The lawn care aisle sells about forty products. A lawn needs five, and each one earns its place with a number you can check. This is the shortlist we would buy, drawn entirely from products we hold published specifications for.
The short answer
1. Fertilizer you can compute
The only fertilizer worth buying is one whose bag lets you work out pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. Jonathan Green Veri-Green publishes 29-0-3, 40% slow release, 4% iron, and a 15 lb bag covering 5,000 sq ft — which is 3 lb of product and 0.87 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft, just under the 1 lb per application ceiling UMN Extension publishes.

2. Seed matched to the climate, not the shelf
Black Beauty Ultra is a tall-fescue base with Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, germinating in a published 7 to 14 days and needing 6+ hours of sun. Its coverage table works out to 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft for a new lawn and 2.5 lb for overseeding — a third less seed per square foot than the mass-market alternative.
It is a cool-season mix. In bermudagrass country it is the wrong purchase entirely; our grass types guide sorts that out first.

3. A spreader that publishes a width
Granular product applied by hand stripes. The Scotts Elite publishes a 6 ft dual-rotor spread width, an 80 lb hopper covering up to 20,000 sq ft, EdgeGuard to keep product off hard surfaces, and foam-filled tires.

4. A way to relieve compaction
Fertilizer and seed both fail on compacted soil, and no product fixes compaction — only removing cores does. The Yard Butler ID-6C pulls two 3 inch plugs per step from a 37 inch steel tool, guaranteed for life.
For anything above about 2,000 sq ft the arithmetic turns against doing it by hand; the alternatives are in best aerators.

5. Watering gear rated for the pressure
The ELEY wall reel publishes 150 psi and 165F, a lead-free brass swivel at full 3/4 in flow, and a 10-year no-leak warranty. It holds 75 to 125 ft of 5/8 in hose, or 200 ft with the upgrade kit.
UMN Extension's guidance is to water infrequently — once a week or less — deeply enough to wet the soil six inches down, in the morning. Gear that holds pressure is what makes that practical; the schedule is in our lawn watering guide.

What is not on this list, and why
- A soil test. Not a product, and it comes before every item above. It decides whether you need phosphorus at all — see soil testing guide.
- Herbicides. We do not name them or publish application rates. They are regulated, regionally specific, and your extension service is the right source.
- Weed-and-feed. It applies a herbicide across the whole lawn to treat weeds in part of it, and it ties the timing of two different jobs together.
- Anything that duplicates mowing height. Mowing tall and returning clippings is free, and it does more for a lawn than most of the aisle — see clippings and composting.
The order to buy in
- Soil test. Everything else is a guess without it.
- Spreader, because fertilizer and seed both need one.
- Seed or fertilizer, depending on whether the lawn is thin or hungry.
- Aeration, once you know the soil is the problem.
- Watering gear, sized to the far corner of the lawn.

We have not run a season with this exact set. Every figure above is a manufacturer specification or our arithmetic on one, and none of these makers publishes a response curve — how much greener, how much thicker, how much faster. Soil, climate and grass species decide that, and a shortlist cannot.

15 lb over 5,000 sq ft is 15 / 5 = 3 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft. At 29% nitrogen that is 3 x 0.29 = 0.87 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft -- just under the 1 lb per application ceiling UMN Extension publishes, and 13% more nitrogen per pass than Milorganite's 0.77 lb. Both bags are inside the rule; this one gets there carrying a quarter of the product weight.
What the numbers favor
- 0.87 lb N per 1,000 sq ft at the bag rate -- close to the Extension ceiling without exceeding it
- 40% slow release published as a percentage, which almost no consumer bag states
- 4% iron for color
- Zero phosphate, so it sidesteps state phosphorus restrictions on established lawns
- 3 lb per 1,000 sq ft means a 15 lb bag covers a typical front lawn
What they don't
- A 29% analysis is unforgiving of a miscalibrated spreader; overlap stripes will show
- The product page does not state the rate per 1,000 sq ft directly -- it has to be derived from the coverage table
- Only two bag sizes
you have never calibrated your spreader. At this analysis, a double pass is a burn, not a blemish.

The 25 lb bag is rated for 5,000 sq ft of new lawn and 10,000 sq ft of overseeding. 25 / 5 = 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft new, and 25 / 10 = 2.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft over an existing lawn. Every bag size in the range works out to the same two rates, which is a sign the coverage table was calculated rather than guessed.
What the numbers favor
- Species list published, even without percentages
- 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft for a new lawn is a third less seed than the Scotts mix asks for
- Germination window published as 7-14 days
- Range runs from a 1 lb patch bag to a 50 lb reseed

5,000 sq ft at a 6 ft spread width needs about 833 linear feet of walking. On a 60 ft run that is roughly 14 passes -- versus 17 passes at a standard 5 ft width. That is the whole practical difference the dual rotor buys.
What the numbers favor

- 80 lb hopper covers 20,000 sq ft without a refill
- EdgeGuard keeps fertilizer off hard surfaces, which is where runoff starts
- Foam-filled tires cannot go flat in the shed over winter
What they don't
- 80 lb loaded is heavy to push on soft or sloped ground
- Broadcast spreaders are harder to control near beds than a drop spreader
your lawn is under about 2,000 sq ft or heavily bordered by beds. A drop spreader puts product exactly where you steer it and nowhere else.

Take a 6 in by 6 in grid as an illustration -- that is our figure, not the maker's. 1,000 sq ft is 144,000 sq in, and a 6 x 6 in cell is 36 sq in, so the grid has 4,000 holes. At two plugs per step that is 2,000 steps for a thousand square feet, or 10,000 steps for a 5,000 sq ft lawn. Against a tow-behind with 32 knives, the arithmetic is the whole argument.

What they don't

The reel is rated to 150 psi and 165F. ELEY's own 5/8 in polyurethane hose is rated to 150 psi and 165F. The two figures are identical, so the reel is not the weak link in the run -- which is not something you can establish for any reel that publishes no pressure rating at all, and most do not.
What the numbers favor
- Publishes a pressure and temperature rating, which is rare for a hose reel
- Aluminum alloy rather than resin -- it will not go brittle in UV
- Brass swivel with full 3/4 in flow, so the reel does not throttle the hose
- 10-year warranty, and a documented capacity upgrade kit
- Mounting hardware for both wood and masonry in the box
What they don't
- No pivot: ELEY states it does not rotate or swing, so hose angle is fixed by where you mount it
