Best mower for a new lawn

A new lawn is the one mowing job where the mower can undo the work. Seedlings sit in soft, recently watered soil on roots that have had weeks rather than years to establish, and the first few cuts decide whether the stand thickens or thins out.

The short answer

The one-third rule sets the timing, not the calendar

Clemson Cooperative Extension's published guidance is to remove no more than one-third of the grass height at any one mowing. On an established lawn that is a maintenance habit. On a new one it is the thing that tells you when to start.

Weight matters more than usual here

Soft ground plus shallow roots is the combination that turns a heavy mower into wheel ruts and pulled seedlings. This is the one page where we would take a lighter deck over a wider one.

2. Greenworks LM2054 — the lightest published deck

Fifty-seven and a half pounds is the lightest published weight in our mower registry and 17.5 lb under its own 80V sibling. It is a push mower, so there is no drive wheel spinning on soft ground, and the 1.2 inch floor means it still serves the lawn once it is established.

Against it: 3.6 inches at the top. That is enough for a 2.5 inch target but not for a 3 inch one, and it is the reason this is second rather than first. The 160Wh in the kit is also the smallest here.

3. Greenworks LM2108S — reaches 4 inches, weighs the most

A 4.0 inch ceiling and the most complete spec sheet in our registry, including the 75 lb weight that puts it third on this particular page. If your new lawn is on firm ground and you want a published acreage rating and a four-year battery warranty, the trade is defensible.

Against it: it is the heaviest published mower we hold, and on soft, newly seeded ground that is the wrong direction.

Why a new lawn is a different surface

Three things are true of newly established grass and of nothing else, and together they are why the mower choice changes.

1. The roots are weeks old. A mature lawn anchors each plant well enough that a dull blade tears the leaf. On a new lawn the same blade can pull the whole seedling out of the ground.
2. The soil is soft and recently watered. Establishment watering is frequent by necessity — see watering a new lawn — so the ground is rarely firm when you first want to mow it.
3. The stand is uneven. Seed does not germinate all at once, and a shade mix can be a week behind a sun mix in the same lawn, so the first cut always catches some plants younger than others.

Each of those points at the same two specifications: cut as high as the deck allows, and weigh as little as possible while doing it.

Timing, against the published germination windows

Push or self-propelled on soft ground

This is the one situation where a push mower has a genuine advantage over a self-propelled one, and it is worth stating because the rest of this site generally argues the opposite.

• A driven wheel applies torque to soft soil. That is how a track starts. An undriven wheel rolls.
• The Greenworks LM2054 is a push mower at a published 57.5 lb, which is the lightest combination available in our registry.
• If you are using a self-propelled deck, use the slowest drive setting the machine offers. The EGO publishes 0.9 MPH at the bottom of its range, which is a genuinely useful figure here.
• Vary your direction every mow, so no line of soft ground is compressed twice in the same week — see mowing patterns.

The first three cuts

1. Sharpen first. Clemson: a dull blade browns the leaf at the point of impact. On seedlings it can pull the plant out — see when to sharpen and replace blades.
2. Let the ground dry before you walk on it. New grass is watered often; mow when the surface is firm, not when the schedule says.
3. Set the deck at the top and take a third. Come down one click per mow until you reach your target height.
4. Leave the clippings. They return nitrogen to a lawn that has none banked — see clippings and composting.
5. Change direction each time so the wheels do not track the same soft line twice.

The rest of the first year

The mower is one of four decisions on a new lawn and the last of them. The others are already covered on this site and they matter more:

• Seed chosen for the light the area actually gets — sun and shade publish different sunlight-hour requirements and different germination windows.
• A starter fertilizer rather than a lawn food, because seedlings need phosphate for roots and very little nitrogen — see fertilizer for new grass.

Get those four right and almost any mower here will do. Get them wrong and no deck height rescues the lawn.

What we cannot tell you

We have not mowed a newly seeded lawn with any of these machines. No maker publishes a ground-pressure figure, a tire width or a minimum soil firmness, so the weight comparison above is a proxy rather than a measurement.
