown to us. See what is actually published about battery life.
  • Real-world runtime. Both runtime claims are manufacturer figures under manufacturer conditions. Tall or wet grass raises draw on both.
  • Noise. Neither publishes a decibel figure for a walk-behind mower. Nobody does.

324Wh (Toro's own figure)

Toro labels the pack 60V Max 6.0Ah and publishes 324Wh. 324 / 6.0 = 54V -- the nominal voltage, not the 60V max-charge figure on the sticker. Every brand's 'max volts' is roughly 11% above nominal, so a nameplate watt-hour number is always about 11% optimistic. This is the single most useful spec on this page.

What the numbers favor

  • Publishes a real watt-hour figure (324Wh) instead of leaving you to multiply the marketing voltage
  • 45 minutes from 324Wh, against Greenworks' 33 minutes from a nameplate 320Wh
  • 14-gauge steel deck, the only steel deck spec published on this page
  • SmartStow vertical storage -- a genuine constraint solver in a one-car garage

What they don't

  • 150-minute recharge is the slowest here by a wide margin
  • Toro's 60V line is narrower than EGO's or Ryobi's, so the platform grows less far

Is EGO 56V better than Toro 60V Max?
On stored energy in the box, EGO: 420Wh nameplate against Toro's 324Wh. On spec honesty, Toro, because it publishes an actual watt-hour figure rather than leaving you to multiply a marketing voltage. Those are two different questions and most buyers only ask the first one.
Why does Toro publish 324Wh for a 60V battery?
Because 324Wh is 54V times 6.0Ah, and 54V is the pack's nominal voltage. The 60V on the sticker is the max-charge figure. Every lithium pack behaves this way; Toro is unusual in publishing the honest number instead of the marketing one.
Are EGO and Toro batteries interchangeable?
No. Different voltage, different terminals, different battery management. Neither company sells an adapter, and there is no cross-brand path back once you have bought three tools on one system.
Which mower runs longer on a charge?
EGO claims up to 60 minutes on its 7.5Ah pack; Toro claims up to 45 minutes on its 6.0Ah. Per watt-hour they are close: EGO's claim works out to about 7.0Wh per minute of mowing, Toro's to about 7.2Wh.
How long does the Toro 60V battery take to charge?
Toro publishes 150 minutes for the 6.0Ah pack, which is the slowest published charge time of any mower battery on this site. EGO does not publish a charge time for the LM2135SP kit at all, so we cannot compare the two directly.
Does Toro's platform go as far as EGO's?
No. EGO's 56V line reaches a 42-inch zero turn riding mower carrying four of the same packs; Toro's 60V Flex-Force range is narrower. If you expect to buy five or six tools on one battery, that gap is the main argument against Toro.
