Riding mower battery bays: what filling them actually buys

Range as a purchase decision rather than a fixed limit is unusual, and it changes how you size an electric rider.

Nearly every battery machine has a fixed capacity: the pack it takes is the pack it takes. A rider with more bays than packs is a different proposition, because it turns range into something you can buy later rather than something you chose at purchase.

What the bays hold

The EGO Z6 ships with four 56V 10.0Ah packs and publishes capacity for six. At 560 nameplate watt-hours per pack that is 2,240Wh installed and up to 3,360Wh with every bay filled — a 50% increase in capacity with no change to the machine.

What each additional pack represents

Applying the machine's own energy rate to the extra bays gives a defensible estimate, and it is important to be clear that it is an estimate rather than an EGO claim.

Only the first row is published by EGO. The other two apply the rate implied by that published figure and are labeled as ours. Coverage claims depend on conditions no manufacturer states.

The practical framing is simpler than the table: each 560Wh pack is worth roughly half an acre of cutting on this machine, at its own published energy rate.

The packs are not rider packs

This is the part that makes the expansion argument work, and it is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly: the Z6 takes the identical 56V ARC Lithium packs that run EGO's handheld tools. The same battery family covers a 4.6 lb blower and a 42 inch zero turn.

Two consequences. A 10.0Ah pack bought for the rider is the biggest battery you can then put in a chainsaw, and a household already on EGO arrives at the rider with part of its bay capacity already in the shed.

How to decide how many to buy

  1. Measure the mown acreage, not the lot. Beds, drive, paddock and buildings do not need cutting. Method in how to measure your lawn.
  2. Multiply by about 1,120 watt-hours per acre, the rate implied by EGO's own published coverage figure.
  3. Add a third. Published coverage is a best case under unstated conditions, and packs lose capacity with age.
  4. Divide by 560 to get packs, and round up.
  5. Subtract what you already own on EGO 56V, because those bays can be filled from the shed.
The arithmetic — Worked example: 1.5 mown acres
1.5 acres x 1,120Wh = 1,680Wh
Plus a third for margin: about 2,240Wh
2,240 / 560 = 4 packs
Which is exactly what the machine ships with.
Above about 2 acres, start filling the spare bays.

When more bays are not the answer

  • If the lot is complicated rather than large. Trees and beds cost deck efficiency, not battery capacity. More packs will not fix a lot that needs a narrower machine.
  • If the mown area is under an acre. Four packs already covers it twice over, and a walk-behind covers it at about 640 watt-hours per acre.
  • If charging time is the constraint. More capacity means more to recharge. EGO publishes an approximately two-hour charge for this configuration.
  • If storage is the constraint. Packs live somewhere, and the big ones are not small.

What we cannot tell you

EGO publishes a coverage figure for four packs and nothing for five or six, so the extra rows in our table are arithmetic rather than manufacturer claims and we have labeled them that way. Nobody publishes how coverage degrades with pack age, terrain or grass condition.

What is published: four packs installed, six bays available, up to two acres on four, a five-year warranty covering tool, battery and charger, and a battery family that reaches from this machine down to a handheld blower.

What the numbers favor

  • Uses the identical 56V ARC Lithium packs as EGO's handheld tools -- the batteries are not stranded
  • Six battery bays, so range is a purchase decision rather than a fixed limit
  • 5-year warranty covering tool, battery AND charger
  • 32 published LED lights, which matters more than it sounds for dusk mowing

What they don't

  • Four 10.0Ah packs is a substantial share of the purchase price on its own
  • EGO's published watt-hour figure for this configuration does not reconcile with 56V x 10.0Ah x 4; we publish our own arithmetic (2,240Wh) and show the working rather than repeat a number we cannot verify

your lot is under an acre. A 21 in walk-behind finishes a half acre in the time it takes to get a zero turn out of the shed, and costs a fifth as much.

280Wh (56V x 5.0Ah) over 300 published cuts = about 0.93Wh per cut. A useful way to size a pack: 100 cuts of firewood needs roughly 93Wh, so a 2.5Ah pack covers it with margin.

What the numbers favor

  • Publishes work done (300 cuts on a stated material) rather than a vague runtime
  • Standard 3/8 in pitch, 0.050 in gauge chain -- replacements are commodity items
  • 18 in bar on a consumer cordless saw
  • Runs on the same 56V packs as the mower, blower and trimmer

What they don't

  • 14.5 lb with the battery fitted is heavy for extended overhead work
  • The 300-cut figure is on a 4x4; hardwood rounds will be a fraction of it
Skip this one if

your cutting is limbs under 6 in. An 18 in bar is more saw than that needs, and a 10 in pole saw keeps you off the ladder.

It ships with four 56V 10.0Ah packs and publishes bay capacity for up to six. Four packs is 2,240 nameplate watt-hours by our arithmetic; six is 3,360Wh.
What does adding batteries to a riding mower buy?
Range, proportionally. EGO publishes up to 2 acres per charge on four packs, which works out at about 1,120 watt-hours per acre. At that rate two additional 560Wh packs represent roughly another acre of coverage -- our arithmetic, not EGO's published figure.
Can I use my other EGO batteries in the rider?
The Z6 takes the same 56V ARC Lithium packs as EGO's handheld tools, which is unusual and is the strongest argument for the platform. A pack bought for a blower is not stranded when you buy a rider.
Is it better to buy more packs or a bigger mower?
More packs, if the deck already suits the lot. Deck width sets how fast you cut and battery capacity sets how long you can keep going, so a lot that is large but not complicated is a capacity problem rather than a deck problem.
Does the rider use more energy per acre than a walk-behind?
Yes, by roughly 75%. The Z6 works out at about 1,120 watt-hours per acre against about 640 implied by Greenworks' and Kobalt's walk-behind acreage ratings. Speed costs energy; that is the trade for finishing in about a third of the time.
What is covered by the warranty?
EGO publishes five years on the Z6 covering tool, battery and charger. That is the only product in our registry where all three are published at the same term, and it is the longest battery term we hold.
