#ad Buy links are affiliate links. Prices come from a live daily check; where we have no verified price we say "check price" rather than print a stale one.
Under twenty-five dollars the market fills up with things that look like presents and work like nothing. The way through it is to ignore price for a moment and ask which cheap items a maker is prepared to publish real figures for — a coverage area, a named pattern set, an analysis — because that is a decent proxy for whether the thing works. Five of them cleared that bar and the price line at the same time.
The short answer
Where the twenty-five dollar line actually falls
This page has a number in its title and we do not control that number, so here is how we handle it honestly.
- We selected on the live price at build time and we do not print prices in the text. Every figure you see is pulled at request time and stamped with the date it was verified.
- If a pick has crossed the line when you read this, the button will show it. That is the design: a stale number in prose would be worse than no number. The site-wide policy is on our disclosure page.
- Two of the five sit close to the line. The oscillating sprinkler and the gear-drive head are the ones most likely to drift over it; the nozzle and the fertilizer have the most headroom.
- The next band up is a different page. If your budget is really closer to a hundred, best yard tools under $100 ranks four different picks on the same logic and shares no products with this page.
Who each pick is for, and who should skip it
| Pick | Buy it for | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|
| Orbit Pro Series 8-pattern nozzle | Anyone with a hose. Named patterns, one-handed thumb control. | They water with a sprinkler on a timer and never hold the hose. |
| Milorganite (6-4-0) | A lawn-keeper. Slow-release, low-burn, 0.77 lb N per 1,000 sq ft. | They are in a phosphorus-restricted state -- Milorganite carries 4% phosphate. |
| Scotts Sun & Shade Mix seed | Someone with thin or patchy grass and mixed sun. | They applied a pre-emergent this season. Seed and pre-emergent cancel out. |
| Orbit H2O-Six gear drive head | A small round area, or a spot a rectangular pattern misses. | Their lawn is a long rectangle. The oscillator fits that better. |
| Orbit Pro Series metal oscillator | A rectangular lawn up to the published 4,000 sq ft. | Their lawn is an odd shape, where a circle-and-overlap approach wastes less. |
Pattern sets, analyses, coverage figures and seed species transcribed from each maker's own published page, all five cited below. The nitrogen rate is our arithmetic from Milorganite's published bag weight, coverage and analysis.
Three of five are watering gear, and that is deliberate
It looks like padding and it is not. The thing that decides whether a cheap yard gift gets used is how often the job comes round, and watering comes round weekly for six months where most specialist tools come round twice a year.
The nozzle is ranked against its alternative in best hose nozzles, which also makes the point that a nozzle is only as good as the hose behind it. The two sprinklers are ranked in best lawn sprinklers, and the odd-shaped-lawn case — where neither pattern fits well — is in sprinklers for odd-shaped lawns.

The cheap fertilizer whose rate you can check
Milorganite publishes a 6-4-0 analysis, 2.5% iron, a 32 lb bag covering 2,500 sq ft and a slow-release, low-burn formulation. Those figures are what make it giftable: 32 / 2.5 = 12.8 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft, and 12.8 x 0.06 = 0.77 lb of nitrogen — under the 1 lb per application ceiling UMN Extension publishes.
Who it is for: a lawn-keeper, and particularly a nervous one. A 6% analysis makes a spreader misfire roughly five times less costly than a 32% one, which is a real argument for giving it to someone who is still learning.
Who should skip it: anyone in a state that restricts phosphorus on established lawns, because Milorganite carries 4% phosphate. The comparison that covers this properly is Milorganite vs Scotts Turf Builder.

The seed, with one timing warning
Scotts publishes five named species — Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, creeping red fescue, chewings fescue and hard fescue — a 4-0-0 analysis, fungicide-treated seed, first sprouts in about 6 to 12 days, a 60 to 80 F seeding window, and 320 sq ft of new lawn or 960 sq ft of overseeding per 2.4 lb bag.
Who it is for: someone with thin grass and a mix of sun and shade, which is most suburban lawns. Five named species is more disclosure than most seed bags offer.
Who should skip it: anyone who has applied a crabgrass pre-emergent this season — a pre-emergent stops seed establishing and cannot tell their seed from crabgrass seed. The conflict is set out in best crabgrass preventers, and the method is in how to overseed.

The two sprinklers, and which shape each fits
Orbit publishes a gear-drive mechanism and a six-pattern selector on the H2O-Six head, and a 4,000 sq ft coverage figure with a metal gear drive on the Pro Series oscillator. They are both here because lawn shape, not quality, decides between them: a circle-throwing head suits small or awkward areas and an oscillator suits rectangles.
Who should skip both: anyone whose lawn is a genuinely odd shape, where circle-area geometry wastes less water than either — that reasoning is in best sprinklers for odd-shaped lawns. And anyone on in-ground irrigation, who needs neither.

What we cannot tell you
We have not used any of these five. Orbit publishes a pattern count and a coverage area but no flow rate at a stated pressure for the nozzle or either sprinkler, so we cannot tell you how much water any of them actually moves — which is the figure that would let you compare them properly. Milorganite publishes no slow-release percentage. Scotts publishes no percentage split between its five seed species, so how much of the bag is fescue is unknown. None of the five publishes a warranty term we can compare. And the price line in this page's title is the one thing we actively cannot promise: we selected on the live figure at build time, prices move daily, and the button rather than the headline is the number to trust.

Orbit Pro Series 8-Pattern Thumb Control Hose Nozzle (26812)
Orbit · Hose nozzle (no power) · Our score 8.3/10

Eight named patterns and a zinc core, with a thumb lever that lets you change spray without letting go of the hose.
Published specs
| Patterns | 8: High, Medium and Low Pressure, Needle Spray, Rinse, Dual Sweeper, Bucket Fill |
|---|---|
| Core | Heavy-duty zinc |
| Body | Non-corrosive metal |
| Grip | Rubberized non-slip |
| Flow claim | Up to 20% more flow (Orbit's figure, no baseline named) |
| Control | Thumb lever |
| Thread size | Not published |
| Max water temperature | Not published |
| Warranty | Not published |
Source: Pro Series Thumb Control Cannon Nozzle, orbitonline.com
Count the jobs: rinsing a car and watering a bed want a soft pattern, washing a driveway wants the hardest jet, and filling a watering can wants a solid column. That is three. The other five -- and the Dual Sweeper in particular -- are variations on the first three at different pressures. More patterns is not a defect; it is just not the reason to pick a nozzle. Build material is.
What the numbers favor
- Eight patterns, and Orbit names all eight rather than saying '8-pattern'
- Zinc core rather than a plastic insert
- Thumb lever changes pattern one-handed
- Bucket Fill is a genuine pattern, not a marketing name for the jet
- Rubberized grip stays usable with wet hands
What they don't
- The 'up to 20% more flow' claim names no baseline, so it cannot be checked
- No thread size published, which matters if you run quick-connects
- No maximum water temperature published -- do not assume hot-water duty
- No warranty term published
you want a nozzle you can leave running hands-free. This is a squeeze-and-hold design with no lock published.

Milorganite Slow-Release Nitrogen Fertilizer (6-4-0)
Milorganite · Fertilizer (no power) · Our score 8.4/10

#ad Price as of October 11, 2026. Prices change; we check daily. How we're funded.
A 6-4-0 analysis with 2.5% iron that puts 0.77 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft down at the bag rate -- under the Extension ceiling by arithmetic, not by luck.
Published specs
| Guaranteed analysis | 6-4-0 (6.0% N, 4.0% P, 0.0% K) |
|---|---|
| Iron | 2.5% |
| Bag sizes | 32 lb and 5 lb |
| Coverage | 32 lb covers 2,500 sq ft |
| Feeding duration | 8-10 weeks |
| Bag dimensions | 22 x 13.25 x 4.75 in |
| Slow-release share | Not published on the specification page |
| Application rate per 1,000 sq ft | Not published directly |
Source: Product Specifications, milorganite.com
32 lb over 2,500 sq ft is 32 / 2.5 = 12.8 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft. At a 6% nitrogen analysis that is 12.8 x 0.06 = 0.77 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. University of Minnesota Extension publishes a ceiling of 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft in any single application, so the bag rate lands under it with room to spare -- which is the whole argument for a low-analysis slow-release product.
What the numbers favor
- 0.77 lb N per 1,000 sq ft at the bag rate, inside the Extension ceiling without measuring anything
- 2.5% iron, which is what produces color without pushing growth
- Feeds 8-10 weeks on a published figure
- Low analysis means a spreader misfire is far less costly than with a 32-0-4
What they don't
- 12.8 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft is four times the bulk of a high-analysis fertilizer -- more bags, more carrying
- Contains 4% phosphate, which several states restrict on established lawns unless a soil test calls for it
- The specification page publishes no slow-release percentage and no rate per 1,000 sq ft
your soil test shows adequate phosphorus or your state restricts phosphorus on established lawns. Read the label against your local rule before buying.

Five named species and a 4-0-0 analysis on the bag, at the price of needing half again as much seed per square foot.
Published specs
| Species | Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, creeping red fescue, chewings fescue, hard fescue |
|---|---|
| New lawn coverage | 320 sq ft per 2.4 lb bag |
| Overseeding coverage | 960 sq ft per 2.4 lb bag |
| Bag sizes | 2.4, 5.6, 16, 32 lb |
| Germination | First sprouts in about 6-12 days |
| Seed treatment | Fungicide-treated seed |
| Seeding temperature | 60F to 80F air temperature |
| Analysis | 4-0-0 |
Source: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix (2.4 lb), scottsmiraclegro.com
2.4 lb over 320 sq ft is 2.4 / 0.32 = 7.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft for a new lawn. The same bag over 960 sq ft of overseeding is 2.4 / 0.96 = 2.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft. Scotts publishes the same two rates on every bag size it sells, so the figures do not change with the bag. The two mixes agree exactly on overseeding rate and differ by 50% on new lawns -- Scotts asks for 7.5 lb where Jonathan Green asks for 5.
What the numbers favor
- Five species named on the bag, more disclosure than most
- Publishes an NPK analysis, which a plain seed bag usually does not
- Fungicide-treated seed against damping-off in a wet spring
- Seeding temperature window published in plain degrees
What they don't
- 7.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft on a new lawn is 50% more seed than the alternative here
- No published percentage split between the five species
- Fine fescues in the blend are the least wear-tolerant grasses in a cool-season lawn
you are seeding a high-traffic play lawn. The fescue-heavy blend is chosen for shade tolerance, not for foot traffic.

Orbit H2O-Six Gear Drive Sprinkler Head

Six patterns and a partial-to-full-circle collar, which is how you water a lawn that is not a rectangle.
Published specs
| Type | Gear-drive rotor head |
|---|---|
| Spray diameter | Up to 80 ft |
| Coverage | 5,026 sq ft at full circle |
| Patterns | 6 (small, medium, large, shower, vertical, flat) |
| Diffuser | 4-position |
| Arc | Collar tabs, partial to 360 degrees |
| Base | Sold separately (spike, tripod or wheeled) |
| Pressure requirement | Not published |
Source: H2O-Six Gear Drive Sprinkler Head - No Base, orbitonline.com
An 80 ft diameter circle has a 40 ft radius, and pi x 40^2 = 5,027 sq ft. Orbit's published coverage is that area to within a square foot, so the claim is the geometric consequence of the throw distance rather than an independent measurement of how evenly the water lands. Useful for sizing; useless for judging distribution uniformity.
What the numbers favor
- Six patterns cover strips, beds and full lawns from one head
- Adjustable arc means less water on the sidewalk
- Gear drive is quiet next to an impact head
- Head-only pricing if you already own a spike or tripod base
What they don't
- Base sold separately -- the head alone will not stand up
- No published pressure requirement or flow rate
- Plastic construction where the impact heads use brass
your supply pressure is low. Rotors need pressure to reach their rated diameter, and Orbit does not publish the figure this one needs.

Orbit Pro Series 4,000 sq ft Metal Gear-Drive Oscillating Sprinkler (56281)
Orbit · Hose-end sprinkler · Our score 8.2/10

#ad Price as of October 11, 2026. Prices change; we check daily. How we're funded.
A rectangular 4,000 sq ft pattern on a metal base, which is the shape most front lawns actually are.
Published specs
| Type | Oscillating, gear drive |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Up to 4,000 sq ft, rectangular |
| Base | Heavy-duty metal |
| Width adjustment | Sliding tabs, full to partial |
| Nozzles | Precision nozzles, count not published |
| Maintenance | Clean-out plug |
| Connection | Swivel hose connection |
| Warranty | Not published on the product page |
Source: Pro Series 4000 Sq Ft Metal Gear-Drive Oscillating Sprinkler 56281, orbitonline.com
One inch of water over 4,000 sq ft is 4,000 x (1/12) = 333 cu ft. A cubic foot is 7.48 US gallons, so 333 x 7.48 = about 2,490 gallons. That is the number behind the standard one-inch-a-week guidance, and it is why placement matters more than pattern shape: water that lands on the driveway is charged to you at the same rate.
What the numbers favor
- Rectangular pattern matches rectangular lawns with less overspray than a circle
- Metal base resists tipping when the hose tugs
- Clean-out plug for the nozzle clogs that end most oscillators' lives
- Sliding tabs narrow the pattern for a strip of parkway
What they don't
- Nozzle count is not published, so you cannot compare distribution against rivals
- No published flow rate, so run time for one inch has to be measured with a rain gauge
- No warranty term on the product page
your lawn is an irregular shape or you have beds inside it. A gear-drive rotor with an adjustable arc wastes less water on odd geometry.
