Best pole hedge trimmer

The case for a pole hedge trimmer is not that it cuts better. It is that it cuts the part of the hedge you would otherwise reach from a ladder — and a ladder on soft ground, holding a running blade, is the worst combination in garden work.

Why articulation is the specification

A hedge has two surfaces: the face and the top. A pole trimmer with a fixed head cuts the face well, because the blade runs parallel to it naturally. The top is the problem — approached from the ground, a fixed blade meets it at whatever angle the pole happens to make, which is how hedges end up with rounded, shaggy crowns.

Twelve positions of articulation means the head can be set flat relative to the ground regardless of the pole angle. That is the entire reason to buy an articulating head rather than a straight one, and it is worth more than a few extra inches of blade.

2. EGO HT2410 — when reach is not the problem

Twenty-four inches of forged steel, 3,000 strokes per minute, a 1 inch cut capacity, a dual-action fully serviceable blade and 6.17 lb bare. It runs on any EGO 56V pack with no power head in between.

For hedges you can reach standing — which is most boundary hedges under about six feet — this is the better tool: longer blade, published weight, published blade speed, one purchase.

It has no reach and no articulation. Above head height it becomes the ladder problem this page exists to avoid.

Cutting a hedge top from the ground

1. Set the head angle before you lift. Adjusting twelve positions at full extension is how you drop the tool.
2. Run a string line for the top. From below you cannot see the plane you are cutting, and eyes lie about level.
3. Work in overlapping sweeps, not stabs. A long slow arc across the top gives a flat surface; poking at high spots gives a wavy one.
4. Keep the blade below shoulder height where you can, and reposition your feet rather than reaching sideways.

Who should skip both

• Anyone with hedges under shoulder height. A handheld trimmer is lighter, cheaper and cuts a longer blade — see best hedge trimmers.
• Branches over an inch thick. That is pruning, and a lopper or pole saw does it cleanly where a hedge trimmer tears.
• Anyone not on EGO 56V. Both picks here are EGO. A power head plus an attachment is an expensive way to enter a platform for one hedge.

What we cannot tell you
