Three electric zero turns now publish enough for a real comparison, and they are priced and sized closely enough that the decision comes down to two things: how much energy each carries, and how much of itself each manufacturer is willing to describe. One of those questions has a surprising answer.

The short answer

Buy the Greenworks CrossoverZ if you want a machine whose behavior you can predict: it is the only one publishing ground speed (8 MPH), blade speed (17,000 FPM), cut height (1.5-4.5 in), charge time (90 min) and weight (456 lb). Buy the RYOBI ZR3 for energy: 2,240Wh and a published 2 acres in ECO mode. The EGO Z6 matches RYOBI's 2,240Wh, takes up to six packs, and publishes the least.

Watt-hours per acre, across two brands

Every one of these machines publishes a coverage claim and a battery set. Divide one by the other and you get the only figure that compares them fairly.

RYOBI and EGO arrive at an identical figure from different voltages, different pack counts and different decks. That is the strongest evidence in our registry for what an electric zero turn actually costs to run: about 1,120 watt-hours to cut an acre. Greenworks is 14% above it, which is either a more conservative claim or a thirstier machine — and nothing either company publishes tells us which.

This is the same arithmetic the walk-behind pages use. A 21 inch cordless walk-behind implies roughly 640Wh per acre from the Greenworks and Kobalt acreage ratings. A zero turn spends about 75% more energy per acre and saves you most of the time — see acres per charge for the full comparison.

1. RYOBI ZR3 — the most energy, and an honest qualifier

Two 80V 14Ah packs is 2,240 watt-hours, the largest single pack set in our registry, driving four brushless motors behind a 12-gauge fabricated steel deck. RYOBI claims the power of a 25 HP gas engine and a 250 lb towing rating front and rear.

The detail that earns it first place is four words: in ECO mode. RYOBI states the mode its 2-acre claim was measured in. EGO publishes the same acreage with no mode attached, and Greenworks publishes neither. In a category where the coverage number is the whole purchase decision, saying how you measured it is worth more than another amp-hour.

The gaps are real: no published top speed, blade speed, weight or cut-height range, and Ryobi 80V shares nothing with the 40V handheld line most Ryobi owners already have.

2. Greenworks CrossoverZ — the one you can actually predict

Ground speed 8 MPH. Blade speed 17,000 FPM. Cut height 1.5 to 4.5 inches. Charge time 90 minutes on two dual-port chargers. Weight 456 lb. Cargo bin 200 lb, towing 350 lb. Runtime up to 50 minutes. No other zero turn here publishes more than two of those.

That disclosure is what lets you compute 38.4 watt-hours per minute of cutting — the only per-minute figure available for any riding machine we hold. It is also what tells you the deck goes to 4.5 inches, which matters if you are cutting tall fescue at the height the extension services actually recommend.

What it costs you is coverage and efficiency: 1.5 acres on four packs, and 1,280Wh per acre against 1,120 for the other two. The six-battery configuration exists for bigger lawns and is a different purchase.

3. EGO Z6 — the expandable one

Four 56V 10.0Ah packs, six bays, and a published 2 acres per charge rising to 3 acres with all six filled. Eight miles per hour, a 22 HP gas-equivalent claim, and a 5-year warranty covering tool, battery and charger.

Expansion is the argument. Every other machine here is fixed at the pack set it ships with; the Z6 lets you buy the acreage later, and the packs are the same 56V ARC Lithium cells that run EGO's mowers, blowers and snow blowers — see riding mower battery bays.

Against that: EGO publishes no blade speed, no cut-height range, no charge time and no weight for the Z6, which makes it the least documented machine on this page.

Who should skip all three

  • Anyone under about three quarters of an acre. A self-propelled walk-behind covers that in under an hour for a fraction of the money and the storage — see self-propelled mowers.
  • Steep ground. Not one of these three publishes a maximum slope. Riding machines on banks are a rollover risk, and absence of a figure is not permission.
  • Tight gates. A 42 inch deck does not pass a standard side gate. Measure before you buy, because nothing about this purchase is easy to reverse.

What we cannot tell you

We have not driven these machines. None of the three publishes a maximum slope, a deck float specification, a decibel rating or a cold-weather derating. RYOBI and EGO publish no weight, no blade speed and no cut-height range. Two of the three publish no charge time. And every coverage claim is a manufacturer figure measured under conditions only RYOBI partly states — grass height, moisture and terrain will all move it.

80V x 14Ah = 1,120Wh per pack, and the machine carries two: 2,240Wh. RYOBI publishes up to 2 acres in ECO mode, so 2,240 / 2 = 1,120 watt-hours per acre. The EGO Z6 carries the same 2,240Wh for the same published 2 acres. Two manufacturers, two platforms, identical energy per acre -- which is the strongest evidence we have that 1,120Wh per acre is what an electric zero turn actually costs.

1,280Wh per acre / 38.4Wh per minute

60V x 8.0Ah = 480Wh per pack x 4 = 1,920Wh. Against the published 1.5 acres that is 1,920 / 1.5 = 1,280 watt-hours per acre -- about 14% more than the 1,120Wh per acre the EGO and RYOBI machines imply. Against the published 50 minutes it is 1,920 / 50 = 38.4Wh per minute, which is the only per-minute figure any zero turn in our registry lets us compute.

On published figures the Greenworks CrossoverZ is the most completely documented -- it states ground speed, blade speed, cut height, charge time and weight, none of which the other two publish. The RYOBI ZR3 carries the most energy (2,240Wh) and qualifies its acreage claim with the mode it was measured in. The EGO Z6 matches RYOBI on energy and takes up to six packs.
How many acres can an electric zero turn mow?
RYOBI publishes up to 2 acres in ECO mode, EGO up to 2 acres on four packs (3 acres on six), and Greenworks up to 1.5 acres on four 8Ah batteries. Divide the watt-hours by the acres and the machines land between 1,120 and 1,280 watt-hours per acre.
Is an electric zero turn worth it over a riding mower?
A zero turn turns on the spot, which matters when the lawn has trees, beds and islands to work around. On open ground a lawn tractor covers the same acre for less money. Our zero turn vs walk-behind page covers the step below this one.
How long does an electric zero turn take to charge?
Greenworks publishes 90 minutes with two dual-port chargers. RYOBI publishes on-board charging but no charge time, and EGO publishes no charge time for the Z6 either -- so on two of the three, the overnight question is unanswered.
What can an electric zero turn not do?
None of the three publishes a maximum slope, a deck float specification or a noise rating. Slope is the figure we would most want, and on riding machines it matters most -- judge the bank yourself rather than assuming.
