Best gifts for new homeowners, without trapping them on a battery
They have a yard and no tools. The one thing not to buy is a bare tool on a battery system they have not chosen yet.

Somebody has just bought a house with a yard and owns nothing to look after it with. That sounds like the easiest gift in the world and it contains one real trap: the modern yard tool market is organized around battery platforms, a bare tool only works on one brand's packs, and the platform decision is the expensive one a homeowner makes once. Give a bare EGO trimmer and you have either chosen EGO on their behalf or handed over something that needs a $200 battery before it does anything. Everything on this page is deliberately platform-free: it plugs in, or it has no motor at all.
The short answer
The platform trap, in one table
This is the whole reason this page exists, so it goes first.
| Gift | Works on arrival? | Commits them to | If they later choose differently |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bare battery tool | No -- needs a pack | That brand's battery system | The tool is useless |
| Battery tool with a pack | Yes | That brand's battery system | The pack has no other use |
| Corded tool | Yes | Nothing but an outlet | Still works |
| Hand tool | Yes | Nothing | Still works |
Our bare tool versus kit page works through the money side of this, and how to choose a platform is the page to send them when they are ready to decide for themselves.
1. LawnMaster MEB1114K corded mower — the big gift
A corded mower is an unfashionable thing to recommend and exactly the right gift here. It has no battery to choose, no pack to flatten halfway through, no charge time to plan around and no platform attached. LawnMaster publishes 11 A, a 3,300 RPM no-load motor speed, a 15 in cutting width, five cut heights from 1.4 to 3 in and a 7 gal grass bag — a real mower for a small lot rather than a toy.
The honest limits are the cord and the size. Fifteen inches of cut suits a quarter-acre or less; our what size mower page has the sizing arithmetic, and if their lot is bigger than that this is the wrong gift. Managing a cord around a lawn takes a bit of technique, and you will also want to tell them what gauge extension cord it needs — our extension cords page covers that, and 11 A over a long run is exactly the case where gauge matters.

2. Greenworks GPW1800 pressure washer — the one they want in month two
Every new homeowner hits the same moment: the previous owner's driveway, the green patch on the north side of the siding, the deck that has not been washed in six years. A pressure washer is the tool that fixes all three, it is corded so it is platform-neutral, and it is the thing people put off buying for years. Greenworks publishes 1,800 PSI, 1.1 GPM, a 13 A motor, five nozzles and — unusually — PWMA certification, which means the pressure and flow figures have been verified to a standard rather than printed on a box.
At 1,800 PSI it is at the gentle end, which for a gift is a feature rather than a shortcoming: this is the pressure range that will not strip paint off siding or score a deck board, and a new homeowner is exactly the person most likely to learn that lesson the hard way. Our pressure washers for siding page explains why lower pressure is the right answer there.

3. Snow Joe Shovelution — the in-season one
If you are reading this in Q4, this is the gift with the shortest time to first use. They have never cleared this driveway and they almost certainly own nothing to do it with. Snow Joe publishes a full eighteen-row spec table for the Shovelution — an 18 in poly blade, an aluminum wear strip, a 41.3 in handle, a D-ring grip, a spring-assisted second handle, a Medium-to-Heavy snow rating and a 2-year warranty — which makes it the only manual snow tool we can rank on published specifications at all. Our snow shovels page covers the category and the contradictions in it.
The spring-assisted second handle is the actual gift: it is the mechanism that takes the lift off a lower back that has never done this before. One thing worth knowing is that Snow Joe publishes no weight for it and nobody else in the category does either — the figure you will see quoted is the retail listing's, not the maker's.
#ad Check the Snow Joe Shovelution SJ-SHLV01 Spring-Assist Snow Shovel, 18 in price on Amazon — how we're funded.
4. Corona RK 24002 rake — the one under $25
The cheapest thing on this page and arguably the best value in it. Corona publishes a 22 in fan head with 22 tines, a 54 in hardwood handle, a coated rust-resistant frame and a stress distribution bar it specifically says stops the tines twisting and breaking — which is the exact failure mode of every $12 rake. Our leaf rakes page ranks it first for the same reason: it is one of only two leaf rakes in the category whose maker publishes a spec sheet at all.
It needs no power, no platform and no instructions, it will still be working in twenty years, and for a first autumn in a house with trees it is the tool that gets picked up every weekend. If you are buying something small, buy this rather than a gadget.

What we would not give a new homeowner
- A bare battery tool of any brand. See the table at the top. This is the single most common yard-tool gift mistake.
- A robot mower. It needs a boundary setup, a lot size they may not know yet and a budget conversation. Our is a robot mower worth it page is the one to send them, not a box.
- Fertilizer or grass seed. Both depend on their grass type, their soil and their climate zone, none of which you know. Our grass seed page starts with that problem.
- A 50 lb anything. They are unpacking a house. Do not hand them a bag of lime.
Which one, by what you know about them
| What you know | Buy | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Small lot, no mower | LawnMaster MEB1114K | $105 |
| Drive, deck or siding that needs washing | Greenworks GPW1800 | $95 |
| It is their first winter in the house | Snow Joe Shovelution | $40 |
| Trees, and a budget under $25 | Corona RK 24002 rake | $24 |
| Nothing at all about the yard | Corona RK 24002 rake | $24 |
| They already own a mower and a blower | Greenworks GPW1800 | $95 |
Prices are approximate and from our daily check; the buttons show today's. If they are at the stage of planning a whole kit rather than receiving one tool, send them our first yard kit page instead.
Verdict
Buy platform-free. The corded mower is the substantial gift that leaves their battery decision open; the snow shovel is the one they will use first if you are buying in December; the rake is the best thing on this page under $25 and will outlive everything else on it. Whatever you choose, do not buy a bare battery tool — it is the one yard gift that can turn into a $200 obligation for the person receiving it.

28.6 lb over a 15 in cut is 28.6 / 15 = 1.91 lb per inch. The Greenworks LM2054, which carries the lightest published weight of any cordless mower in our registry, is 57.5 lb over 20 in = 2.88 lb per inch. The corded mower is 34% lighter for every inch it cuts, because it carries no battery. That is the trade in one number: you gain the weight back as a cord you have to manage.
What the numbers favor
- 28.6 lb -- around half the weight of the lightest cordless mower in our registry
- No runtime limit and no charge wait
- Five cut-height positions, where most budget corded mowers publish three
- 15 in cut turns inside obstacles a 21 in deck has to go round
- Handles fold for storage, and the maker publishes that they do
What they don't
- Cord range is whatever your extension lead reaches, and you have to mow around it
- 3 in maximum cut height is too low for St. Augustine or a heat-stressed cool-season lawn
- Bagging only -- the maker publishes no mulching and no side discharge
- 7 gal bag is small, so expect frequent emptying on long grass
- No published deck material and no published dimensions
you mow more than about 2,500 sq ft, your lawn is more than one extension lead from an outlet, or you want to mulch clippings back into the lawn.

Source: 1800 PSI 1.2 GPM Pressure Washer (Open Frame) PWMA Certified, greenworkstools.com
1800 PSI x 1.1 GPM = 1,980 cleaning units. That is the lowest figure in our registry -- 19% under the Sun Joe SPX3000's 2,436 and a third of the Greenworks 60V's 6,000 at full output. On a driveway that is a shortcoming. On vinyl siding, where the Polymeric Exterior Products Association publishes no safe PSI at all and warns that water forced behind the panels rots the sheathing, the lowest certified output in the class is the one you want.
What the numbers favor
- PWMA Certified, so the 1800 PSI and 1.1 GPM are independently verified rather than marketing maximums
- 1,980 cleaning units -- the gentlest output we hold specs for
- 25 ft hose plus a 35 ft cord gives 60 ft of working radius, the longest here
- Inline GFCI on the cord, published rather than implied
- 8 in wheels roll over a lawn between elevations instead of digging in
- 3-year tool warranty, a year longer than the Sun Joe
- Publishes a maximum inlet water temperature, which most makers omit
What they don't
- 1.1 GPM is the lowest flow here, and rinsing a two-story wall is a flow job
- Ships a turbo nozzle and a 0 degree tip, neither of which belongs anywhere near vinyl
- No published weight, so you cannot judge how it carries around a house
- No published soap tank capacity, which is the specification that matters most on siding
- No published Total Stop System detail
your main job is a concrete driveway or a stripped-paint deck. At 1,980 cleaning units you will be there a long time.

An 18 in poly blade with an aluminum wear strip and a spring-assisted second handle -- and the only manual snow tool we found whose maker publishes a full spec table, contradictions and all.
Published specs
| Model | SJ-SHLV01 (product code SJ-SHLV01-RED) |
|---|---|
| Blade | 18 in wide; Snow Joe publishes "Blade Material Poly" |
| Wear strip | Aluminum |
| Handle length | 41.3 in |
| Assembled length | 50 in |
| Assembled depth | 3.9 in |
| Grip | D-Ring |
| Second handle | Spring-assisted, published as the strain-reducing feature |
| Type of snow | Medium-to-Heavy (Snow Joe's own rating) |
| Power type | Manual |
| Warranty | 2 years |
| Weight | Not published by Snow Joe. The Amazon listing title says 3.5 lb; that figure is the listing's, not the maker's |
Snow Joe's own spec table publishes Handle Length 41.3 in, Assembled Length 50 in and Product Length 24.8 in. A 41.3 in handle plus a 24.8 in head would be 66.1 in, not 50, and a 50 in tool cannot contain a 41.3 in handle and a 24.8 in head end to end. At least one of the three is measuring something other than what its label says -- most likely Product Length is a carton dimension. We publish all three because they are what Snow Joe publishes, and flag the arithmetic rather than quietly picking the one we like. This is still the deepest spec table in the category.
What the numbers favor
- Snow Joe publishes an 18-row spec table, which in manual snow tools is the exception rather than the rule
- 18 in poly blade with a named aluminum wear strip, so the wearing part is identified
- The spring-assisted second handle is the one design feature in this category aimed at the actual injury risk
- D-Ring grip, published, rather than an unnamed "ergonomic handle"
- A 2-year warranty on a hand tool in the price of a tank of gas
- The cheapest of the three tools on this page, and the most versatile
What they don't
- No published weight, on a tool whose entire job is lifting
- The three published length figures do not reconcile with each other
- The spec table says "Color Blue" for a product whose own code ends -RED
- Snow Joe's store lists the replacement Hardware Pack as sold out, and the spring assembly is the part most likely to fail
- Two years is the shortest warranty of the three tools here
- A poly blade with a thin wear strip is not an ice-chopping tool, and Snow Joe does not claim it is
your snow arrives as packed ice, or your driveway is long and flat. This is a lifting shovel rated Medium-to-Heavy by its own maker, not an ice breaker, and on a long flat run a pusher moves the same snow with half the walking and none of the lifting.

A 22-tine fan head on a 54 inch hardwood handle with a lifetime warranty -- and the only leaf rake we could find whose maker publishes a spec sheet at all.
Published specs
| SKU | RK 24002 |
|---|---|
| Head | 22 in |
| Tines | 22, fan-shaped head |
| Handle | 54 in hardwood |
| Frame and tines | Coated, rust-resistant |
| Stress distribution bar | Published: prevents tines twisting and breaking when pressed into ground |
| Warranty | Lifetime, against material and workmanship defects, with original proof of purchase |
| Weight | Not published |
| Tine material | Not published -- the page says only "durable metal" |
| Tine length, gauge and spacing | Not published |
Source: Corona RK 24002 Spring Brace Rake, 22 in. Head, coronatools.com
A 22 in head with a realistic 15% overlap sweeps about 18.7 in = 1.56 ft per pass. 1,000 sq ft / 1.56 = about 641 ft of travel, and raking is a back-and-forth motion rather than a single forward pass, so call it roughly 1,000 ft of walking per 1,000 sq ft of lawn. A quarter acre of leaf fall is therefore about two miles of raking. That arithmetic is ours, from Corona's published head width, and it is the honest case for owning a blower or a sweeper as well.
What the numbers favor
- Corona publishes a spec sheet at all, which in this category is the exception
- 22 tines on a 22 in head, both stated, so the rake can actually be compared
- 54 in handle, which is long enough to rake without bending for most adults
- A lifetime warranty on a hand tool that costs less than a tank of gas
- The stress distribution bar is a named, described feature rather than a marketing word
- Coated frame and tines, published as rust-resistant, on a tool that lives outdoors
What they don't
- No published weight, which on a tool swung for an hour is the figure that matters most
- Tine material is never named -- Corona says only "durable metal"
- No tine length, gauge or spacing published, so clog resistance cannot be assessed
- A 22 in head is mid-size; a wide poly sweep moves more leaf per pass on open lawn
- Hardwood handles need storing dry, which a fiberglass or aluminum handle does not
you are clearing more than about a quarter acre of heavy leaf fall. At roughly 1,000 ft of walking per 1,000 sq ft, raking stops being the sensible tool and a blower or a tow-behind sweeper starts.
