Best snow blower for heavy wet snow

Heavy wet snow is not a depth problem. It is a density problem: the same eight inches weighs several times more, packs instead of flowing, and bridges in a chute that dry powder would pass through. That distinction picks the machine for you, and it has almost nothing to do with clearing width.

The short answer

What the second stage does

A single-stage machine uses one rotating auger to gather snow and throw it. That works while the snow flows. Wet snow does not flow — it compresses, sticks to itself and packs into the chute, and an auger that is also the thrower has nothing left to clear the blockage with.

A two-stage machine separates the jobs. The auger collects and feeds; a separate impeller behind it takes the packed snow and forces it up the chute. That is the mechanical reason a two-stage machine copes with wet snow, and it is why the impeller specification is the one to look for.

Only Greenworks publishes it: a 12 inch impeller at 1,800 RPM. EGO publishes no impeller diameter or speed for the SNT2400 at all, so on the single most relevant specification for wet snow, one manufacturer answers and one does not.

The only published figures for how much snow weighs

Snow density varies with temperature and moisture, and no snow blower maker in our registry publishes it. The one place a manufacturer does publish a mass-per-minute figure is on a snow shovel, and the shape of it is instructive.

Deeper, denser snow costs about 2.5 times the energy per square foot. Apply that shape to a snow blower's coverage claim — all of which are stated at 8 inches or at no stated depth — and the wet-snow reality is plain: the published car-space counts are a best case.

The three, on the specs that matter in wet snow

1. Greenworks SN80L620 — the one that publishes the impeller

Twenty-four inches wide, a 20 inch intake, a 50 foot throw and the only published impeller specification in the group: 12 inches at 1,800 RPM. In wet snow that second stage is the whole machine, and Greenworks is the only maker here willing to describe it.

It also publishes what the others hide: 176.4 lb of machine, 15 inch rear wheels with a stated tire size, power steering with a zero-turn hub motor, and a four-year warranty on both tool and battery. Heavy is not a drawback in wet snow — weight is traction, and traction is what lets an auger bite instead of ride up.

The honest cons: the 16-car coverage claim comes with no stated snow depth, where EGO states 8 inches, and the machine is locked to Greenworks 80V — a separate platform from their own 40V and 60V lines.

2. EGO SNT2400 — the same geometry, on packs you may own

Identical published width, intake height, throw and chute rotation, with separate brushless motors for auger and drive and four LED headlights. Peak Power means it runs on any two EGO 56V ARC Lithium packs, so if a mower and blower already live in the garage, the batteries are bought.

For wet snow specifically, the gap is information rather than capability: EGO publishes no impeller diameter, no impeller speed, no machine weight and no ingress rating for this model. It may well throw wet snow as effectively as the Greenworks. We cannot say so from published figures, and we do not guess.

3. EGO SNT2134 — the single-stage, and its hard ceiling

Twenty-one inches on a steel auger, a 45 foot throw, IPX4 — the only published weather rating here, which is worth something in the wet-snow scenario — and two 6.0Ah packs that run every other EGO 56V tool.

The limit is published and not negotiable: 13 inches of clearing height against 20 on the two-stage machines, and one auger doing both jobs. On a wet 6 inch fall on a short drive it will do the work. On a wet 14 inch fall it is two passes and a chute you will be clearing by hand — with the machine off, always.

Technique that matters more in wet snow

1. Clear early and clear twice. Two passes at 4 inches move less mass per pass than one at 8, and wet snow compacts under its own weight while you wait.
2. Take a narrower bite. Overlapping half the clearing width halves the load on the auger. It is slower per pass and faster overall than clearing a clog.
3. Never clear the chute with your hand. Stop the machine, remove the battery, and use the clearing tool. The auger stores energy and unloads when the blockage moves.
4. Keep the spare pack warm. No manufacturer here publishes a cold-weather derating, so the free precaution is the one to take.

Who should skip all three

• Short paved paths and decks. An electric snow shovel is 13 lb against 176, and it is the right tool for the strip between the door and the car.
• Gravel drives. The single-stage auger contacts the ground — see snow blowers for gravel driveways.
• Anyone not already on EGO 56V or Greenworks 80V. The packs are a large share of the purchase, and a snow blower is an expensive way to start a platform.

What we cannot tell you

We have not run these machines in wet snow. No manufacturer here publishes a snow density, a runtime in minutes, a cold-weather battery derating or a decibel rating. EGO publishes no impeller specification and no weight for either of its machines, and Greenworks states no snow depth for its coverage claim. What is published is what is in the table, and the wet-snow argument rests on the impeller — which is exactly the specification two of the three decline to give.
