A cordless yard tool kit for a quarter acre

Buying advice for yards comes in two sizes: the small courtyard kit and the acre kit. The quarter acre — the ordinary suburban lot, house and drive included — falls between them, and the advice that gets aimed at it is usually one of the other two with the numbers filed off.

The short answer

The one figure that sizes everything

Two manufacturers in our registry publish an acreage rating alongside a battery configuration, and both land near the same energy per acre. That gives us something to size against rather than a guess.

1. The mower — double the minimum, not ten times it

2. The trimmer — and a power head, since you are buying one anyway

The Greenworks 80V 2123802 publishes an adjustable 14 to 16 inch cutting path, 0.080 and 0.095 inch line options, a brushless motor, an 80V 2.5Ah pack (200Wh), up to 50 minutes of runtime, 9.15 lb without the battery, a LOAD N' GO bump feed head and a 4-year warranty on tool and battery.

The specification that matters at this size is the attachment fit: it takes Poulan Pro, Ryobi Expand-It and TrimmerPlus attachments, which means an edger or a pole saw later without a second motor and a second battery.

3. The blower — hard surfaces, nothing more

The Greenworks BL80L02 publishes 730 CFM, 170 MPH, 5.5 lb tool only, an 80V 2.5Ah pack (200Wh), up to 60 minutes on low and a 40 minute recharge, with a 4-year warranty.

Seven hundred and thirty CFM is genuinely high airflow for a quarter acre — more than the job needs on most days — and 5.5 lb tool only is the figure that makes it pleasant. The honest gap: Greenworks publishes no decibel figure for this blower, where EGO publishes 64 dB and Ryobi 57 dB for theirs.

Why one platform, at this size specifically

On an acre the mower often ends up on its own platform, because a rider is a standalone purchase with its own packs. At a quarter acre there is no rider, no second mower, and no tool that needs more energy than the others — so there is no reason to split.

What a quarter acre does not need

• A riding mower. Thirty-two minutes of walking is not the problem a rider solves, and storage at this size usually is.
• A backpack blower. 730 CFM handheld already exceeds what a quarter acre of hard surface asks for.
• A second mower battery, at first. One session, one pack. Buy the spare when you find yourself wanting it, not before.

What we cannot tell you

We have not run this kit across a season. The 32 minute mowing figure rests on our own 2.5 MPH walking assumption, because no manufacturer publishes a pace. The 640Wh per acre figure comes from two manufacturers' acreage ratings rather than a measurement, and neither states the grass conditions behind it. Greenworks publishes no decibel figure for the blower and no weight for the trimmer with a pack fitted. And nobody publishes how any of these runtimes degrade as packs age.
