Best battery lawn mower for the money

The smallest battery on this page does the most with each watt-hour. That inverts the usual ranking, and it decides the answer.

#ad Buy links are affiliate links. Prices come from a live daily check; where we have no verified price we say "check price" rather than print a stale one.

Value on a battery mower is not the price tag and it is not the size of the battery. It is how many claimed minutes each watt-hour buys, measured against the lawn size the maker is willing to put in writing. Run that arithmetic across the registry and the ranking turns upside down: the cheapest cordless mower here is the most efficient one on the page.

The short answer

For a lawn up to a third of an acre, the Greenworks LM2054. It carries the smallest pack here — 160 nameplate watt-hours — and claims 40 minutes from it, which is 0.25 claimed minutes per watt-hour against 0.143 for the EGO LM2135SP and 0.103 for the Greenworks LM2108S. Between a third and a half acre, the LM2108S, which is the only mower here Greenworks rates to a half acre. Past that, the EGO LM2135SP, because 420 watt-hours is the largest single pack we hold and the only one that gets near an hour on one charge. If every corner of the lawn is inside an extension lead, the corded LawnMaster MEB1114K has no pack to buy and no pack to replace. We print no prices here; the live figure on each button is the one to decide from.

What actually decides value on a mower

Deck width is the number on the box and it tells you how fast you finish, not what you got for your money. Four published figures do that:

  1. Claimed minutes per watt-hour. The published runtime divided by volts times amp-hours. It is the closest a mower has to miles per gallon, and it is the only figure on this page that every cordless machine lets us compute.
  2. The acreage rating the maker signs its name to. Greenworks publishes one on both of its mowers. EGO publishes none at all. A rating is a maker accepting a limit, which is worth more than a runtime claim.
  3. Watt-hours per inch of deck. Energy relative to the work the deck has to do. It is how you compare a 20 inch push machine with a 21 inch self-propelled one without pretending they are the same tool.
  4. Warranty length. The only published statement about how long any of this is meant to last, and the battery term is always shorter than the tool term.
Watt-hours here are nameplate figures, and we say so every time. Advertised volts times amp-hours — 40V x 4.0Ah = 160Wh. Only Toro publishes a true watt-hour number for its packs, and when it does the figure comes out about 11% below the nameplate one because it uses nominal rather than max-charge voltage. See watt-hours explained and the Toro 60V platform guide. Compare nameplate against nameplate and the ranking holds; compare across conventions and it does not.

Watt-hours, runtime claims, acreage ratings and warranty terms transcribed from each maker's own product page, cited below. The claimed-minutes-per-watt-hour column is our division of the two published figures either side of it. No price appears in this table by design — prices move daily and the buttons carry the live ones.

The order of that fourth column is the finding. The smallest, cheapest cordless mower on the page converts its battery into claimed minutes roughly two and a half times better than the 80V flagship, and nearly twice as well as the 56V one.

Why the small mower wins the efficiency column

Nothing mysterious: it is doing less work. The LM2054 is a push mower with a 20 inch deck. The other two are self-propelled with 21 inch decks, and a self-propel drive is a second motor pulling 75 pounds of machine uphill out of the same pack that is turning the blade.

The arithmetic — Watt-hours per inch of deck, and what the drive costs
Greenworks LM2054: 160Wh / 20 in = 8.0Wh per inch
Greenworks LM2108S: 320Wh / 21 in = 15.2Wh per inch
EGO LM2135SP: 420Wh / 21 in = 20.0Wh per inch
Same two Greenworks machines, same brand, same blade
speed claim of 3,200 RPM, one inch of deck apart:
LM2054: 40 min from 160Wh = 4.0Wh per minute
LM2108S: 33 min from 320Wh = 9.7Wh per minute
9.7 / 4.0 = 2.4x the drain per minute
One inch of deck and a self-propel drive cost
2.4 times the energy per minute, on Greenworks'
own published figures. That is what you are
buying when you step up, and it is worth
buying -- on a lawn big enough to need it.

So the efficiency column is not telling you the LM2054 is a better mower. It is telling you that on a small lawn the extra capability is dead weight you paid for, and on a big one it is the whole point. The honest version of "best for the money" is therefore a lawn size, not a product.

1. Greenworks LM2054 — up to a third of an acre

Greenworks publishes a 20 inch deck, a 40V 4.0Ah pack (160 nameplate watt-hours), 3,200 RPM maximum blade speed, seven cut-height positions from 1.2 to 3.6 inches, up to 40 minutes of runtime, 57.5 lb, a one-third-acre rating and a 3-year tool and battery warranty.

Three of those matter on a value page. The 40 minutes from 160 watt-hours is the best conversion on this site. The 57.5 lb is the lightest cordless machine here, which is what a push mower has to be to stay usable. And the one-third-acre rating is a limit Greenworks accepted in writing — useful precisely because it tells you when to stop reading this section.

The honest gap: this is a push mower. Greenworks publishes no acreage figure for a slope and no drive at all, so a lawn with a real hill in it is a different purchase — best mowers for hills covers that. Its 2-amp charger is also the slowest in the lineup.

#ad Check the Greenworks 40V 20" Push LM2054 price on Amazon — how we're funded.

2. Greenworks LM2108S — a third to a half acre

The LM2108S publishes a 21 inch 4-in-1 deck, an 80V 4.0Ah pack (320 nameplate watt-hours), 3,200 RPM, seven cut heights from 1.38 to 4.0 inches, up to 33 minutes, 75 lb, a half-acre rating and 4 years on both tool and battery.

It has the worst efficiency figure on the page and is still the right answer in its band, because efficiency only pays while the tank lasts. Greenworks rates this machine to twice the area of the LM2054 and backs it for a year longer on both halves of the purchase — the longest battery warranty here.

The arithmetic — Where the LM2054 stops and the LM2108S starts
1/3 acre = 14,520 sq ft; 1/2 acre = 21,780 sq ft
20 in deck, 10% overlap -> 18 in = 1.5 ft
2.5 MPH = 220 ft per minute
1.5 x 220 = 330 sq ft per minute
14,520 / 330 = 44 minutes for a third of an acre
The LM2054 claims 40. Greenworks rates it to a
third of an acre and its own runtime claim lands
four minutes short of our arithmetic for that area.
At a third of an acre you are at the edge of the
machine, which is exactly where the next one up
stops being an upsell.

The 2.5 MPH walking pace in that working is ours and we state it every time, because no maker publishes one. The method is in what size mower do I need.

#ad Check the Greenworks 80V 21" 4-in-1 LM2108S price on Amazon — how we're funded.

3. EGO LM2135SP — past half an acre

EGO publishes a 21 inch Select Cut deck, up to 7.0 ft-lbs of cutting torque, a 56V 7.5Ah pack (420 nameplate watt-hours), eight cut heights from 1 to 4 inches, self-propel from 0.9 to 3.1 MPH, three interchangeable lower blades, up to 60 minutes and a 5-year tool warranty.

It is the dearest mower here and the worst value on a small lawn. Past half an acre it becomes the best one, for a reason the efficiency column cannot show: 420 watt-hours is the largest single pack in our mower registry, and a single pack means one uninterrupted session. The two machines that beat its 60 minutes — Ryobi at 80 and Kobalt at 80 — both get there across two packs.

The honest gaps: EGO publishes no weight, no charge time and no acreage rating for this mower, which is why it is the only row in the table with an empty rating cell. The head-to-head against the two-pack alternative is EGO LM2135SP vs Ryobi RY40HPLM01B.

#ad Check the EGO Power+ 21" Select Cut LM2135SP price on Amazon — how we're funded.

4. LawnMaster MEB1114K — if the cord reaches

LawnMaster publishes an 11 A motor at 3,300 RPM no-load, a 15 inch cut from a 14 inch deck, five cut heights from 1.4 to 3 inches, a 7 gallon bag, 28.6 lb, folding handles and a 2-year limited warranty. There is no watt-hour figure because there is no battery.

That absence is the entire value case. No pack to buy with the mower, no pack to replace in year four, and a runtime set by the outlet rather than by chemistry. At 28.6 lb it is less than half the weight of the LM2054, which makes it the most liftable mower on the site.

What you give up is real: a 15 inch cut is the narrowest here, it bags only — LawnMaster publishes no mulching or side discharge — and your working radius is one extension lead. The trade is argued in full in corded or cordless and battery vs corded mowers.

Who should skip every mower on this page

  • Anyone over about three quarters of an acre. The largest acreage rating on this page is half an acre and the largest pack is 420 watt-hours. At that size you are choosing between a two-pack machine and a rider — the acre kit and electric riding mowers are the pages for it.
  • Anyone buying their second tool on a platform. If you already own packs, the value arithmetic here is wrong for you: a bare tool on the platform you own beats every kit on this page. Bare tool or kit has the reasoning.
  • Anyone whose lawn is mostly slope. None of these four publishes a slope rating, and the push machines have no drive to help. Best mowers for hills ranks on the drive specs instead.
  • Anyone who wants the cheapest line item today. That is not what this page ranks. It ranks what each watt-hour buys and what lawn size each maker will stand behind; on any given day the live prices may order the four differently.

What we cannot tell you

We have not run any of these four mowers. Every runtime figure here is the maker's own claim under conditions none of them describes, and a claimed minute is not a measured one — thick spring growth, bagging and any slope all come out of the same battery and none of them is in the claim. The watt-hours are nameplate figures (advertised volts times amp-hours), and only Toro publishes a real one, which lands about 11% lower. EGO publishes no acreage rating and no weight for the LM2135SP, so one row of the table is blank where the others are not. LawnMaster publishes no deck material. And nobody publishes how any of these runtime claims decay as a pack ages, which is the figure that would decide value in year five and is the one figure no maker on this page offers at all.

Our arithmetic — Nameplate watt-hours
160Wh

40V x 4.0Ah = 160Wh. Note it claims 40 minutes on 160Wh where the 80V flagship claims 33 minutes on 320Wh -- a 20 in deck and no self-propel drive motor is why.

What the numbers favor

  • Lightest published weight on this page at 57.5 lb, and the only sub-60 lb mower here
  • Claims 40 minutes from 160Wh -- the best published minutes-per-watt-hour of any mower on this page
  • Same 3200 RPM blade speed as the 80V flagship
  • 4-in-1 deck at the entry price

What they don't

  • Push only -- no drive assist on any slope
  • 1.2 in minimum cut height is lower than most cool-season lawns should ever be cut
  • 120-minute recharge, three times the 80V model's 40 minutes

What the numbers favor

  • 4-year battery warranty -- a year longer than EGO's 3-year, on the component that fails first
  • Publishes blade RPM, weight and acreage rating; the other two brands publish none of the three
  • 40-minute recharge on the included charger, the fastest published here
  • 4-in-1 deck adds turbo leaf pickup on top of mulch, bag and side discharge

Our arithmetic — Weight per inch of cut, against the lightest cordless mower here
1.91 lb/in vs 2.88 lb/in

28.6 lb over a 15 in cut is 28.6 / 15 = 1.91 lb per inch. The Greenworks LM2054, which carries the lightest published weight of any cordless mower in our registry, is 57.5 lb over 20 in = 2.88 lb per inch. The corded mower is 34% lighter for every inch it cuts, because it carries no battery. That is the trade in one number: you gain the weight back as a cord you have to manage.

What the numbers favor

  • 28.6 lb -- around half the weight of the lightest cordless mower in our registry
  • No runtime limit and no charge wait
  • Five cut-height positions, where most budget corded mowers publish three
  • 15 in cut turns inside obstacles a 21 in deck has to go round
  • Handles fold for storage, and the maker publishes that they do

What they don't

  • Cord range is whatever your extension lead reaches, and you have to mow around it
  • 3 in maximum cut height is too low for St. Augustine or a heat-stressed cool-season lawn
  • Bagging only -- the maker publishes no mulching and no side discharge
  • 7 gal bag is small, so expect frequent emptying on long grass
  • No published deck material and no published dimensions

Common questions

What is the best battery lawn mower for the money?
The Greenworks LM2054, for a lawn up to the third of an acre Greenworks rates it for. It carries the smallest battery here at 160 watt-hours and still claims 40 minutes, which is 0.25 claimed minutes per watt-hour -- nearly double what the dearest mower on this page manages. Past a third of an acre that efficiency stops mattering, because the tank runs dry, and the LM2108S or the EGO becomes the better buy.
Why is the cheapest mower the most efficient?
Because a 20 inch deck and a push drive ask less of a battery than a 21 inch deck and a self-propel motor. The LM2054 spends nothing on moving itself, so almost all of its 160 watt-hours goes into cutting. Efficiency and capability are different axes, and value lives on the first one only until the lawn gets big.
How much should you spend on a battery lawn mower?
As little as the acreage rating allows. Every mower here publishes or implies a lawn size it is built for, and buying past that size is the single most common way to overspend. We publish no dollar figures on this page -- they move daily, and the live price on each button is the one to decide from.
Is a corded mower better value than a battery one?
On cost per minute of cutting, yes, and it is not close: the LawnMaster MEB1114K has no pack to buy and no pack to replace, and its runtime is whatever the outlet allows. What you give up is the 15 inch cut, bagging-only discharge and a working radius set by your extension lead.
Does a bigger battery mean better value?
Not by itself. The EGO LM2135SP carries 420 watt-hours against the LM2054's 160, which is 2.6 times the energy, but its 60 minute claim is only 1.5 times the LM2054's 40. More tank bought less proportional time -- which is the arithmetic that decides this page.
Which mower here has the best warranty?
The EGO LM2135SP, at 5 years on the tool and 3 on the battery. Greenworks publishes 4 and 4 on the LM2108S and 3 and 3 on the LM2054; the LawnMaster is 2 years. On a value page that matters, because the warranty is the only published statement about how long the purchase is meant to last.
