How much should you spend on a riding mower?

Buy watt-hours, not horsepower-equivalents. Here is how many your lawn needs, and what a second battery bay is really worth.

We do not print prices on this site, for the reason set out on our walk-behind cost page: a number typed into a page goes stale and a stale price is worse than none. What we can do is tell you how much machine your lawn actually requires, in a unit that does not go out of date.

The short answer

Size a riding mower in watt-hours, not horsepower-equivalents. The three electric zero turns in our registry publish between 1,120 and 1,280 watt-hours per acre. Multiply your acreage by 1,200, add 30% headroom, and buy the cheapest machine that carries that much energy on a platform you would keep. Under a quarter acre, do not buy a riding mower at all.

Watt-hours per acre is the unit that travels

Every maker publishes a horsepower-equivalent claim — 22 HP, 24 HP, 25 HP — and none of them publishes how it was derived. Watt-hours per acre comes straight out of each machine's own two published figures: how much battery it carries and how much lawn it claims to cut.

The RYOBI figure is an ECO-mode claim. RYOBI publishes "up to 2 acres in ECO mode" rather than a plain acreage rating, so its 1,120Wh per acre is the best case rather than the typical one. EGO and Greenworks publish their figures without a mode qualifier.

Sizing your own purchase

The arithmetic — How many watt-hours your lawn needs
Planning figure: 1,200Wh per acre
Half an acre: 0.5 x 1,200 = 600Wh
One acre: 1 x 1,200 = 1,200Wh
Two acres: 2 x 1,200 = 2,400Wh
Add 30% for slope, thick growth and pack aging:

Read that against the machines and something becomes clear: all three are sized for one to two acres, and only one of them — the EGO at full bays — carries enough energy for a comfortable two-acre cut with headroom. A half-acre lawn does not need any of them, which is a cost conclusion rather than a performance one.

What an empty battery bay is worth

The EGO ZT4204L is the only machine here that publishes a bay capacity above what it ships with: four packs installed, room for six. That is a cost feature disguised as a specification.

The arithmetic — Expansion headroom on the EGO

Full bays: 6 x 10.0Ah at 56V = 3,360Wh
3,360 / 2,240 = 1.50
At 1,120Wh per acre:
2,240Wh = 2.0 acres
3,360Wh = 3.0 acres
One extra acre of capacity, bought later,
without replacing the mower.

Whether that is worth paying for depends on whether the packs are shared with tools you already own. On the EGO platform they are — the same 56V packs run the mower, the blower and the trimmer. That is the argument our platform cost calculator exists to make.

The other two, and what they trade

The RYOBI ZR3 carries the same 2,240Wh in two big 80V packs rather than four smaller ones, publishes on-board charging and a 250 lb towing rating front and rear, and carries a five-year warranty. What it does not publish is top speed, blade speed, weight, cut height range or bay capacity — the thinnest spec sheet of the three.

The Greenworks CrossoverZ publishes the most: a 1.5 to 4.5 inch cut height, 17,000 FPM blade speed, 456 lb weight, 90 minute charge time with two dual-port chargers and a 350 lb towing rating. It carries the least energy at 1,920Wh and is the least efficient per acre at 1,280Wh — but it is the only one you can size against a published cut height.

When a riding mower is the wrong purchase

The cheapest riding mower is the one you do not buy. Below about a quarter acre the deck cannot turn, the storage footprint outweighs the time saved, and a self-propelled walk-behind finishes first.

The other alternative is a robot. The Segway Navimow i105N covers up to an eighth of an acre, weighs 24 lb, publishes 58 dB(A) and needs no wire — a completely different purchase with a completely different cost structure, worked through in robot mower running costs and robot vs riding.

The costs that are not the sticker

  • Batteries, eventually. Packs are warranted four to five years on these machines and are the most expensive component. Nobody publishes a replacement cost.
  • Charging time as a constraint. Greenworks publishes 90 minutes with two dual-port chargers — note the plural. Neither EGO nor RYOBI publishes a charge time for these machines at all.
  • Storage. A 42 in deck needs a bay it can be driven into. The Greenworks publishes 456 lb; the other two publish no weight.
  • Blades and belts. Ordinary consumables on any mower — see riding mower maintenance.

The purchase, in four steps

  1. Measure the lawn. How to measure your lawn gets you an acreage figure rather than a guess.
  2. Multiply by 1,200 watt-hours and add 30%. That is the installed capacity to shop for.
  3. Check what the platform shares. Packs that also run your blower and trimmer are worth more than packs that do not.
  4. Check the bay capacity, not just what ships. Room to add packs later is the cheapest form of headroom there is.

Which of these to buy, rather than how much to spend, is in best electric zero turn mowers.

What we cannot tell you

We have not mowed with any of these machines. Every acreage claim is the maker's own, measured on their own terms, and RYOBI's is an ECO-mode figure while the others are not — so the 1,120 versus 1,280 comparison is not strictly like for like. Nobody publishes a battery replacement cost, a charge time for two of the three machines, or a weight for two of the three. And we print no prices, deliberately.

56V x 10.0Ah = 560Wh per pack. Four packs = 2,240Wh; six bays filled = 3,360Wh. Against the published 2 acres on four packs, that is roughly 1,120Wh per acre -- the number to size any electric riding mower against.

What the numbers favor

  • Uses the identical 56V ARC Lithium packs as EGO's handheld tools -- the batteries are not stranded
  • Six battery bays, so range is a purchase decision rather than a fixed limit
  • 5-year warranty covering tool, battery AND charger
  • 32 published LED lights, which matters more than it sounds for dusk mowing

What they don't

  • Four 10.0Ah packs is a substantial share of the purchase price on its own
  • EGO's published watt-hour figure for this configuration does not reconcile with 56V x 10.0Ah x 4; we publish our own arithmetic (2,240Wh) and show the working rather than repeat a number we cannot verify
Skip this one if

your lot is under an acre. A 21 in walk-behind finishes a half acre in the time it takes to get a zero turn out of the shed, and costs a fifth as much.

80V x 14Ah = 1,120Wh per pack, and the machine carries two: 2,240Wh. RYOBI publishes up to 2 acres in ECO mode, so 2,240 / 2 = 1,120 watt-hours per acre. The EGO Z6 carries the same 2,240Wh for the same published 2 acres. Two manufacturers, two platforms, identical energy per acre -- which is the strongest evidence we have that 1,120Wh per acre is what an electric zero turn actually costs.

What the numbers favor

  • 2,240Wh on board, the largest pack set in our registry
  • Coverage claim is qualified with the mode it was measured in (ECO), which EGO does not do

Our arithmetic — Watt-hours per acre, and per minute
1,280Wh per acre / 38.4Wh per minute

60V x 8.0Ah = 480Wh per pack x 4 = 1,920Wh. Against the published 1.5 acres that is 1,920 / 1.5 = 1,280 watt-hours per acre -- about 14% more than the 1,120Wh per acre the EGO and RYOBI machines imply. Against the published 50 minutes it is 1,920 / 50 = 38.4Wh per minute, which is the only per-minute figure any zero turn in our registry lets us compute.

What the numbers favor

  • Publishes ground speed, blade speed, cut height range, weight and charge time -- no other zero turn here does
  • Both a coverage claim and a runtime, so energy per minute is computable
  • 1.5 to 4.5 in cut height, the only published range in the class
  • 60V packs are shared with 75+ other Greenworks 60V tools
  • 200 lb cargo bin and 350 lb towing published as numbers

What they don't

  • 1,280Wh per acre is the least efficient of the three on published figures

How much should you spend on a riding mower?
Enough watt-hours to cut your lawn in one session, plus about 30% headroom, and no more. The three electric zero turns in our registry run between 1,120 and 1,280 watt-hours per acre, so a one-acre lawn needs roughly 1,500 watt-hours of installed battery.
Why does this site not show riding mower prices?
Because a price typed into a page in September is wrong by October, and a stale price is worse than none. The buy links check the live price instead.
How many watt-hours does a riding mower need per acre?
On published figures, 1,120 watt-hours per acre for the EGO ZT4204L and the RYOBI ZR3, and 1,280 for the Greenworks CrossoverZ. Divide the installed watt-hours by the published acreage rating and you get the maker's own implied figure.
Is an expandable battery bay worth paying for?
It is the cheapest way to buy less machine now. The EGO ZT4204L ships four 10.0Ah packs -- 2,240 watt-hours -- in a bay that takes up to six, which is 3,360 watt-hours at full capacity, a 50% increase without changing mowers.
Is a robot mower cheaper than a riding mower?
It is a different purchase entirely. The Segway Navimow i105N covers up to an eighth of an acre and weighs 24 lb; an electric zero turn covers one to two acres. Below about a quarter acre the riding mower is the wrong tool at any price.
