Poly vs steel lawn rollers
Filled, the steel one is 65% heavier per inch of drum. Empty, the poly one is half the weight to move. Both of those are the point.

Lawn rollers are sold on a single number — how much they weigh when full — and that number is the one you use for perhaps two hours a year. The number you live with is the empty weight, and these two machines differ on it by a factor of two.

Weight per linear inch, which is the comparable figure
Both drums are 48 inches wide, which makes this an unusually clean comparison: the entire difference in ground pressure comes from the fill.
The capacity neither page publishes
You need to know how long each takes to fill, and Agri-Fab does not say. Both pages do publish an empty weight and a filled weight, so the fill is simply the difference and water has a known density.
Who should buy the poly roller
Anyone seeding, overseeding or firming after topdressing, and anyone who has to store the thing. Fifty-six pounds empty is light enough for one person to stand on end in a garage, 550 lb filled is ample to press seed into soil, and it fills and drains from a garden hose with no pump and no ballast to keep somewhere.
The 18 inch drum also rolls over small undulations rather than bridging them, which is what you want when the goal is contact rather than leveling.
Buy it knowing 550 lb is 40% less than the steel roller, that poly can crack on a stone edge where steel dents, and that Agri-Fab publishes no hitch type or warranty term.

Who should buy the steel roller
Frost heave, mole damage, and the rutted aftermath of a new build. Nine hundred and ten pounds on a 24 inch drum is the heaviest figure we hold specs for, and the hitch tubes double as a scraper so the drum does not carry wet soil around with it — which on clay is the difference between leveling a lawn and printing a pattern on it.
Buy it knowing 114 lb empty is a two-person lift, that it will rust if it is stored full, and that Agri-Fab publishes no gallon capacity, hitch type or warranty for it either.

What a roller will not fix
- Compaction. A roller compacts. If your lawn is hard and water pools on it, rolling makes it worse — that is an aerator's job, and the distinction is in dethatching vs aerating.
- A bumpy lawn caused by drainage. Flatten the surface and the cause is still underneath it.
- Clay in spring. Rolling wet clay is how a lawn gets sealed. Wait until the surface is damp rather than soft.

What we cannot tell you
We have not towed either roller. Agri-Fab publishes no hitch type, no warranty term and no gallon capacity for either machine, so three of the rows above are blank on both sides and two more are our arithmetic rather than the maker's figures. Neither page publishes a contact patch width, so the ground pressure comparison is relative and not absolute. And no maker publishes how many passes any weight of roller needs on any soil type.

910 lb against 550 lb is 910 / 550 = 1.65. Spread over the same 48 in drum width that is 19.0 lb per linear inch against 11.5. The 24 in drum also has a longer contact arc than the 18 in one at the same load, so the pressure does not rise in proportion -- but the total force pressing the turf down is 360 lb greater, which is what levelling frost heave actually needs.
What the numbers favor
- 910 lb filled, the heaviest roller in our registry
- Steel drum takes edge strikes that would crack poly
- Hitch tubes act as a scraper, so wet soil does not build up on the drum
- 24 in drum bridges small stones instead of pressing them in
- 48 in width matches the poly roller, so passes per acre are identical

550 lb spread across a 48 in drum is 550 / 48 = 11.5 lb per linear inch of drum. The contact patch is narrower than the drum is wide, so the pressure at the turf is higher than that -- but comparing like with like, the 24 in steel roller puts 910 / 48 = 19.0 lb per linear inch down, 1.65 times as much. The poly roller is the one to use on a lawn you are firming after seeding rather than levelling after frost heave.
