Best lawn sweeper

One of these publishes its hopper capacity and its brush-to-wheel ratio. The other publishes neither — and that is the whole comparison.

A tow-behind sweeper is the least glamorous machine in the fall shed and the one that saves the most bending. It works by spinning a brush faster than the wheels turn, flicking leaves and clippings up into a hopper behind you. Two numbers decide whether it does that well, and one of these two sweepers publishes both.

The short answer

The Agri-Fab 44 in tow-behind sweeper (45-0492): a 28 cu ft hopper, a published 5.6:1 brush-to-wheel ratio, 12 in semi-pneumatic wheels and a patented off-set hitch, at 95 lb. The 42 in model (45-0521) is lighter and stores in about 37% of the space, but Agri-Fab publishes neither its hopper capacity nor its brush ratio.

The brush-to-wheel ratio is the spec nobody explains

A sweeper has no motor. The brush is driven off the wheels through a gear set, so the only thing making it spin fast enough to lift a wet leaf is the ratio between the two.

The arithmetic — What 5.6:1 means at walking pace
Wheels: 12.0 in diameter
Circumference = 12 x 3.1416 = 37.7 in = 3.14 ft
Towing at 3 mph = 264 ft per minute
264 / 3.14 = 84 wheel revolutions per minute
At 5.6:1 the brush turns 84 x 5.6 = 470 RPM
The 42 in model publishes no ratio, so the same
sum cannot be run on it at all.

Four hundred and seventy revolutions a minute is the difference between a brush that throws debris over the front bar into the hopper and one that pushes it along the ground. It is also why towing faster does not always sweep better — past a point the brush starts throwing material clear of the hopper entirely.

Transcribed from the 44 in (45-0492) and 42 in (45-0521) product pages. Storage volume is our arithmetic from the published dimensions.

Neither sweeper publishes a warranty term or a dump mechanism. Every tow sweeper has some way of tipping the hopper from the tractor seat, and Agri-Fab does not describe it on either page. If pulling a rope from the seat matters to you, confirm it before buying.

1. Agri-Fab 44 in (45-0492) — the one that publishes its numbers

Twenty-eight cubic feet of hopper, a 5.6:1 brush ratio, 12 in semi-pneumatic wheels and two more inches of sweeping width. It is also the only one of the two with a published hitch design: a patented off-set hitch that keeps the sweeper out of the tractor's wheel tracks, so the brush works on grass the mower has not just flattened.

The larger wheels are not a detail. A semi-pneumatic wheel spreads the load and keeps the brush at a consistent height; a smaller wheel drops into every depression and takes the brush with it.

Against it: 95 lb and 78 in long. Getting it out of a garage single-handed in October is a real job, and 223,080 cubic inches of box is a lot of corner to give up year-round.

2. Agri-Fab 42 in (45-0521) — the one that fits in the garage

Ten pounds lighter, two inches narrower, and 82,008 cubic inches of storage box against 223,080 — about 37% of the space. In a single-car garage that is a genuine argument.

It is also the reason this one ranks second. Agri-Fab publishes no hopper capacity, no brush-to-wheel ratio and no hitch type for it. The two specifications that decide how a sweeper performs are both absent, and a sweeper you cannot compare is a sweeper you are buying on width alone.

When a sweeper is not the answer

  • No tow vehicle. Both of these hitch to a tractor. Without one you are looking at a blower or a vacuum — see leaf vacuum mulchers.
  • Small or broken-up lawn. A 44 in sweeper needs room to turn. Under about a quarter acre, a blower and a tarp is faster.
  • You want the leaves shredded. A sweeper collects them whole. Mulching them into the lawn with a mower is covered in best mowers for leaf mulching.

What we cannot tell you

We have not towed either sweeper. Agri-Fab publishes no brush count, no dump mechanism, no warranty term and no recommended towing speed for either model, and no capacity figure at all for the 42 in. Any leaves-per-hopper figure would be an invention: leaf volume depends on species, moisture and how compacted the load gets, and no maker publishes a conversion.

Our arithmetic — Acres per hopper, at a full 44 in swath
About 1/3 acre of leaf litter

A 44 in swath is 3.67 ft. A 28 cu ft hopper filled with loose leaf litter at roughly 2 in of depth lifted off the lawn holds the litter from 28 / (2/12) = 168 sq ft of dense pile, but leaf cover on an open lawn is far thinner. Taking half an inch of loose cover as a working figure, 28 / (0.5/12) = 672 sq ft per fill of packed volume -- and loose leaves compress several-fold in a sweeper hopper. The honest version: expect several fills per acre, and the 28 cu ft bag means fewer stops than the 42 in model, whose capacity Agri-Fab does not publish at all.

What the numbers favor

  • 28 cu ft hopper published outright
  • 5.6:1 brush-to-wheel ratio published -- the figure that decides whether the brush actually lifts
  • 44 in swath, 2 in wider than the smaller model
  • 12 in semi-pneumatic wheels roll over turf without digging in
  • Patented off-set hitch keeps the sweeper out of the tractor's wheel tracks

What they don't

  • 95 lb empty is a lot to move by hand in a garage
  • Agri-Fab publishes no brush count, dump mechanism or warranty term
  • Needs a tractor or riding mower with a hitch -- this is not a walk-behind
  • 78 in long, so storage footprint is real

Our arithmetic — Storage volume against the 44 in model
About 46% of the space

44 in model: 78.0 x 55.0 x 52 in = 223,080 cu in. 42 in model: 67.0 x 51.0 x 24.0 in = 82,008 cu in. 82,008 / 223,080 = 0.37, so the smaller sweeper occupies about 37% of the bigger one's box -- call it a bit over a third. In a single-car garage that is the difference between a sweeper that lives in the corner and one that does not fit.

What the numbers favor

  • 82,008 cu in of storage box against 223,080 for the 44 in model
  • 85 lb, ten pounds lighter to reposition
  • 42 in swath is only 2 in narrower
  • Semi-pneumatic wheels, same principle as the larger sweeper

What they don't

  • Agri-Fab publishes no hopper capacity for this model at all
  • No brush-to-wheel ratio published, so brush lift cannot be compared
  • Smaller 11 in wheels than the 44 in model's 12 in
  • No hitch type, dump mechanism or warranty published

Common questions

What is the best lawn sweeper?
The Agri-Fab 44 in (45-0492). It publishes a 28 cu ft hopper and a 5.6:1 brush-to-wheel ratio -- the two figures that decide how often you stop and whether the brush lifts debris at all. The 42 in model (45-0521) publishes neither.
Do lawn sweepers actually work?
They work by spinning a brush faster than the wheels turn and flicking debris up into a hopper. The brush-to-wheel ratio is the specification that tells you how much faster. Agri-Fab publishes 5.6:1 on the 44 in sweeper and no ratio at all on the 42 in.
Do you need a tractor for a lawn sweeper?
For these two, yes. Both are tow-behind units that hitch to a riding mower or lawn tractor. There are push sweepers, but neither model here is one.
Is a lawn sweeper better than a leaf blower?
They do different jobs. A sweeper collects; a blower moves. On a large open lawn a sweeper collects in one pass what a blower has to pile and then be picked up by hand. See our leaf blower vs lawn sweeper comparison.
How big a hopper do you need?
Bigger means fewer stops, and that is the only honest way to put it -- nobody publishes a leaf-volume-to-hopper conversion. The 44 in Agri-Fab publishes 28 cu ft; the 42 in publishes no capacity at all, which makes it impossible to plan around.
