This is the smallest job a blower does and one of the most frequent: the two minutes after every mow spent getting clippings off the drive, the path and the patio. It needs almost none of what a blower is sold on.

The short answer

Buy for control, not output, and only clear the hard surfaces. Extension guidance is that clippings are a valuable source of nutrients, that decomposed clippings add the equivalent of one fertilizer application to the lawn each year, and that leaving them does not increase thatch. The EGO LB6504's 225 CFM low end is the most controllable published figure in our registry.

The part most people get wrong

Blowing clippings off the lawn is the most common misuse of a leaf blower. Extension guidance is unambiguous on every element of this: clippings are a nutrient source, you can use less nitrogen fertilizer if you recycle them, they break down rapidly and do not accumulate, and leaving them does not contribute to increased thatch.

Low maintenance, clippings returned: 1 lb in one application
Returning clippings is a large part of that difference.

The one published exception: remove clippings if the lawn is heavily infested with diseases such as leaf spot, rust or dollar spot, to help reduce disease severity. And if the lawn was wet or overgrown, clippings can mat together and smother the grass — that is a raking job, not a blowing one.

Runtime genuinely does not matter here. At roughly 2 to 3 watt-hours a minute on low, a two-minute clipping sweep costs about 5 watt-hours — under 2% of a 280Wh pack. Buy this tool for the other jobs and use it for this one.

The picks

1. EGO LB6504 — the lowest published setting

225 CFM is gentle enough to sweep a path beside a mulch bed without redistributing the bed, and the dial runs up to 470 CFM for the times the clippings are damp and stuck. IPX4 is a reasonable extra on a tool used right after mowing, when everything is still slightly wet.

2. Greenworks 80V axial — light, with cruise control

5.5 lb tool-only and a published cruise control, which is more useful on a repeated two-minute job than it sounds — you are not squeezing a trigger while walking a driveway edge. It publishes no minimum airflow and no noise figure, which are the two things this job would most like to know.

3. EGO LB6000 backpack — only if the property is big

A harness for a two-minute job is the wrong trade, and we would not buy this for clippings alone. On a large property where the mow itself takes an hour and the paths run a long way, its 180 published minutes on low and 260 CFM bottom end make it a sensible single tool for both.

The two-minute routine

  1. Mow first, blow second. Doing it the other way round means doing it twice.
  2. Lowest setting that moves the clippings. On dry concrete that is usually the bottom of the dial.
  3. Blow onto the lawn, never into a drain. The clippings are worth something on the grass and nothing in a storm sewer.
  4. Work away from beds, so any overspill lands on turf rather than in mulch.
  5. Wet clumps get a brush, not air. Matted clippings do not respond to airflow and will smear.

What we cannot tell you

No manufacturer publishes airflow at each dial position, so we cannot tell you which setting corresponds to which CFM on any of these tools. We have not used any of them.

What is documented: the extension case for leaving clippings on the lawn, the exception for diseased turf, and the two published minimum-airflow figures that make this a controllable job rather than a messy one.

Should I blow grass clippings off the lawn?
No. University of Minnesota Extension is clear that clippings are a valuable source of nutrients, that decomposed clippings add the equivalent of one fertilizer application a year, and that leaving them does not increase thatch. Blow them off hard surfaces, not off the grass.
What is the best blower for grass clippings?
The EGO LB6504, because the specification that matters here is the low end of the range and it publishes the lowest: 225 CFM. Clippings on a path move at almost any setting, and the risk is redistributing beds rather than failing to shift the clippings.
Why not just use the mower's bag?
You can, but extension guidance favors returning clippings. Bagging removes the free fertilizer, adds emptying stops and makes the job slower. The efficient pattern is mulch on the lawn, blow the overspill off the hard surfaces.
Do I need a powerful blower for clippings?
No, and power is actively unhelpful. Dry clippings on concrete are the easiest debris in the yard. High output throws them back onto the lawn in clumps and lifts mulch out of adjacent beds.
How do I clear wet clippings?
You mostly do not -- you avoid making them. Extension guidance is to delay mowing when grass is wet, because clippings mat together. If you have wet clumps on a path already, a stiff brush moves them better than air.
Should clippings go into a drain?
Never. Blow them back onto the lawn or collect them for compost. Anything blown into a storm drain leaves the property, and the same logic applies to fertilizer landing on hard surfaces.
