A cordless yard tool kit for a half acre

This is the lot size where one battery stops finishing the lawn. Every other decision in the kit follows from that.

EGO Power+ 21" Select Cut LM2135SP

We have not tested these units. Every spec on this page comes from the manufacturer's own documentation and is linked to it. Every computed figure is arithmetic you can redo. Prices are checked daily — last verified October 4, 2026. Here is exactly how we pick.

The kit guides on this site are organized by lot size, and until now they skipped from a quarter acre straight to an acre. The half acre is the gap, and it is not a halfway answer: it is the specific size at which a single battery stops being able to finish the lawn, which changes what you buy rather than just how much of it.

The short answer

Budget about 320 watt-hours of mowing energy and roughly 63 minutes of walking behind a 21 inch deck. Then buy a spare pack, because no single-pack mower in our registry publishes a runtime that reaches 63 minutes — EGO's 60 minutes on a 7.5Ah pack is the closest any of them gets. A mower, a trimmer and a blower on one platform, plus one extra battery, is the entire kit at this size.

The two numbers that size everything

Both come from manufacturers' own published figures rather than from us guessing. Greenworks rates its 320Wh flagship for half an acre and Kobalt rates its 640Wh machine for a full one, which is where the energy figure comes from; the time figure is geometry and one stated assumption.

The arithmetic — Energy and time for a half acre
Greenworks LM2108S: 320Wh, rated to 1/2 acre
320 / 0.5 = 640Wh per acre
0.5 acre x 640 = 320Wh of mowing energy
21 in deck, 10% overlap -> 18.9 in = 1.575 ft
2.5 MPH walking = 220 ft per minute
1.575 x 220 = 346 sq ft per minute
0.5 acre = 21,780 sq ft
21,780 / 346 = about 63 minutes
The 2.5 MPH walking pace is ours, and we state it every time. No manufacturer publishes a walking speed, so every mowing-time figure on this site rests on that assumption — see what size mower do I need. At 3 MPH the same lawn takes about 52 minutes, which would fit inside EGO's claim. We use the slower figure because it is the one that does not flatter anybody.

The gap between 63 minutes and what anyone claims

This is the finding that makes a half acre its own page. Put every published runtime claim in our registry next to the 63 minutes the lawn needs, and none of the single-pack machines reaches it.

Runtime and capacity figures transcribed from each manufacturer's own product page. The 63 minute target is our arithmetic from the published 21 inch deck width and our stated 2.5 MPH walking assumption. Only Toro publishes an actual watt-hour capacity; every other figure here is advertised voltage times amp-hours.

Read the last column and the kit decision makes itself. Either you buy a machine that ships two packs, or you buy a machine with the largest single pack and add a second one. The two-pack machines are the Ryobi and the Kobalt, and the arithmetic behind that choice is in how many batteries do you need.

We have built this kit the second way, on EGO, for one reason: 420 watt-hours is the largest single pack in our mower registry, so it is the configuration that comes closest to finishing in one go — and the same pack then runs every other tool below.

1. The mower, and the pack that goes with it

The EGO LM2135SP publishes a 21 inch deck, up to 7.0 ft-lbs of cutting torque, a 56V 7.5Ah pack (420 nameplate watt-hours), eight cut-height positions from 1 to 4 inches, self-propel from 0.9 to 3.1 MPH, three interchangeable lower blades for mulching, high-lift bagging and extended runtime, up to 60 minutes of claimed runtime and a 5-year tool warranty.

The arithmetic — What the second pack actually buys
EGO: 420Wh over a 60 min claim = 7.0Wh per minute
63 minutes at 7.0Wh/min = 441Wh needed
441 - 420 = 21Wh short, about 3 minutes
A second 7.5Ah pack takes you to 840Wh,
which is 120 claimed minutes -- nearly
double what the lawn asks for.
That headroom is the point. Thick spring
growth, bagging and any slope all come out
of the same budget, and none of them are
in the 63 minute figure.

Three minutes short sounds like a rounding error and is not, because the 63 minutes is a clean-pass estimate. It excludes turns, trimming around obstacles and emptying a bag, all of which a half acre has more of than a quarter acre does.

The honest gaps: EGO publishes no weight for this mower, no charge time and no acreage rating — the 420Wh is the only figure doing any work here, and the acreage comparison above borrows Greenworks' rating to make it meaningful. The full spec review is in our EGO LM2135SP review, and the alternative at this size is argued in best mowers for a medium yard.

2. The trimmer, which borrows the mower's battery

The EGO ST1521S publishes a 15 inch cutting swath, 0.095 inch dual-feed spiral twist line, a POWERLOAD head that winds line at the push of a button, a carbon fiber split shaft with a lifetime warranty, a 56V 2.5Ah kit pack (140 nameplate watt-hours), up to 30 minutes of runtime and a 50 minute recharge.

Thirty minutes is a modest claim, and at a half acre there is more edge to cut than at a quarter. This is where buying the spare mower pack pays twice.

The arithmetic — The trimmer on the mower's pack
140Wh over a 30 min claim = 4.7Wh per minute
Fit the mower's 7.5Ah pack instead:
420 / 4.7 = about 89 minutes
Same tool, three times the session, because
EGO 56V packs are interchangeable across
the whole range.

The split shaft is the other reason this trimmer and not a cheaper one: it takes EGO's edger and pole saw heads, so the next two tools are attachments rather than motors. That route is covered in multi-head attachment systems.

The honest gap: EGO publishes no weight for this configuration, which matters on a tool held at arm's length. The one published weight in the category is Ryobi's 12.9 lb with a 6.0Ah pack fitted — the two are compared in EGO ST1521S vs Ryobi RY402110.

3. The blower, sized up from the small-lot answer

A half acre usually means more hard surface: a longer drive, more path, a patio. The EGO LB7650 publishes 765 CFM at peak, a variable range from 260 to 580 CFM, up to 200 MPH, 64 dB, 4.6 lb without a battery, and — unusually — both ends of its runtime: 15 minutes on turbo and 150 minutes on low from a 5.0Ah pack.

Publishing both ends is the reason it is here rather than the 650 CFM model we recommend on smaller lots. On a half acre you will spend real time on the trigger, and a figure of 15 minutes is one you can plan around in a way that an averaged claim is not.

The arithmetic — Turbo is the expensive setting
280Wh (56V 5.0Ah) / 15 min turbo = 18.7Wh/min
280Wh / 150 min low = 1.87Wh/min
18.7 / 1.87 = 10x the energy per minute
On the mower's 7.5Ah pack (420Wh):
420 / 18.7 = about 22 minutes of turbo
420 / 1.87 = about 225 minutes on low

The honest gaps: EGO publishes no ingress rating for this model where it publishes IPX4 for the smaller one, and most listings sell it bare — which on this kit is an advantage, because you already own the packs. The two EGO blowers are compared directly in EGO LB7650 vs LB6504.

Transcribed from EGO's own product pages, cited below. The energy-per-acre, mowing-time and cross-pack runtime figures are our arithmetic, with the walking-pace assumption stated above.

The order to buy in

  1. Measure the grass, not the lot. A half-acre lot is 21,780 square feet of land, and the house, drive, beds and patio come out of it. The method is in how to measure your lawn.
  2. Buy the mower in its largest pack configuration. At this size the pack is the purchase and the deck is the accessory.
  3. Buy the spare pack before the second tool. This is the step that separates a half-acre kit from a quarter-acre one, and it is the one people skip.
  4. Add the trimmer, then the blower, on the same platform.
  5. Only then consider attachments — an edger or pole saw head on the trimmer's split shaft is the cheapest expansion left.

What a half acre does not need

  • A riding mower. About an hour of walking is a long session, not an unreasonable one, and a rider needs roughly 1,120 to 1,344 watt-hours per acre plus somewhere to live. The line sits closer to an acre — see the acre kit and acres per charge.
  • A robot mower, in most cases. The largest working area any robot in our registry publishes is 0.9 acre and the common one is half that — robot mowers for one acre covers where the ratings actually land.
  • A third battery. Two 7.5Ah packs is 840Wh against a 320Wh job. Buy the third one when you have run out twice, not before.
  • A backpack blower. 765 CFM handheld already exceeds what a half acre of hard surface asks for.

The smaller version of this kit is the quarter-acre kit, the larger one is the acre kit, and the general buying order for a first-time buyer is in your first cordless yard kit.

What we cannot tell you

We have not run this kit across a season. The 63 minute figure rests on our own 2.5 MPH walking assumption, because no manufacturer publishes a pace; at 3 MPH the same lawn fits inside EGO's claim, which is exactly why we state the assumption rather than bury it. The 640Wh-per-acre figure comes from two manufacturers' acreage ratings rather than a measurement, and neither states the grass conditions behind it. EGO publishes no weight for the mower or the trimmer, no charge time for the mower, and no acreage rating at all — the acreage comparison on this page borrows Greenworks' rating to give EGO's watt-hours a scale. And nobody publishes how any of these runtimes degrade as packs age, which is the figure that decides what this kit is like in year five.

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
420Wh

56V x 7.5Ah = 420Wh, using EGO's advertised pack voltage.

What the numbers favor

  • 420Wh in the box -- the largest included pack of any flagship walk-behind on this page
  • Eight cut-height positions from 1 to 4 in, the widest published range here
  • Three interchangeable lower blades (mulching, high-lift bagging, extended runtime)
  • 5-year tool warranty, the longest published on this page

What they don't

  • EGO publishes torque (7.0 ft-lbs), not motor wattage, so it cannot be compared directly against Greenworks' 1500W figure
  • The 7.5Ah pack that earns the runtime claim is also the expensive one to replace
Skip this one if

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
140Wh

56V x 2.5Ah = 140Wh. 30 minutes of published runtime from 140Wh is about 4.7Wh per minute -- roughly a quarter of what a blower on turbo burns.

What the numbers favor

  • Lifetime warranty on the carbon fiber shaft, published
  • POWERLOAD winds the line for you -- the job everyone hates
  • 0.095 in line, the heavier of the two common home gauges
  • Split shaft, so it takes EGO's multi-head attachments

What they don't

  • Ships with the small 2.5Ah pack; 30 minutes is a modest published runtime
  • EGO does not publish a weight for this configuration

Our arithmetic — Watt-hours per turbo minute
~18.7Wh/min

280Wh (56V x 5.0Ah) over the published 15-minute turbo runtime = about 18.7Wh per minute. On low, 280Wh over 150 minutes is about 1.9Wh/min -- turbo costs roughly 10x the energy per minute.

What the numbers favor

  • Highest published CFM and MPH of any handheld here
  • Publishes BOTH turbo and low runtimes, so the trade-off is visible instead of averaged away
  • 4.6 lb bare -- the lightest published weight of the handhelds on this page

What they don't

  • 15 minutes of turbo on a 5.0Ah pack is the real constraint, whatever the 90-minute average says
  • Sold bare in most configurations; budget for a battery and charger

Common questions

What battery-powered tools do I need for a half-acre yard?
A mower sized past a half acre, a string trimmer for the edges, and a blower for hard surfaces. That is the whole kit. What makes a half acre different from a quarter acre is the spare battery: at this size one pack does not finish the lawn on any published runtime claim we hold, so budget for a second one.
How long does it take to mow a half acre?
About 63 minutes behind a 21 inch deck at a normal walking pace, by our arithmetic. That is the figure the whole kit sizes against, and it is longer than every single-pack runtime claim in our registry -- EGO's 60 minutes on a 7.5Ah pack is the closest any of them gets.
How much battery does a half acre need?
About 320 watt-hours for the mowing itself, derived from the roughly 640Wh per acre two manufacturers' acreage ratings imply. The catch is that 320Wh of capacity is not the same as 320Wh you can spend in one session -- the EGO mower carries 420Wh and still only claims 60 minutes against the 63 the lawn needs.
Can one battery mow a half acre?
Not on any published claim we hold. The longest single-pack runtime in our registry is EGO's 60 minutes from a 420Wh 7.5Ah pack, three minutes short of our 63 minute estimate. Ryobi and Kobalt both claim 80 minutes, but each does it across two packs rather than one.
Do I need a riding mower for a half acre?
No. A half acre is about an hour of walking, which is a long session but not an unreasonable one, and a rider is a storage and money commitment that only starts to pay at around an acre. Our acre kit covers where that line sits.
Should the whole kit be on one platform at this size?
Yes, and more so than at a quarter acre. Once you are buying a spare pack, that pack should fit every tool you own -- which is worth more at a half acre than the small differences between brands on any individual tool.
