Our concrete roundup says a surface cleaner is the real upgrade on flatwork and then stops, which has been a gap on this site for as long as that page has existed. Filling it turned up something more useful than a product ranking: every surface cleaner on the shelf is rated for two to four times the water flow a homeowner pressure washer actually delivers, and flow is the spec that makes the head spin.

The short answer

Buy the Greenworks 15" (5210902) if you own a homeowner machine. Its 3,100 PSI ceiling is the only one here sized to real homeowner output rather than 1,000 PSI above it, it publishes its material (plastic and brass), and the 12 inch wand extension ships in the box. Buy the Westinghouse PWSC if you want the one published GPM rating in the category — 2.7 GPM, 15 inch path, four pounds — and can live with a 180 day warranty. Buy the Sun Joe SPX-SC14 for a stainless body, four 1.9 inch wheels and a 300 F hot-water rating, accepting that its own spec table says 13 inches while its description says 14. Whichever you pick: match the flow, not the pressure.

Flow spins the head. Pressure does not.

A surface cleaner is a shroud with two jets on a rotating bar. The jets are angled off-center so that the water leaving them pushes the bar round — the same principle as a lawn sprinkler. What pushes it is the volume of water moving through, which is gallons per minute. Pressure decides how hard each jet strikes the concrete once it gets there.

That is why a surface cleaner's advantage over a wand is coverage rather than aggression, and why the GPM rating on the box matters more than the PSI one. It is also why only one of the three makers here publishes a GPM figure at all.

The arithmetic — Published attachment flow against every washer in our registry
What the attachments are built for:
Westinghouse PWSC: 2.7 GPM (published)
Sun Joe SPX-SC14: 4.0 GPM (published)
Greenworks 5210902: not published
What our washers actually deliver:
Greenworks 60V cordless: 2.0 GPM
Sun Joe SPX3000: 1.2 GPM
Greenworks GPW1800: 1.1 GPM
Ratios, best case to worst:
2.7 / 2.0 = 1.35x the flow it wants
2.7 / 1.1 = 2.45x
4.0 / 1.1 = 3.64x
Nothing we rank reaches the design flow of any
attachment here. The head still spins -- these are
maximum ratings, not minimums -- but it spins at a
fraction of its design speed, and the coverage
per pass on the box is a commercial-machine
figure rather than a homeowner one.
A maximum rating is a ceiling, not a requirement. None of these three publishes a minimum flow or a minimum pressure, so we cannot tell you where a head stops turning usefully. What we can tell you is that the published ratings are all set well above the homeowner machines they will be sold to, which means the headline coverage rate is the most optimistic figure on each box. If you own an 1,800 PSI corded washer, pick on path width and build, and treat the PSI ceiling as irrelevant.

Every figure transcribed from the maker's own product page, all three cited below. All three use a 1/4 inch quick-connect fitting and all three use two rotating jets. Sun Joe additionally publishes a 300 F (149 C) maximum water temperature, 1.9 inch wheels and overall dimensions of 13.4 x 6.1 x 13.2 in; Greenworks publishes a 12 in wand extension in the box; Westinghouse publishes dimensions of 15 x 15 x 4 in and names the WPX2700, WPX3200 and WPX3400 as its machines. Count the "not published" cells: seven across three products, in a category where four specifications would settle the choice.

1. Greenworks 15" 5210902 — sized to the machines people own

Greenworks publishes a 15 inch cleaning width, a 3,100 PSI maximum, a 1/4 inch quick-connect, plastic and brass construction, a dual-nozzle rotating head, and a box containing the cleaner, a 12 inch wand extension and the owner's manual. It publishes no GPM, no weight and no warranty term.

Why it leads: its ceiling is 3,100 PSI against its own brand's strongest washer at 3,000 — a 3% margin. That is the most honest sizing of the three, and it is what you want from an accessory: built for the machine rather than for a number no homeowner unit reaches. The wand extension in the box is the other reason; a surface cleaner without one puts your hands at an awkward height for the whole job.

Who should skip it: anyone with a gas machine above 3,100 PSI, which is the lowest ceiling here; and anyone who wants a metal body, since plastic and brass is what Greenworks publishes.

#ad Check the Greenworks 15" Surface Cleaner with 12" Wand Extension price on Amazon — how we're funded.

2. Westinghouse PWSC — the only published flow rating

Westinghouse publishes a 15 inch cleaning path, 3,400 maximum PSI, 2.7 maximum GPM, a 1/4 inch quick-connect, dual rotating jets, a weight of four pounds, dimensions of 15 x 15 x 4 inches, compatibility with its own WPX2700, WPX3200 and WPX3400 machines, ratings for concrete, brick, wood and other outdoor surfaces, and a 180 day limited warranty. It publishes no material.

Why it is here: the GPM figure. It is the single most useful number in this category and Westinghouse is the only maker that states it, which makes this the one attachment whose fit to your machine you can actually evaluate before buying. Four pounds is also the lightest here by 2.8 lb, which matters on a tool you drag across 600 square feet of driveway.

Who should skip it: anyone expecting it to last. A 180 day warranty is the shortest commitment any maker in our entire registry offers on anything, and this is a product whose only moving part spins under load. Also note that all three named compatible machines are Westinghouse gas units and none is in our registry, so the stated fit is to a family of machines we hold no specs for.

#ad Check the Westinghouse PWSC Universal 15" Surface Cleaner price on Amazon — how we're funded.

3. Sun Joe SPX-SC14 — stainless, wheeled, and 13 or 14 inches

Sun Joe publishes 4,000 maximum PSI, 4.0 maximum GPM, a 300 F (149 C) maximum water temperature, stainless steel construction, four 1.9 inch wheels, 6.8 lb, dimensions of 13.4 x 6.1 x 13.2 inches and a 1/4 inch quick-connect. It publishes no warranty on the product page — and its spec table states a 13 inch extension where its own product description says 14 inches, on a product whose model number is SC14.

Why it is here: it is the only attachment of the three that publishes a weight, dimensions, a wheel size, a material and a water-temperature rating — five figures the others largely leave blank. Four wheels rather than a skirt alone is a real difference on rough concrete, and stainless steel is the only metal body in the group.

Who should skip it: anyone with a 1,800 PSI corded washer. You are paying for a 4,000 PSI and 4.0 GPM ceiling that your machine will use less than a third of, and the 15 inch heads cover more ground per pass. The width discrepancy is also worth taking seriously as a signal: it is a small error, on the one spec the model name is built from.

Which of our washers each one suits

Your machinePublished outputWhat to expect from a surface cleaner
Greenworks 60V cordlessUp to 3000 PSI, 2.0 GPM; eco 2200 PSI / 1.0 GPMThe best match here -- 2.0 GPM is 74% of the Westinghouse design flow. Pick the Greenworks attachment on PSI headroom, and remember the 30 minute published runtime is the real limit on a driveway.
Sun Joe SPX30002030 PSI, 1.2 GPM certifiedAny of the three attaches. Expect a slower head and less coverage per pass than the box implies. No runtime limit, which on flatwork matters more than output.
Greenworks GPW18001800 PSI, 1.1 GPM, PWMA certifiedThe lowest flow in our registry, at 41% of the Westinghouse design figure. A surface cleaner still beats a wand for evenness, but buy on path width and ignore every PSI ceiling on this page.

Washer figures transcribed from the manufacturers' own pages, cited below. The Greenworks GPW1800 is the only PWMA-certified machine in our registry, which means its 1,800 PSI and 1.1 GPM are third-party verified where every other figure on this page is a manufacturer claim.

Using one without leaving marks

  1. Test on a square foot out of sight. A surface cleaner holds the jets at a fixed height, which removes operator error and removes your ability to back off. Find out what it does to your concrete before you find out across the whole drive.
  2. Overlap each pass by about a third. The shroud's edge cleans less than its center, and the band that shows up afterwards is the one you did not overlap.
  3. Move at a steady pace, not a slow one. Dwelling leaves a clean patch that makes everything around it look dirty. Evenness is the entire reason you bought the thing.
  4. Keep it off vertical surfaces. These are flatwork tools. For siding, use a wand and a wide nozzle — see best pressure washers for siding, which covers why more pressure is the wrong answer on a wall.
  5. Use the right tip on the wand for edges. A surface cleaner cannot reach the last inch against a wall or a bed. The nozzle that can is in our nozzles guide.

Who should skip all three

  • Anyone without flatwork. No driveway, no patio, no garage floor, no sidewalk — no reason. A wand does paths and steps.
  • Anyone washing timber or siding as the main job. Decks and fences and siding are both wand jobs, and both pages argue for less pressure rather than a different attachment.
  • Anyone on a cordless washer with a small driveway. The Greenworks 60V publishes 30 minutes of runtime; a surface cleaner uses the same water either way, so the attachment buys evenness, not time. The trade is in corded or cordless.
  • Anyone who has not read what pressure does to concrete. A surface cleaner is more consistent than a wand, which also makes it more consistently damaging on soft or old flatwork. Pressure washing a driveway covers it.

What we cannot tell you

We have not used any of these three attachments. None of the three publishes a minimum flow or a minimum pressure, so we cannot tell you the point at which a head stops spinning fast enough to be worth having — which is the single most useful figure the category could publish and none of them does. Only Westinghouse publishes a GPM rating, so for two of the three we cannot assess the flow match at all. Greenworks publishes no weight and no warranty; Sun Joe publishes no warranty; Westinghouse publishes no material. Sun Joe's own page disagrees with itself about whether the cleaning path is 13 or 14 inches, and we have no way to resolve it. None of the three publishes a coverage rate in square feet per hour, so the "4X faster than a wand" style of claim cannot be checked against anything. And we have measured no cleaning result on any surface, which is why this page ranks on fit to your machine rather than on how clean your driveway ends up.

Our arithmetic — Pressure ceiling against the washer it is sold beside
1.03x the Greenworks 60V cordless

3100 / 3000 = 1.03. Greenworks rates this attachment barely above its own strongest washer, which is the most honest sizing of the three: it is built for the machine, not for a pressure figure no homeowner unit reaches.

What the numbers favor

  • The 12 in wand extension is in the box, not an upsell
  • Publishes a material (plastic and brass) where Westinghouse publishes none
  • 15 in path, tied widest here
  • 3,100 PSI is a ceiling that matches real homeowner machines rather than exceeding them by 1,000 PSI
  • Sold by the same brand as two of the washers in our registry, so the quick-connect fit is not a guess

What they don't

  • No GPM figure, and flow is what spins the head
  • No weight and no warranty term published
  • Plastic and brass against the Sun Joe's stainless steel

Our arithmetic — Flow the jets are sized for, against our registry
2.7 GPM -- more than any machine we hold

Westinghouse publishes 2.7 GPM. The highest flow in our washer registry is the Greenworks 60V cordless at 2.0 GPM, then the Sun Joe SPX3000 at 1.2 and the Greenworks GPW1800 at 1.1. A surface cleaner's jets are driven by flow, not pressure, so a 2.7 GPM attachment on a 1.1 GPM machine spins at a fraction of its design speed. That is the arithmetic nobody puts on the box.

What the numbers favor

  • Publishes a GPM rating, which the other two attachments do not
  • Four pounds -- the lightest of the three by 2.8 lb
  • 15 in path, tied widest here
  • Names the three machines it is built for instead of claiming universal fit and stopping
  • A stated warranty term, which Sun Joe's page does not carry

What they don't

  • 180 days is the shortest warranty of any product in our registry
  • No material is published -- the housing could be plastic or metal and the page does not say
  • The three named machines are all Westinghouse gas units; none is in our registry

Our arithmetic — Headroom over the strongest washer we hold specs for
1.33x the pressure, 2.0x the flow

4000 / 3000 = 1.33 and 4.0 / 2.0 = 2.0 against the Greenworks 60V cordless washer, the highest-output machine in our registry. Nothing we rank can approach this attachment's ceiling, which means the ceiling is not what you are buying -- the path width and the wheels are.

What the numbers favor

  • 4,000 PSI and 4.0 GPM is more headroom than any washer in our registry can use
  • Stainless steel body rather than the plastic-and-brass the Greenworks attachment publishes
  • Four 1.9 in wheels, the only attachment here that publishes a wheel size
  • 300 F hot-water rating, which neither other attachment states at all
  • Publishes a weight and three dimensions -- the most complete spec sheet of the three

What they don't

  • Sun Joe's own spec table says 13 in while its description says 14 in, and the model number says SC14
  • No warranty term on the product page
  • The most expensive of the three, for headroom a homeowner machine cannot reach

Common questions

What is the best pressure washer surface cleaner?
For a homeowner machine, the Greenworks 15 inch (5210902). Its 3,100 PSI ceiling is the only one of the three that sits near the output of real homeowner washers rather than 1,000 PSI above them, it publishes a material (plastic and brass), and the 12 inch wand extension is in the box. If you want a published GPM rating, only the Westinghouse PWSC states one -- 2.7 GPM -- and that figure is more useful than any of the PSI numbers.
Will a surface cleaner work with my pressure washer?
It will attach -- all three use a 1/4 inch quick-connect, and every washer in our registry takes one. Whether it spins at design speed is a different question, and it depends on flow. The Westinghouse is built for 2.7 GPM; the highest-flow machine we hold specs for delivers 2.0 GPM and the two corded ones deliver 1.1 and 1.2. On a 1.1 GPM machine the head turns, more slowly, and covers less per pass than the rating implies.
Does a surface cleaner need high PSI or high GPM?
Both do different jobs, and GPM is the one buyers ignore. Pressure determines how hard each jet hits; flow determines how fast the head spins and how much water moves across the surface. A surface cleaner is fundamentally a flow device -- that is why its advantage over a wand is coverage per pass rather than more aggressive cleaning.
Is a surface cleaner worth it for a driveway?
On flatwork, yes -- it removes the striping a hand-held wand leaves, because it holds the jets at a fixed height and spins them instead of relying on your arm. Our concrete roundup makes the same point. On siding, no: a surface cleaner is designed to sit flat on a horizontal surface.
What size surface cleaner should I buy?
The widest your machine's flow can keep spinning, which for a 1.1 to 2.0 GPM homeowner washer means a 12 to 15 inch head rather than a 16 inch or larger commercial one. Two of these publish 15 inches; Sun Joe's own spec table says 13 inches while its description says 14 and its model number says SC14.
Can you use a surface cleaner on a wooden deck?
Westinghouse publishes wood among the surfaces its PWSC is rated for. We would still read our decks and fences roundup first: pressure and distance matter more on timber than any attachment does, and the gentlest washer in our registry is the one that page recommends for it.
